Over 260 splendid islands on calm Matsushima Bay. Zuigan-ji Temple represents ancient 17th century Japanese architecture.
Matsushima was protected by hundreds of small islands, there was not big damage of tsunami compared to the other coastal area. Major tourist attractions including Zuiganji temple and Godaido temple are open. It is recommended to check latest information in advance.
Matsushima is located in the central part of Miyagi Prefecture. Some 260 islands, large and small, are scattered in picturesque Matsushima Bay. The view of Matsushima changes from place-to-place and from-season-to-season, and is so beautiful that it is considered one of the three most beautiful sites in Japan.
Dotted with small islands covered by black and red pines and grayish white rocks, the views of Matsushima Bay from the four view spots of Ogi-tani, Tomi-yama, Otaka-mori, and Tamon-zan are truly spectacular, which is called Matsushima Shidaikan, the four grandest views in Matsushima. With its stunning island scenery, the place is frequented by visitors all year round.
Zuigan-ji Temple, a Zen temple erected in 828, stands facing Matsushima Bay. It took five years to construct the present buildings for Date Masamune, who reigned over this district in 1604. Among them, the main hall and other premises are designated as national treasures. They are highly valued as representatives of the classic Japanese architectural style of that period.

Yamadera (山寺) Temple, Yamagata Prefecture in Tohoku Region, Japan
Yamadera (山寺) Temple, also known as Risshakuji (立石寺) Temple is located in Yamagata Prefecture in the Tohoku Region, northeastern Japan. It is located on a holy mountain between Sendai and Yamagata cities. It is reached by taking the JR Sanzen line that runs between Sendai and Yamagata cities and getting off at JR Yamadera station (see my video of the JR Yamadera station、 JR 山寺駅).
This temple was opened by the Buddhist priest Jikaku Daishi in the second year of Jogan period (AD 860) in response to the imperial edict of the Emperor Seiwa. The mountain where this temple located is considered second holy mountain (but of equal importance) for the Tendai sect of Buddhism after the Mt. Hiei in the Kyoto Prefecture (see my video of Enryakuji Temple).
In addition to the spiritual significance to this temple, it is located in a picturesque mountain range in the Yamagata prefecture and is a delight to the travelers. The trek from the entrance at the foot of the mountain to the temple main hall at the top takes about an hour and the entire trek contains beautiful old statues of gods/goddesses, old tombstones, old gates and great scenery.
This temple is not as popular with the foreign tourists as it is with the Japanese, I suggest all the foreign tourists visiting Tokyo to make a day trip to this temple. It is easy to get to this temple by taking the Shinkansen to Sendai City and switching to the Sanzen line (getting off at JR Yamadera Station). On the way back you can go to JR Yamagata station and then take a Shinkansen from Yamagata back to Tokyo (thus covering Yamadera temple and a bit of Sendai and Yamagata cities).
Hope you enjoy this video.

Along with Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples in Japan are considered among the most numerous, famous and important religious buildings. The Japanese word for a Buddhist temple is tera , and the same kanji also has the pronunciation ji, so temple names often end with -ji or -dera. There is also another ending, -in (normally used for minor temples). Famous temples as Enryaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera, and Kotoku-in illustrate the naming patterns.
The JapaneseFlute is a Japanese end-blown flute. It was originally introduced from China into Japan in the 8th century and underwent a resurgence in the early Edo Period. The JapaneseFlute is traditionally made of bamboo, but versions now exist in ABS and hardwoods. It was used by the monks of the Fuke school of Zen Buddhism in the practice of suizen (blowing meditation). The instrument is tuned to the minor pentatonic scale.
The koto (Japanese: 箏) is a traditional Japanese stringed musical instrument, similar to the Chinese zheng, the Mongolian yatga, the Korean gayageum and the Vietnamese ?an tranh. The koto is the national instrument of Japan. made from kiri wood (Paulownia tomentosa). They have 13 strings that are strung over 13 movable bridges along the width of the instrument. Players can adjust the string pitches by moving the white bridges in the picture before playing, and use three finger picks (on thumb, index finger, and middle finger) to pluck the strings, otherwise known as plectra.

Amazing Zen Garden Autumn Colors On The Hike Up To Yamadera Temple
Yamadera Temple 山寺 in the Yamagata prefecture was one of the incredible spots that I visited on my tour of the Tohoku region in the fall. Yamadera is a scenic temple located in the mountains northeast of Yamagata City, with temple grounds extending along the hike up the hill. These are the amazing fall foliage colors - bright red, yellow and orange, in the zen Japanese gardens that surround the temple, all along the long and steep walk up the hill to the temple.

【English】All About Hiraizumi #17 --Temples and shrines around Hiraizumi Town
Hiraizumi is gaining much attention from all around the world after being registered as a World Heritage Site, but there are also many interesting and attractive places nearby.
Here we will introduce you to a few recommended places.
Haishiwa Shrine stands on the hillside of Mt. Ranbaisan in Ichinoseki city, south of Hiraizumi. Beyond the flight of 400 stone steps, the main shrine building, built in mid Edo era, and two sacred 'Meoto (husband and wife)' cedars stand in an opening. The shrine is said to have been founded in 110, by Prince Yamato Takeru when he prayed for victory in this region.
There is also a record of Sugae Masumi, a travelogue writer of late Edo era, visiting.
Northeast from Hiraizumi, in amongst the mountains of Oshu city there is Kokuseki-ji. It is said to have been founded by the high priest Gyogi Bodhisattva in 729 (Nara era), then over a century later, revived by Jikaku-daishi Ennin, in 849.
Statues of the Four Heavenly Kings, designated as an Important Cultural Property, are enshrined in the altar of the main hall. The Bodhisattvas of moonlight and sunlight, Gakko Bosatsu and Nikko Bosatsu stand side by side in the centre of the altar. These are supposed to have been donated by the second Fujiwara lord Motohira.
2km along the one road from Kokuseki-ji, stands the Zen temple Shobo-ji, founded by Mutei Ryoshi, a Zen priest. The Main Mall, with the largest thatched roof in Japan, was burnt down by a fire in late Edo period, but it was rebuilt in 1811 with the support of the Date family, lord of the Sendai clan. The kuri (Priest's residence) was rebuilt in 1807 and along with the Main Hall and Main Gate, it is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
If there is a chance, please also visit these beautiful spots when visiting Hiraizumi.
