Back in November 2013 I encountered this man while visiting the Big Shisa on the Yomitan Peninsula. I had asked him if he'd use my camera to take my picture standing next to the 20+ foot tall monster. After that he sold me a couple of stalks of freshly cut sugar cane. This evening, Feb 24th, 2014, I saw him again but this time I was at Zanpa Beach! He had his familiar little plastic box with sugar cane and got another 100 yen from me. I shook hands, as you'll see, and regretted having given him such a firm grip.

Sobe, Yomitan-son Park - a mystery to me. Oct 25, 2015
I stopped at a Family Mart on Rte 6 in Yomitan Village today and asked a guy if he knows where the Aka Inu-ko (Red Puppy) monument is. It is said to be in the area across from Torii Station. Aka Inu-ko is an interesting story that I'll tell if I ever find the monument.
There used to be a restaurant on 6 called the Aka Inu-ko. Interesting tale.
Anyway, the guy said he'd never heard of it but did suggest another one that I might be interested in. I was told by this Marine who had his three young children with him that there were markers at the site with English-language information. So, he gave me directions and off I went.
When I got there there was not an English-language word to be found anywhere. I asked a young teen-age boy about the park and he said he doesn't know the name of the park. He ran to a couple of the inscribed monuments then rushed back and started tapping on his smart-phone. The result of that exercise was the appearance of the only English-language word that I had seen anywhere in the park. On his screen was the single word, Sewer.
Okay, so maybe this is a park developed and maintained by the water department.
Anyone who can help me with identifying the purpose/theme of the park or, better yet, translation of some of my photos will be greatly appreciated and will edify this Okinawaphile!

That park is the song monument of 艦砲ぬ喰ぇー残さー''Kanpou-nu kweenukusa''. ''Kanpou-nu kweenukusa'' mean ship cannon's leftovers in okinawan language. This song expresses emotion and later life of war survivors.
