Fighting Criminals in Ukraine Archives - Alex Krakovsky Fights for Open Access in Ukraine (VLOG #27)
In today's Vlog I update you on the work that Alex Krakovsky is conducting to create open access in archives in Ukraine. In a previous video I discussed how Alex was suing the Zhytomyr archives because they were doing illegal things in the way they ran the archive. Alex won that case but now has a new case against the Kyiv Archives and Ministry of Justice in Ukraine. A proclamation was passed by the Ministry of Justice which regulates what documents can be digitized, how they can be digitized, and where they can be digitized. Documents that are larger than an A4 paper size or books thicker than 4 can't be digitized. Anything handwritten, any paintings, or anything in pen is also banned from being digitized. For the few items that you can digitize you must submit requests to the archive, which can be denied for any reason, and you then must take your photos it in a designated space or in a private room under supervision. You can only takes photos using your phone or a tablet, not even professional scanners such as CZUR scanners are allowed.
The Ukraine Regulatory Service has said that this proclamation is illegal and that the Ministry of Justice must stop this regulations they are enacting. The proclamation directly conflicts with the law, which was upheld in Alex Krakovsky's case against the Zhytomyr Archives. It is also causing serious disruption to the work Alex is doing in digitizing records as well as other researchers in Ukraine, such as Sergii Fazulyonov who has helped me with records in Vinnytsia, Ukraine. These digitization efforts are some of the best ways of preserving these fragile documents. Brazil lost millions of artifacts recently in a Museum fire and this could easily happen in Ukraine, mostly because it already happened at the Kamenets-Podolsky archive in 2003. Hopefully Alex will win this case and be able to resume digitizing the records held in the Kyiv archives and elsewhere in Ukraine.

At least two people were killed and a further six injured when a bus was hit by artillery fire in north-west Donetsk, Tuesday morning. Bus No 6. was travelling along Marshal Zhukov Avenue in the Kuybishevskiy district at 08.00 local time when it came under fire. Windows at the front and back of the bus were all blown out by the impact or shrapnel. Footage shows the damaged bus waiting for repairs in a Donetsk garage.
The district falls within an area of Donetsk that has been hit heavily by the Ukrainian military stationed at the village of Pesky, less than five km (3.10 miles) away. The head of the neighbouring Kievskiy District Administration, Ivan Prykhodko, said that School No. 21 as well as a number of local residences were also hit in the barrage.
According to authorities of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR/DPR) the Kuybishevskiy, Kievskiy and Leninskiy districts have repeatedly come under shelling since Monday evening.

BATTLE OF THE DNIEPER RIVER 1943 EASTERN FRONT WWII UKRANIAN NEWSREEL 9 50494
This Ukranian-language newsreel shows the WWII era victory of the Soviet Army at Stalingrad, the Caucasus, and Orel-Kursk Salient Battle which changed the course of the war. The film begins in 1943 with the Battle of the Dnieper River. Soviet troops began the liberation of Eastern Ukraine.
The Battle of the Dnieper was a military campaign that took place in 1943 on the Eastern Front of World War II. It was one of the largest operations in World War II, involving almost 4,000,000 troops on both sides and stretching on a 1,400 kilometres (870 mi) long front. During its four-month duration, the eastern bank of the Dnieper was recovered from German forces by five of the Red Army's fronts, which conducted several assault river crossings to establish several heavily fortified areas on the western bank. Subsequently, Kiev was liberated in the Battle of Kiev.
One of the costliest operations of the war, the casualties are estimated at being from 1,700,000 to 2,700,000 on both sides. One of the most tragic events took place during the establishment of so-called Bukryn lodgement near the village of Malyi Bukryn (Myronivka Raion). The Soviet writer and war veteran Viktor Astafyev in his memoirs was recalling that 25,000 soldiers who entered the Dnieper from one side, would exit the river on the other side in amounts of 5-6,000.
2,438 soldiers were awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union which was more than had been awarded previously since the award's establishment and never again was there such a big number of laureates.
The narrator says: The German staff was confident that the mighty fortification so-called eastern shaft, the main part of which runs along the Dnieper - was impregnable. The Dnieper River will flow backwards before the Russians overcome us boasted Hitler.
But Soviet Army Lieutenant Yuri Melkov wrote: The Dneiper is a natural barrier. I can not say that this is nonsense. The steep, high banks that the Germans strengthened for two years. But Kiev is awaiting us, and we will come.
Yuri commanded a unit of well-known Katyusha rockets. He was a Knight of the Order of the Red Star. After his commander was killed in battle by the Germans, he became the battalion commander. The General told him: You are now a commander, you need to have a shave.
It was important not to allow the Germans to recover, and for us to cross the Dnieper River to the east and grab a foothold on its right bank. At the end of September 1943 the main forces of the Voronezh Front began to cross the Dnieper. Troops seized a bridgehead in the mouth of Pripyat (mark 3:31). The troops of the Southwestern Front began the crossing at the city Dnipropetrovsk (mark 3:44).
As a result of fierce battles the troops, with the active help of the local population and the guerrillas, created 23 bridgeheads on the right bank. Two of them were at Bukrin Lyutizh and played a crucial role in the liberated Kiev. The Nazis tried to push our troops back into the Dnieper River.
Every piece of land has been watered with the blood of Soviet soldiers. On October 10, 1943, in the battle for Lyutizh, Lieutenant Yuri Melkov died a heroic death. The Motherland will never forget the names of all the living and the fallen heroes, as well as not to forget the name of Yuri Melkova. Here in Lyutizhi, we erected a monument. The school museum contains his personal belongings, letters, photos and all his medals are preserved. No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten!
The End.

