GRAND BUILDINGS - Mosques of Kazakhstan: Wooden mosque in Zharkent, Khazret Sultan mosque
Today the doors of more than three and a half thousand mosques are open for parishioners in Kazakhstan. They were built in different times - the oldest ones were erected several centuries ago, many were opened just recently. Some of them are rightfully recognized as valuable architectural monuments of the country, important cultural and historical buildings of different eras.
Wooden mosque in Zharkent is a unique building. Islamic architecture in combination with the appearance of a Buddhist temple - is a very rare finding in Central Asia. The origins of these styles’ combination should be sought in the history of the time when the temple was built which is the end of the 19th century. back then the Great Silk Road passed through Zharkent, which is located on the border with China. The proximity of the Middle Kingdom influenced not only trade: the symbiosis of cultures left an imprint on many areas of life. the Chinese architect Hon Piquet was invited to the city for the construction of the mosque.

I particularly like the bats because they protect the madrassa from woodworm. They can see at night. Of course a person can't pick up every single worm but the bats can, which stops them from damaging the wood.

LEAD IN:
Built without using one single nail, Zharkent's Yuldashev Mosque is a spectacular example of Kazakhstan's multicultural heritage.
But the exquisitely designed architectural treasure, a combination of Central Asian, Russian and especially Chinese influences, is now a virtually deserted museum.
STORYLINE:
Zharkent is situated in Almaty Region in the far southeast corner of Kazakhstan, at the foot of the Zailysky Alatau mountain range.
The quiet town is the last major settlement in Kazakhstan before the border with China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, 40km to the east.
Its mixed population includes ethnic Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and Russians.
In 1887, local Muslims decided to commission the building of a new mosque.
Led by a Uyghur merchant Alibai Yuldashev, they hired the talents of a Chinese architect Hon Pic, from Beijing.
The mosque was built between 1893 and 1895, the result of a unique religious monument.
Not a single nail was used in its original construction.
But history has since taken its toll on the complex.
An earthquake damaged the buildings, and during the Soviet era, when religious activity was forced underground, the complex was variously used as a stable and even social housing.
In the late 1960s, the former Communist administration decided to turn it into a museum but even today, few tourists make it as far as Zharkent.
The mosque also houses the madrassa.
The two share a 'floating' traditional Chinese roof, ringed by wooden columns.
Its outer beams are decorated with colourful floral designs.
Across the courtyard is the portal, through which the complex is entered.

First Thoughts on Kazakhstan (not what we expected)
Wow this was not where we expected to be today - in central Asia in the 9th largest country in the world - Kazakhstan.
Our journey begun at the Munich airport in Germany as we started a long travel day to the stans, a layover in Minsk, Belarus until we finally arrived in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Even though we arrived at 5am - we wanted to go out and explore so we joined our small group and headed out to our village for the night - Kalinino Basshi village.
There we went out to the Singing Dunes in the Altyn Emel National Park. The next day we further explored the national park - seeing the Turtle mountains - which felt like being on Mars.
After we tried some local Kazakhstan food for lunch we continued our journey onto Zharkent - where we saw the Zharkent Mosque - which is so unique and rare due to it's Chinese/Islamic influence.
We then ended our day in a hot spring that was way to hot for us...wow not what we expected our first few hours in this incredible country to entail.
