भारत के ज़ीरो मील पत्थर ॥ Zero Point Milestone Center of India Nagpur
Zero Mile Stone (Marathi: शून्य मैलाचा दगड) is a monument locating the geographical centre of colonial India in the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra. The Zero Mile Stone was erected by the British who used this point to measure all the distances. The Zero Mile Stone consists of four horses and a pillar made up of sandstone. In 2008, The Times of India undertook to maintain the monument for the next 5 years.
It is located on the south east of Vidhan Bhavan, Nagpur.
The British rulers considered Nagpur to be the centre of India and hence identified this point and constructed the Zero Mile Stone. Earlier India was divided into provinces and Nagpur was the capital of CP & Berar Province. Later when states were created, Nagpur was incorporated into Maharashtra, and as Nagpur had been the capital of CP & Berar, even though it was geographically shifted to Maharashtra, the status of second capital was granted to Nagpur.it is also known as capital of Vidarbha.

The Zero Mile Story
When the British came to India, they brought with them the concept of the Zero Mile, i.e., that point or place in a city from where all distances can be measured. Zero Mile in Mumbai was the St Thomas Cathedral in Horniman Circle and was later shifted to the General Post Office at VT.

NAGPUR DIAMOND CROSSING!!BIFURCATION AND TRIPLE TRAIN ACTION@ EXPLAINED IN HINDI !!
A Diamond Crossing in railway terminology is the point where two railway lines cross (not necessarily at right angles, forming the shape of diamonds at the crossing point. They are extremely rare and the most famous one, the Diamond Crossing at Nagpur is a Double Diamond Railway crossing formed by two double lines crossing each other. A lot has been said about this particular point, as the point where lines from the North, South, East and West meet and also, even as the center point of India! It is easy for such things to propagate, especially since the advent of the Internet. The real fact is that it is neither.
First, only three major rail lines meet at Nagpur junction railway station. One comes from the east, from Gondia, the Howrah – Rourkela – Raipur line. The other comes from the north, from New Delhi. The last one goes towards the South, carrying trains to both the west and the south. This line splits into two separate lines to the west (Mumbai) and the South (Kazipet) only at Wardha, some 80 km away. And only one of these lines form part of the diamond crossing, the Gondia line. The other set of tracks forming the diamond crossing is only a service branch line from the Nagpur Freight yard which lies parallel to the passenger platforms and not even a main line. The Diamond Crossing is formed when this service line crosses over the Gondia line to join the main line towards Delhi. Sadly, it is kind of an anti-climax.In fact, it is not even the only Diamond Crossing in India. There is one more right smack in the middle of Delhi! There was another one at Dhanbad junction which was dismantled. There also used to be a perfect 90-degree Diamond Crossing in the new-defunct old Ernakulam Terminusas well.
The British considered Nagpur as the geographic center point of undivided India and erected the zero-mile marker there, but once India was partitioned this shifted and now as per official records the center point of India lies in a forest somewhere near Jabalpur. This village “Karondi” lies is nearest to it.
Now, railway-wise, the “real” point where the North, East, South and West of India meet is at Itarsi Junction railway station, MP. Lines from the North (towards Agra – Delhi), South (towards Nagpur), East (Jabalpur – Allahabad and then Howrah) and West (Khandwa – Mumbai) meet at Itarsi. It also is “center-ish” to India, so guess, that will do.

The Zero Milestone, Washington
The Zero Milestone, Washington
The Zero Milestone in Washington, is based on The Roman Empire’s Golden Milestone, the Zero Milestone was originally intended to be the location from which all distances in the United States were measured. The idea originated with advocate Dr. S. M. Johnson, formally proposed on June 7, 1919. He was inspired by ancient Rome's Golden Milestone located in the Forum, a strong supporter of the Good Roads Movement, which pushed for the construction of better roads across the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
On July 7, 1919, a temporary marker for the Zero Milestone was dedicated on the Ellipse south of the White House during ceremonies launching the Army's first attempt to send a convoy of military vehicles across the country to San Francisco, California. On June 5, 1920, Congress authorized the Secretary of War to erect the current monument, design to be approved by the Commission of Fine Arts and installed at no expense to the government. Dr. Johnson took charge of the details and raised donations for the design and construction. The permanent Zero Milestone was dedicated in a ceremony on June 4, 1923.
The monument stands just south of the White House at the north edge of the Ellipse, within President's Park. A top the monument is a bronze 16-point compass rose with a very small worn-down pyramid at its center whose top serves as a National Geodetic Survey benchmark. Designed by Washington architect Horace W. Peaslee, the monolith is about 2 feet square and about 4 feet high. It is made of precambrian Milford granite from Milford, Massachusetts, light pinkish to greenish gray, with spots of black biotite mica. The bronze disk on top of the milestone is an adaptation from ancient portolan charts of the so-called wind roses or compass roses from the points of which extended radial lines to all parts of the then known world—the prototype of the modern mariner's compass.
The Zero Milestone in Washington never became the American equivalent of Rome's Golden Milestone. Today, it remains in place, baffling tourists and serving mainly as a resting place for their belongings while they take photographs of each other standing in front of the White House. It is forgotten for the most part. Periodically, it is threatened with removal by the National Park Service as it considers options for revitalizing the Ellipse. But for historians, the Zero Milestone marks the place where a new era began.
Zero Milestone in front of the White House. On the other side it says all distances to Washington, D.C. are measured from there.

The British East India Company took over Nagpur in the 19th century and made it the capital of the Central Provinces and Berar. After the first reorganisation of states, the city lost its status as the capital. Following the informal Nagpur Pact between political leaders, it was made the second capital of Maharashtra.
Nagpur is also called the Tiger Capital of India as it connects many tiger reserves in India to the world. It is among the important cities for the Information Technology sector in Maharashtra. Nagpur lies at the dead center of the country with the Zero Mile marker indicating the geographical center of India.

Roman milestone found in Germany
Milestones (Latin: Miliarium) were originally stone obelisks – made from granite, marble, or whatever local stone was available – and later concrete posts. They were widely used by Roman Empire road builders and were an important part of any Roman road network: the distance travelled per day was only a few miles in some cases. Many Roman milestones only record the name of the reigning emperor without giving any placenames or distances. The first Roman milestones appeared on the Appian way. At the centre of Rome, the Golden Milestone was erected to mark the presumed centre of the empire: this milestone has since been lost. The Golden Milestone inspired the Zero Milestone in Washington, D.C., intended as the point from which all road distances in the United States should be reckoned.
A league is a unit of length. It was common in Europe and Latin America, but is no longer an official unit in any nation. The word originally meant the distance a person could walk in an hour. Since the Middle Ages, many values have been specified in several countries.
The league was used in Ancient Rome, defined as 1 1/2 Roman miles (7,500 Roman feet, modern 2.2 km or 1.4 miles). The origin is the leuga Gallica (also: leuca Gallica), the league of Gaul.
