Road Trip #10-A: From SM CIty North EDSA to KM00 Death March Marker, Mariveles, Bataan
800% speed up, driving from SM North to the Kilometer-Zero Death March Marker in Bataan.
I wasn't planning on stopping by SM North from LB, but my (old) navigation phone decided to die while I was still in Calamba, and I needed a way to mount my current phone to the dashboard. A few hours later and I was finally on my way. :v
P.S. Provincial Jollibee branches make for a good parking/resting spot. Hehehe.

Bataan Death March, Philippines
Video clip following the route of the Bataan Death March on the 72nd anniversary of the march that took place on April 9-17, 1942. After the surrender of the U.S.-Filipino Bataan Defense Force to the Japanese on April 9, 1942, thousands of American and Filipino prisoners of war were forced marched from Mariveles and Bagac on the Bataan Peninsula to San Fernando, where they were sent by rail to the concentration camp at Camp O'Donell. Thousands died or were killed on the 102-kilometer march. This view shows the Kilometer Zero Bataan Death March Marker and the drive along the route from Mariveles to kilometer 13.

Bataan: Bagac Mariveles Road
Bataan: Bagac-Mariveles Road
This segment is a 45+Km & is the first time to pass Bagac-Mariveles Road. Some sections of the road are old but seldom used, some are new & some are still dirt roads under construction. The road is passable with all type of vehicles. There are nice views along the way but sad to note that most of the hills are bare except for the cogon growing on rather empty land. A proper reforestation project can make this area green again in no time.
Passed or stopped by the following Points of Interests:
• Japan-Philippines Friendship Tower, Bagac
• Zero Km Death March Marker, Bagac
• Sunmoon Beach Resort, Brgy. Pag-asa, Bagac
• Camaya Coast Entrance, Mariveles
• Mariveles People's Park, Mariveles
• Death March Marker (Zero Km), Mariveles
Thankful for being able to pass by two of the historical landmarks - Zero Km Death March Markers in Bagac & Mariveles. Salute to our WWII heroes!!
Enjoy & have a safe trip!!!

Bataan is a province situated in the Central Luzon region of the Philippines. Its capital is the City of Balanga. Occupying the entire Bataan Peninsula on Luzon, Bataan is bordered by the provinces of Zambales and Pampanga to the north. The peninsula faces the South China Sea to the west and Subic Bay to the north-west, and encloses Manila Bay to the east.
The Battle of Bataan is famous in history as one of the last stands of American and Filipino soldiers before they were overwhelmed by the Japanese forces in World War II. The Bataan Death March was named after the province, where the infamous march started.
There’s the City Hall, an elegant hotel and a mall, all facing the 18th century St. Joseph Cathedral.

Our Dedicated Journey Along the WWII Bataan Death March in the Philippines
Three cousins joined together to walk the Bataan Death March in the Philippines in dedication to their grandfather, Ignacio Umayam, a survivor of the march. The walk happened during the 73rd year anniversary of the World War II event (April 2016). Umayam reportedly survived through 2.5 years of captivity as a prisoner of war under Japanese rule. In dedication, his grandchildren made the same trek in honor of his sacrifice and dedication.
Ignacio 'Michael' Umayam 1919-1996 born in Aguilar, Pangasinan, Philippines, died in Lakewood, WA, USA. A decorated prisoner of war for the US Army and the Philippine Scouts.

This is the continuation of our Bataan Joyride loop. Coming from Morong towards Hermoso and SCTEX. We are currently passing from Camaya Cove in Mariveles as we are headed towards Limay. There were detours along the towns as road works are on going during this documentation. We also see the KM 0 of the Bataan Death march marker. Enjoy watching!