Ukraine War. Latest Hot News! Subscribe to the channel!
Thank you for joining us!
There is a war between the Russians, the local population that lives here 1000 years and the Nazi government in Kiev, which the United States led to power.
As a result of the bloody coup, the Nazis from Western Ukraine came to power.
They are a minority, and in the case of democratic elections, they would never have come to power. Then the USA made a bloody coup, as they are able to do it all over the world.
Thus, the USA went to war against the Russian population of the South and East of Ukraine, who lived here 1,000 years and no where to go will not, of course.

SUMMARY
=======
Euromaidan (; Ukrainian: Євромайдан, Russian: Евромайдан, Yevromaidan, literally Euro[pean] Square) was a wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine, which began on the night of 21 November 2013 with public protests in Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kiev. The protests were sparked by the Ukrainian government's decision to suspend the signing of an association agreement with the European Union, instead choosing closer ties to Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union. The scope of the protests soon widened, with calls for the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych and his government. The protests were fueled by the perception of widespread government corruption, abuse of power and violation of human rights in Ukraine. Transparency International named President Yanukovych as the top example of corruption in the world. The situation escalated after the violent dispersal of protesters on 30 November, leading to many more protesters joining. The protests led to the 2014 Ukrainian revolution.
During the Euromaidan, there were protests and clashes with police throughout Ukraine, especially at the Maidan in Kiev, which was occupied and barricaded by protesters, along with some administrative buildings, including Kiev City State Administration. On 8 December the crowd toppled Lenin statue nearby, police did not intrude. Protests and clashes increased in January, after the Ukrainian parliament passed a group of anti-protest laws. Protesters occupied government buildings in many regions of Ukraine. The protests climaxed in mid-February. Riot police advanced towards Maidan and clashed with protesters but did not fully occupy it. Police and activists fired live and rubber ammunition at multiple locations in Kyiv. There was fierce fighting in Kiev on February 18–20, in which 77 activists and 17 police officers were killed (see List of people killed during Euromaidan). Academic research suggests that many protesters were shot from locations controlled by Euromaidan. As a result of these events, Yanukovych was forced to make concessions to the opposition to end the bloodshed in Kiev and end the crisis. The Agreement on settlement of political crisis in Ukraine was signed by Vitaly Klitschko, Arseny Yatsenyuk, Oleh Tyahnybok. The signing was witnessed by the Foreign Ministers of Germany and Poland, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Radosław Sikorski, respectively, and the Director of the Continental Europe Department of the French Foreign Ministry, Eric Fournier. Vladimir Lukin, representing Russia, refused to sign the agreement.
The day the agreement was signed, the motorcade of Yanukovych was fired upon and shortly after that Yanukovych and other high government officials fled the country. Protesters gained control of the presidential administration and Yanukovych's private estate. Afterwards, the parliament removed Yanukovych from office, replaced the government with Oleksandr Turchynov, and ordered that former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko be released from prison. Events in Kyiv were soon followed by the Crimean crisis and pro-Russian unrest in Eastern Ukraine. Despite the ousting of Yanukovych, the installation of a new government, and the adoption of the Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement's political provisions, the protests have sustained pressure on the government to reject Russian influence in Ukraine.

