Zeravshan Valley and 7 Lakes of Shing- Northern Tajikistan
During my trip across Central Asia I journeyed to this amazing area of Northern Tajikistan. I will let the images speak for themselves. Yes the sky is that blue and yes the lakes are that colour! and glacial cold too!
The Zeravshan Valley (also Zarafshan or Zarafshon) is situated in northern Tajikistan, embedded between the impressive mountain ranges of the western Pamir-Alai massive.“Zeravshan” – which means “Golden River” in Tajik –is the main stream which crosses the valley and which supplies its inhabitants with a most precious resource: water. The area is famous for its unique mountain landscapes and its beautiful lakes: the Alauddin lakes, the Kulikalon lakes, Iskanderkul Lake, the seven lakes of Shing among many others. While being an important tourism and recreation destination during the Soviet era of dispatch tourism, it is now an insiders' tip among those interested in mountain trekking, alpinism and the little travelled branches of the silk road.

Zerafshan Cultural Festival Ganji Zarafshon 2012. Penjikent, Tajikistan
The inaugural Zerafshan Cultural Festival, Ganji Zarafshon 2012 was held from Friday, 08th June 2012 to Sunday, 10th June 2012 in Panjakent, Tajikistan. The event was organized by the Zerafshan Tourism Board in association with the district authorities of Panjakent with support from the German Embassy and Welthungerhilfe (WHH). With a wide variety of Music, native costumes, arts and crafts, the festival displayed the rich culture and Heritage of the Zerafshan Valley.
The Festival was inaugurated at 5 p.m. on Friday the 8th of June in the Football stadium which was followed by a Theatrical show The Great Silk road by local artists depicting local culture and rituals and a musical performance by Nigina Amonkulova a renowned artist from Tajikistan. It was a massive success with Nigina a local from Panjakent performing in front of a 4000 strong home crowd in the Panjakent stadium for the first time. Saturday the 9th of June consisted of costume displays, craft shows and historical games. In the evening there was a performance of a local band Daira.ru followed by the screening of tourism promotion film Discover Zerafshan on the Zerafshan region and its touristic locations. Then on Sunday the 10th of June the final day of the festival there was an excursion arranged to the neighbouring sites of Ancient Panjakent & Sarazm (UNESCO World Heritage site) followed by a visit to the local museum.
The festival was well received by both the local and international audience. It was the first time an event of this scale was held in the Zerafshan Valley. Hopefully the success of the event would just be the beginning and Ganji Zarafshon would go on to become an annual event in years to come.

Tajikistan Mountains:
Practically the entire territory of Tajikistan, 93% of it to be exact, is located in the mountains. Moreover, half of the land lies at a height of over 3000 meters above sea level. There are the Turkestan, Zeravshan, Gissar and Alay Ranges in Tajikistan, and the entire eastern part of the country is covered by the Pamir Range. The highest point of Tajikistan is Ismoil Somoni Peak, which is 7495 meters high (25,590 feet). 24 more peaks over 6000 meters (19,685 feet) are also located in the country.
Tajikistan’s mountains are quite diverse. They vary according to geological classification, relief, glaciation and other characteristics. The most picturesque mountains are in the west of the country – there are ridged peaks, wide gorges, juniper woods, alpine meadows in the Fann Mountains. The Pamirs are also very beautiful and varied, but they differ because of their severe climate, higher ridges and desert plateaus.
Where there are high mountains, there are glaciers, lakes and rivers. 6% of the territory of the country is covered with glaciers, of which Fedchenko is the most popular. Tajikistan has more than 2000 lakes, most of which are in the mountains, such as Iskanderkul, Bulunkul, Karakul, Yashilkul, Sarez, and Seven Lakes. Many wild rivers start in the mountains, flowing from glaciers.
The Fann Mountains
The Fann Mountains are a small mountain system located in the west of Tajikistan, on the border with Uzbekistan. The Fann Mountains include part of the Gissar and Zeravshan Ridges, with eleven peaks over 5000 meters (16,404 feet) high. The highest peak is Chimtarga, at 5489 meters (18,008 feet).

Zeravshan River
Zarafshan River (also Zaravshan or Zarafshon, Tajik: Дарёи ЗарафшонDaryai Zarafshon, Uzbek: Zeravshon, from the Persian word zar-afshān, زرافشان, meaning the spreader of gold) is a river in Central Asia. Its name, spreader of gold in Persian, refers to the presence of gold-bearing sands in the upper reaches of the river. To the ancient Greeks it was known as the Polytimetus. It was also formerly known as Sughd River.
It rises at 39°30′N 70°35′E on the fringes of the Pamirs in Tajikistan, flowing due west for some 300 kilometres (190 mi), passing Penjikent before entering Uzbekistan at 39°32′N 67°27′E, where it turns west-to-north-west, flowing past the legendary city of Samarkand, which is entirely dependent on the oasis thus created, until it bends left again to the west north of Navoiy and further to the south-west, passing Bukhara before it is lost in the desert beyond the city of Qorako‘l (Karakul), not quite reaching the Amu Darya, of which it was formerly a tributary.
Tajikistan aims to construct several hydro-electric power stations on Zerafshan River and has signed the MOU in November 2013 with Zarvon Corporation for the financing and construction of the plants. All previous MOU's have been voided.
