Chinese New Year 2017 At Zhinan Temple/Monkey Mountain-Taipei, Taiwan(HD version)
You'd never believe it though when you visit some of the city's most prominent temples. Overflowing with visitors getting in their good luck prayers to ensure a healthy and prosperous year for themselves and their family.
Longshan Temple is by far the most visited with the temple so crowded it's not unusual to get a little poke from someone's incense stick as you make your way through the throngs of people.
Guandu Temple near the old fishing village river port town of Danshui is another favorite with many making their yearly visit to the big complex and oldest in Northern Taiwan.
Another one of my favorite's to visit, especially on a sunny day, is Zhinan Temple on Monkey Mountain near the Taipei Zoo. Accessible by stairs that start at National Chengchi University, it's an approximate 30-40 hike through the forest and jungle to the temple.
If you're not up for the hike the temple can be accessed via the Maokong Gondola near the zoo.
The views are wonderful and the temple complex as one visitor shared with me has perfect Feng Shui, the Chinese belief of harmony with surroundings.
The main Zhinan complex faces south over a beautiful terrace with views of Taipei City and lots of sunny exposure. The back of the temple is on the mountain side, sheltering it from the inclimate weather of the rainy season and winter.
Next to the main Zhinan Temple is the Daxiong Buddhist Chapel, on many days offering a free vegetarian lunch in it's bottom level-a delicious selection of tofu, vegetables, rice, and soup.
After lunch I sat in the courtyard of the Daxiong Chapel, listening to the recorded traditional music playing as I gazed out at the hills checkered with small vegetable/produce farms, little tea plantations and the Maokong Gondola transporting people through the hills. Later watching groups paying respects at the temple with offerings and prayers.
Feeling refreshed, alive, and full of chi,(good energy), I made my way down the stairs to complete a perfect way to spend a day in Taipei during the Lunar New Year(Chinese New Year), holiday.
Getting there:Take the MRT brown line to Taipei Zoo. Cross the road from the MRT station and take bus 236 and get off at National Chengchi University. There are signs to the trails at the plaza entrance.

Taipei, Taiwan.
Reaching the Maokong station at the top of a mountain by using the scenic cable car Maokong Gondola tour. Amazing view and if you're lucky with the weather you can see the skyscraper Taipei 101: the tallest building in Taiwan.
The Maokong Gondola has four passenger stations:
- Taipei Zoo
- Taipei Zoo South

Zhinan TEMPLE by CABLE CAR to reach this place from TAIPEI ZOO Station
Zhinan Temple Station. Zhinan Temple, also known as Xiangong Temple, honors the Master Lu Dungbin. This Taoist master is very deeply adored by the people, and is addressed by the respectful term of Xiangong rather than his name. Zhinan Temple is located 2 kilometers past National Chengchi University on Monkey Mountain.

We ride on the Maokong Gondola, a 4 kilometer cable car between the Taipei Zoo and Maokong, a tea growing town at the top of the mountain. Along the way, we stop at Zhinan Temple, a Daoist temple complex clinging to the mountainside.

Maokong Gondola: Leaving the Taipei Zoo Station (Video 1)
Opened on July 4, 2007, the Maokong Gondola operates between Taipei Zoo and Maokong. The 4.3 km (2.7 mi) line has four stations. Since March 30, 2010, 30 cabins have been retrofitted with 48mm thick glass bottoms, each weighing 213 kg. They operate with a service interval of three minutes. The capacity is limited to five persons per cabin. Crystal cabins, also called “Eyes of Maokong Gondola”, have their own waiting queue and a computer managed ticketing system, instructing passengers to enter the queue at a specified time. Currently, the price for taking a crystal cabin is NT$50, or the same as that of regular cabins. The cost of each cabin modification was NT$200,000.
The Zhinan Temple (指南宮), with its own station, is one of the most important of Taiwan's early Taoist temples. Its dedicated to main deity Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, and various other deities.
There are numerous tea gardens in the Maokong and Muzha Tea Plantations area. Many tea makers have tasting rooms for sampling the latest teas, or will do so by appointment while the Taipei Tea Promotion Center offers introduction to tea picking, processing, brewing and free taste testing.

TRAVEL TAIPEI TAIWAN | Maokong Tea House 貓空泡茶 #7
I'm ashamed to say this is only my 1st time here since #MaokongGondola opened in 2007. Although I've heard plenty of positive comments about the gondola, I just never wanted to go out of my way to experience first hand. This time, since Kevin's here, I thought I might as well give it a shot and see what the fuss is all about!
Let me tell you, I regretted that I haven't come here sooner. This from the gondola to uphill #Maokong #TeaHouse is seriously a package experience. For tourists, this is a unique experience to learn about the tea culture and appreciate the natural sceneries along the trails or on the cable cars. Maokong has completely thrown me out of my expectation as to what the city of Taipei could offer. This is a place that I will 100% recommend for anyone visiting Taiwan, whether it's the 1st time or the 100th time.

2016 Monkey Business in Taiwan..
We bought a bunch of bananas to feed the wild monkeys in Taiwan. Kids loved it. It was interesting to watch them. There was a clear hierarchy of power in the group. There was one dominant male who kept them all in line.

TAIWAN 2019
First of all, I want to give the biggest thanks to Gene Chiu, without him and his family none of this could have been possible. From organizing our trip day to day, hosting us everywhere we go, always finding vegan restaurants, renting cars and navigating, to figuring out all of our accommodations. We really couldn't have asked for a better person to host us.
We spent three weeks in Taiwan going around the entire island, to the east which is known for it's amazing nature and landscapes, to the west which is full of fascinating cities and shores, to the center spine that stretches the entire length of the island with beautiful mountains that can sore over 4000 meters high. It was one of the most profound trips we have ever been on and I truly cannot believe that in visiting Taiwan for the third time, I would see and do more than during the first two trips combined.
It honestly was a challenge to try and capture so many moments that felt perfect in real life. I truly hope that in some way or another anyone who watches this can get a glimpse of how surreal it all was. I hope you all enjoy watching the video of our trip and tell me what you think!
