Zenko-ji Temple - Nagano - 善光寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Founded in the 7th century, Zenkō-ji (Zenko-ji) Temple is actually one of the most important and popular temples in Japan, and stores the first ever Buddhist statue bought in Japan when Buddhism was first introduced during the 6th century.
Zenkō-ji’s fame does not stop here, since the temple itself was founded before Buddhism in Japan split into different sects, and as such, Zenkō-ji currently belongs to both the Tendai and Jōdoshū schools of Buddhism. It is co-managed by twenty-five priests from the former school, and fourteen from the latter.
Finally, and unlike many other cities in Japan, Zenkō-ji is at the center of the birth of Nagano City as the city itself was built around the temple.

Zenko-ji is one of Japan’s most important temples.
Founded in 642 it is said to house the oldest image of Buddha to have ever entered Japan. Besides the famous statue, the impressive main hall, the bell tower, the gardens and many other things are worth a visit as well.

Zenkoji Temple (善光寺） , Nagano Prefecture, Japan
Zenkoji Temple (善光寺） is located in the north of Nagano Prefecture. Zenkoji Temple is one of the largest temples in Japan and main temple for the people of Nagano Prefecture.
Original temple has been built in the late sixty and early seventh century. Most of the current buildings (all of them are national treasures) are rebuilt in the 1700s. The temple belongs to both tendai and Jodo sect of Buddhism.
Zenkoji Temple, even though does not officially belong to any Kannon Temple pilgrimages, it is the temple most pilgrims visit after they have completed a Kannon Temple pilgrimage (such as Saikoku or Bando).
There was a typhoon going through that part of Japan, when I went to the temple, so the video reflects the heavy rain that was falling at that time.

Gokaicho: 7-year festival at Zenko-ji Temple in Nagano, Japan
Every seven years, at the temple of Zenko-ji in Nagano City they reveal a statue that is normally kept hidden. The statue is a 13th Century replica of a Buddhist statue which supposedly was the first Buddhist statue to officially come to Japan in the 6th Century.
This first introduction of Buddhism set off a religious war which was more about political power than anything else between the Soga clan and the Mononobe and Nakotomi clans. The statue got tossed into the river but was later fished out and ended up at Zenko-ji in Nagano. A replica was made during the Kamakura Period (1192-1333) and that one is revealed to the public every 7 years.
The 7 year festival occurred this year and the last time to see it was the end of May so I went there during May to get a glimpse of the statue and a glimpse at Japan's history.

A travel guide for visiting Nagano Japan. Highlights include: Getting to Nagano from Tokyo, Nagano Station, Zenkoji Temple, Cherry Blossoms, and the Snow Monkey Park. Nagano, now connected by a new Shinkansen line, is only a 90 minute trip from Tokyo Station. Although most people only know of Nagano as a former home to the winter Olympics, it is a great day trip from Tokyo, or over-night stay to visit the Nagano Snow Monkey Park.
While you are in Nagano, make sure to their some of their food specialties: Soba Noodles, Apples, and Miso Ice Cream. The third floor of JR Nagano Station has a great selection of local eateries.

Located in the west central region of the island of Honshu, the city of Nagano is for most non-Japanese people known as the site of the 1998 Winter Olympics. For the Japanese, however, Nagano is more famous for its great pilgrimage shrine, the temple of Zenkoji, which is visited by several million pilgrims each year.
According to the Zenkoji Engi, an early history of the Zenkoji Temple, the first Buddha image in Japan was brought there in 522AD, from the Kingdom of Kudara in Korea. Called the Ikko Sanzon, or the Amida Tathagata statue, it is the temple’s most revered object.

It's Raining when we arrived in Nagano. The weather forecast have been lying to us ????! None the less, we gonna enjoy this visit to Zenko-Ji Temple.
I have been wanting to visit this place since 2 years ago but haven't had the chance. There weren't many people around when we reach there. Probably because of the rain but it wasn't bad considering the heat we suffered in TOKYO ????. Whether in Nagano is cool & the mood is chill. I LOVE IT !!

The original statue is hidden while a copy of it is shown to the public every six years for a few weeks. The next opportunity will be in 2021.
The significance of Zenkoji to the development of Nagano was instrumental: many major Japanese cities have evolved either from castle towns, harbor towns or temple towns. In the case of Nagano, it grew from a temple town which developed around its temple of great importance, Zenkoji.
Just outside the Sanmon Gate stand one large and six medium sized statues of Jizo Bodhisattva. The temple approach leading up to this point is lined with shops selling local specialties and souvenirs, as well as small restaurants. At the southern end of the approach is Niomon Gate, the outer gate of the temple which is guarded by a pair of Nio Guardians.
