????Exploring Abandoned Historic Ruins In Barbados pt1 -Abandoned Ontario
This is part 1 of a 2 part walk through of the Old General Hospital in Saint Michael Barbados. Barbados old General Hospital The next major advance came after emancipation, with the recognition in 1839 that a general hospital must be built near Bridgetown, to serve the newly freed majority of the population. The house and lands of Mr. Jemmott on Bay Street were purchased. The Barbados General Hospital was built by public subscription with a modest contribution from government, and it opened on July 1, 1844. The parish vestries provided parish doctors and infirmaries for the indigent infirm. The General Hospital was replaced by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) IN 1963. Officially opened in 1964.
The Old Eye Hospital/Ward Building
In 1817 this building was bought by the British Government to house the offices of the Deputy Adjutant-General and Deputy Quartermaster-General. It was later used for other military purposes. After the departure of the British troops in 1905, the property was bought by the Barbados Government and became part of the nearby General Hospital.
It first housed the Pellagra Ward and later the old Eye Hospital. After the old Eye Ward was relocated, the building became the home of the Barbados Welfare Department.
This too was eventually relocated, and the building has since been abandoned and in a state of disrepair.
However, restoration plans are in the works for the area, which involves the construction of two office buildings and the reconstruction of the jetty with a fine dining restaurant at its seaward end.
The Old Eye Hospital Building is of Georgian architecture and is located on the lively Bay Street.
