The 3 famous Pagodas in Dali, China
#Dali, #China
28 – 29 October 2016
In Dali you can hike the Cloud Traveller's Path, visit the Zhonghe Temple, take the Cangshan Cable Car, bike around the Erhai Lake and climb the Jizu Mountain. Unfortunately it was raining cats and dogs. We only take a walk through the Old City of Dali and visited the Chongsheng Temple to see the world famous three Pagodas.
Good shelters for the rain are the Bakery88 and Tin Tin Belgian Waffles.

Musical Group at Zhonghe Si temple, near Dali in China.
This clip was shot in Dali on the 14/12/2003. I decided to walk. The Lonely Planet says an hour but it took me 25 minutes to get to the base of the mountain. It took me some time to find a path. I was worried that no other tourists were about. I was a little apprehensive about this hike since a German tourist had been robbed and murdered on this path in 1997. it took me 50 minutes to climb there. I saw no other people. When i was a bout to leave back down a TV crew arrrived with about 20 girls dressed in BA ethnic clothing and a 4 man band. They were filming a tourism poromotional video. I watched as the music played (it was excellent) and the girls danced.

The Cang Mountains (Cangshan)are a mountain range west of Dali City. Their snow-capped peaks, flowing clouds, murmuring brooks, diverse flora, and historical temples make them one of the most famous attractions in Dali.
It is a great place to enjoy a bird's eye view of Erhai Lake and Dali Ancient Town. Cable car and hiking are both great ways to enjoy the scenery of the mountains.
Chinese: 苍山Cāngshān / tsanng-shan / 'Dark Green Mountains'
Height: The highest summit is 4, 122 m (13, 524 ft).
Popular activities: taking a cable car, hiking

4 Highlights of the Cang Mountains
The Cang Mountains stretches for over 50 km north to south and has 19 peaks, with the tallest being Malong at 4, 122 meters (13, 524 feet). Picturesque creeks run between each of the summits, and serene waterfalls cascade their way down the rocks.
1. Xima Pond (‘Washing Horses Pond ’)
Ximatan (洗马潭)is an alpine lake with an altitude of 3, 920 meters (12, 861 feet). It is famous for its limpid water and enchanting scenery around it. From March to May, blooming azaleas and lush brushwood make the lake more gorgeous.
According to legend, Kublai Khan, the emperor who founded Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), once bathed his horses in the pond when he defeated the Dali Kingdom. So it was named Ximatan, ‘Washing Horses Pond ’.
2. Qingbi Stream (‘Clear Green Stream ’)
The Cang Mountains consists of 19 peaks. There is a brook between each of the peaks, 18 brooks in total. Qingbi Stream (清碧溪)is the most famous one. It is very relaxing to walk in the tranquil forest and listen to the gurgling stream.
3. Butterfly Spring
Butterfly Spring (蝴蝶泉)is at the foot of Yunnong Peak, about 40 km from Malong Peak. It is like a gem laying in the green shade of the mountains. If you visit between April and May when all kinds of flowers are in blossom, you will see thousands of bufferflies around the spring.
4. Buddhist Temples
Apart from natural scenery, you can also visit some historical temples in the mountains, like Gantong Temple, and Zhonghe Temple.
Taking a Cable Car
There are three cableways in the mountains: Ximatan Cableway, Zhonghe Cableway, and Gantong Cableway.
Ximatan Cableway
Ximatan Cableway is the longest one, with a length of 5, 555 meters (18, 225 feet), and takes you to an altitude of about 4, 000 meters (13, 123 feet).
Ximatan Cableway has a mid-way station where you can get off to take some pictures. The whole journey is about 40 minutes. If it is too windy, you will end your journey at the mid station.
As the most expensive cableway, it offers the best scenery . You will enjoy panoramic views of Dali Ancient Town and Erhai Lake, and see different mountain scenes: from pine forests and alpine lakes to patches of snow.
Other Cableways
The other cableways will get half way you up the mountains. If you have no shortage of time and energy, you can take one of these cableways and then climb to the top.
Cableway Costs:
Ximatan Cableway:300 yuan for a round trip, 150 for one way
Gantong Cableway:80 yuan for a round trip, 50 for one way
Zhonghe Cableway:100 yuan for a round trip, 50 for one way
Hiking
Hiking up the mountains is popular. The main route is not actually a difficult wild hike, since most of the time you'll be on concrete steps and paths.
Most hikers start from Dali Movie Studio and hike for about one hour to Jade Belt Road (or called Cloud Traveller's Path)— an 18-km (11-mile)paved trail that runs from the south to the north of the mountains.
Leave yourself an entire day to enjoy the beautiful views up on the mountains if you want to
do hiking all the way.
The Best Way — Cableways and Hiking
The best way to enjoy the scenery of the mountains is to combine cableways and hiking , saving time and energy for the best bits.
You can take one of cableways up to the Cloud Traveller's Path, hike along the path to enjoy the views on the mountains, and then take another cableway down to the foot of the mountains.

The Guanyin Tang temple (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) Guanyin Temple (Guanyintang in Chinese) is located in the south of Old Town of Dali, about 10 minutes' drive. Popularly enshrined and worshipped in Dali area, Guanyin has been regarded as a Patron God or Goddess of Bai minority. Buddhism in Dali could be taken as Yunnan Esoteric or Dian Mi, in which Guanyin is much more important than Buddha; experts referred to the Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) there as Arcarya Guanyin (A Cuo Ye in Chinese) who is much slimmer than those elsewhere. It's even said that Pi Luoge, the founder of the Nanzhao Kingdom, had been nominated by Guanyin as the governor of the Six Tribes at that time. Among Buddhist temples in Dali, Guanyin temples or shrines are the majority, and Guanyin Tang or Guanyin Temple is the most famous one.

Travel China Yunnan Dali - Bai Temple Music Festival - Part 5
Wondering the narrow alleyways of Erhai lakeshore villages near Dali in Yunnan Province of southwestern China one can get lucky and stumble upon a genuine Bai village temple fest. Tourists who prefer to keep to Dali guidebooks most recommended sites seldom visit the smallest of these villages. Yet it is here at a typical village temple that a village folk gathering can be found worshiping. There are no guests, no outside visitors and the immensely enjoyable spectacle usually lasts all day. The participants, including the orchestra members are the villagers themselves. All of them take part; they are who live in the small village, sharing in the worship and the eventual feast. Both men and women participate, the women first in their own temple, and then together with men they light the auspicious incense in the main temple. After worship the participants gather to enjoy some of the foods the women cooked and offered as temple offerings to the gods pig head, rooster, bowl of spicy fish, plates of colored noodles, cups of rice, fruits, chilly and vegetables, all staple parts of their diet. This gathering and communal temple worship and meal was preceded by five days of abstinence from eating meat. The music and chants are mesmerizing, downright hypnotic. All villagers sport smiles and deep-rooted joy in participating. Their simple, authentic local celebration exudes in genuine display of friendship toward one another.
