China, Like You've Never Seen — Wuhan, Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang, Changsha | The Travel Intern
Usually when we think of China, the first things that come to mind (well, at least for us at first) are the Great Wall of China, the Tiananmen Square, Shanghai’s bustling city… But that’s not all there is!
Check out our full itinerary across Wuhan, Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang and Changsha here:
WUHAN (00:35)
00:36 - Yellow Crane Tower
This is probably the most iconic sight in Wuhan, where local tourists and locals both come to visit all year round.
00:50 - Guiyuan Temple
One of the four largest meditation temples in Hubei province. It’s where people go to burn the first bunch of incense for the coming year, and also to pray for auspiciousness and safety.
00:57 - Moshan Scenic Area
If you ever need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main city, this is the perfect place to head to in Wuhan.
01:17 - Hubu Alley
It’s not a visit to Wuhan if you don’t visit Hubu Alley, the alley full of breakfast food specialties of Wuhan! And it holds significance value to the city’s history too.
ZHANGJIAJIE (01:33)
01:35 - Avatar Mountains
Here, you get to behold the place that was a huge inspiration to the creation of Avatar’s Hallelujah Mountains landscape. It’s super crowded though, so be prepared!!
01:43 - Bailong Elevator
The world’s tallest and heaviest outdoor lift surely deserves a feature. It’s actually one of the only ways to get from Yuanjiajie area to Wulingyuan, so do take note if you’re travelling to and fro the destinations.
02:02 - Tianzi Mountain
One of the best sunrise spots in Zhangjiajie, Tianzi Mountain area is one of the more hidden, less crowded spots in Zhangjiajie National Park.
02:09 - Imperial Brush Peaks
Watch as the fog lifts in the early morning, revealing these rock formations that line up like brush tips.
02:16 - Baofeng Lake
After a looooong day out exploring ZJJ, this lake ride is what you need to rest your weary feet.
02:24 - Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge
You’d have probably seen videos of people acting like the world’s gonna end while they’re shaking on this glass bridge. It’s actually not scary, considering how there are so many people on the bridge you don’t really think about the height.
*DO SET ASIDE 3 HOURS for this entire glass bridge experience though, because after going past the bridge, you have to walk through a pretty long way through the forest below. It’s pretty damn scenic and you’d probably be snapping photos non-stop.*
02:50 - Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen Mountain is down in the main city of Zhangjiajie, not in the region of Zhangjiajie National Park. There are even more glass bridges to cross ;-)
FENGHUANG (03:08)
03:11 - Fenghuang Village
Ancient, historic city by day, crazy party land by night. Truly an experience, if you ask me.
CHANGSHA (03:23)
03:26 - Juzizhou AKA Orange Isle
If you search for ‘Changsha’ in Google, or any search engine, this would probably pop up as the iconic landmark of the city. Learn about Mao’s history and background here!
03:42 - Yuelu Shan AKA Mount Yuelu
Just like in Wuhan, Yuelu Shan offers the ultimate getaway from the bustling city.
04:00 - Meixihu International Culture & Arts Center
It almost feels like you’ve stepped into another planet, honestly…
04:14 - Huangxing Walking Road
We spent many nights here, eating, shopping, eating, eating, eating and more eating. Freaking AMAZING food found all along this stretch of road that goes on for kilometres… Be sure to try their specialties!
AND THERE YOU HAVE IT, China like you’ve never seen!!!

Dazzling theme park unveiled in southeast China
(28 May 2016) China's largest private property developer, the Wanda Group, opened an entertainment complex on Saturday that it's positioning as competition for Disney and its 5.5 billion US dollar Shanghai theme park opening next month.
Wanda executives unveiled their 3 billion US dollar Wanda City in the southeastern provincial capital of Nanchang to thundering music reminiscent of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme and hailed the centre as a representative of Chinese entertainment culture in the face of foreign influences.
As a leading player in Chinese firms' globalisation push, the property group has invested heavily in the film and cinema business and has spoken openly about overtaking Disney as a leading entertainment brand as a matter of nationalistic duty.
Wanda's massive site includes an 800 million US dollar theme park, an indoor shopping mall with cinemas, restaurants, hotels and the world's largest ocean park.
Disney is set to open its own resort in Shanghai — the largest Disneyland in the world — in June.
In remarks at Saturday's opening, Wang Jianlin, Wanda chairman and China's richest man, did not mention Disney by name but said Chinese people fawned over Western culture.
Chinese culture led in the world for 2,000 years, but for the last 300 years, because of our lagging development and the invasion of foreign cultures, we have more or less lacked confidence in our own culture, Wang said.
We want to be a model for Chinese private enterprise, and we want to establish a global brand for Chinese firms.
Earlier this month he told Chinese state television in an interview that Disney's foray into China would crumble under more competitive pricing from his group, and warned that the the frenzy of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and the era of blindly following them has passed.
Wanda's deal-making has been similarly aggressively as it quickly diversifies away from China's weakening real estate market.
The group purchased US-based AMC Theaters cinema chain in 2012 for 2.5 billion US dollars and paid 3.5 billion US dollars for Legendary Entertainment — the Hollywood studio behind the Batman franchise — earlier this year as it ramped up its international push.
Even so, signs of Disney's foreign presence abounded in newly opened Wanda City.
Thousands of tourists who paid 198 yuan for a ticket (about 30 US dollars) on Saturday's opening were greeted by storm troopers, the armoured soldiers from the Star Wars franchise owned by Disney.
