The beauty of Kinmen's village at the Folk Cultural Village
There are two kinds of roofs for traditional buildings, they are the horse back shaped and swallowtail shaped ones.
Horseback varieties are for peasants while the swallowtail versions are only for government officials. But since Kinmen is so far away from the capital, there was no need to follow this tradition when building houses.

TAIWAN: SECURITY TIGHTENED ON QUEMOY ISLAND
Natural Sound
The small island of Quemoy, just off the coast of mainland China, isn't often in the news.
But with tensions rising between China and Taiwan the focus has moved onto the island, which could become part of the frontline if the two countries went to war.
APTV has been to visit Quemoy, and has found that while security measures are tight, there's a large although unofficial trade with the mainland.
Quemoy -- just two kilometres off the coast of southeast China. By night security is tight and much of the heavily fortified island is a restricted area.
Military bases and bunkers are guarded by checkpoints and road blocks.
Quemoy's 30,000 soldiers are on alert - mainland China has massed thousands of troops just two kilometres across the straits.
But by day the situation is different. The political tension is contrasted against the economic closeness between the island and the mainland.
Direct links with China are forbidden under Taiwanese law but trade between the two is an open secret. The black market trade is thriving - about a third of the food on the island is smuggled in by Chinese fishermen.
Much of the produce on sale here in the market comes from the mainland. Local fisherman sail out to the straits to exchange goods with their Chinese counterparts out of sight of the military.
Chinese good are everywhere - Taiwanese producers cannot match their low prices.
Officials ignore the trade and most locals refuse to discuss it publicly.
In private, however, most freely admit how much the island relies on Chinese goods.
Tourism is another growing source of revenue for Quemoy. The antique shops on the island rely on Chinese goods to make a profit.
Everything from these teapots to simple scrolls are illegally imported onto Quemoy. In theory people returning to Taiwan risk them being confiscated by customs, but often a blind eye is turned.
Incomes on Quemoy are as low as U-S dollars 6,500 - less than two thirds of the national average. Islanders are continually pushing for direct links - many believe that without Chinese business and investment the island's economic future is bleak.