Sergei Korolev
Sergei Pavlovich Korolev, also transliterated as Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov; 12 January [O.S. 30 December 1906] 1907 – 14 January 1966) was the lead Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer in the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the 1950s and 1960s. He is considered by many as the father of practical astronautics.
Although Korolev was trained as an aircraft designer, his greatest strengths proved to be in design integration, organization and strategic planning. Arrested for alleged mismanagement of funds, he was imprisoned in 1938 for almost six years, including some months in a Kolyma labour camp. Following his release, he became a recognized rocket designer and a key figure in the development of the Soviet Intercontinental ballistic missile program. He was then appointed to lead the Soviet space program, made Member of Soviet Academy of Sciences, overseeing the early successes of the Sputnik and Vostok projects that include launching Yuri Alexeevich Gagarin into orbit on 12 April 1961, the first human in space. By the time he died unexpectedly in 1966, his plans to compete with the United States to be the first nation to land a man on the Moon had begun to be implemented.

Artist Paints Life Into Ruins: Desolate Ukrainian village becomes artists' canvas
At first glance, this tiny village in western Ukraine looks like it's long been abandoned. The residents are few and the buildings are in disrepair. But if you look closer, there's something quite distinctive that stands out in the vast landscape - and that is, beautiful artworks.
We meet Oleksiy Aleshkin, the master behind many works in the picturesque settlement. Having moved here 36 years ago, he knows every house and cellar by the back of his hand.
He explains:
This is all natural rock. But people have attached their own stones they found. (I believe) every person needs to fight for the spirits in their soul.
Oleksiy and his wife have painted eight houses here; now they have a puppet theatre and a house with paintings, pottery and musical instruments.
(This is) the musicians room. You can play any of instruments - wood, metal or traditional ones
The village school in Bukatynka once housed 400 students - now just 18 study here. One teacher points out where bright paintings of traditional Easter Eggs, flowers and feathers used to glow; now just fire extinguishers hang here. But it’s not all bad news - the local authorities recently presented the local artists with an old house near the main road to paint on.
“Red is a very dangerous colour - the colour of blood and love. Who is such colour dangerous for? Anyone? Who's afriad?”
It's hoped the homes Oleksiy has painted will become part of the village’s history.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Sergei Pavlovich Korolev (Russian: Серге́й Па́влович Королёв, IPA: [sʲɪrˈgʲej ˈpavɫəvʲɪtɕ kərɐˈlʲɵf] (listen), also transliterated as Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov, Ukrainian: Сергій Павлович Корольов / Serhiy Pavlovych Korolyov; 12 January 1907 (OS 30 December 1906) – 14 January 1966, was a lead Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer during the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s. He is regarded by many as the father of practical astronautics. He was involved in the development of the R-7 Rocket, Sputnik 1, and launching Laika and the first human being, Yuri Gagarin, into space.Although Korolev trained as an aircraft designer, his greatest strengths proved to be in design integration, organization and strategic planning. Arrested on a false official charge as a member of an anti-Soviet counter-revolutionary organization (which would later be reduced to saboteur of military technology), he was imprisoned in 1938 for almost six years, including some months in a Kolyma labour camp. Following his release he became a recognized rocket designer and a key figure in the development of the Soviet Intercontinental ballistic missile program. He later directed the Soviet space program and was made a Member of Soviet Academy of Sciences, overseeing the early successes of the Sputnik and Vostok projects including the first human Earth orbit mission by Yuri Alexeyvich Gagarin on 12 April 1961. Korolev's unexpected death in 1966 interrupted implementation of his plans for a Soviet manned Moon landing before the United States 1969 mission.
Before his death he was officially identified only as Glavny Konstruktor (Главный Конструктор), or the Chief Designer, to protect him from possible cold war assassination attempts by the United States. Even some of the cosmonauts who worked with him were unaware of his last name; he only went by Chief Designer. Only following his death in 1966 was his identity revealed and he received the appropriate public recognition as the driving force behind Soviet accomplishments in space exploration during and following the International Geophysical Year.
