This railway in the Blue Mountains here in New South Wales, Australia is considered a master-piece of Victorian Engineering. Built between 1866 and 1869, as part of the Western main line fron Sydney to Bathurst. This line forms a large letter Z in the side of the mountain. A necessary way of gaining enough height to go over these mountains, as tunneling was expensive and still in the early stages of development. Zig Zag Railway - Australia's Blue Mountains
The Zig Zag is a full size, narrow gauge tourist railway located at Clarence, ten km east of Lithgow in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia.
Built in the 1860s, the line was constructed to transport people and produce from the western plains of NSW to Sydney. It was replaced in 1910 by a 10 tunnel deviation.
The trains, track and rollingstock are maintained and operated by the Zig Zag Railway Co-op Ltd, a voluntary, “not for profit’ co-operative.
The Zig Zag Railway can be reached by road or by CityRail train. Zig Zag trains run every day of the year (except Christmas Day)

The Zig Zag Railway near Lithgow New South Wales was originally standard gauge and after many years of disuse after another route was opened, the lower section was laid in 3ft 6in gauge. This video taken in the early days of home video, shows a train in charge of a steam locomotive obtained from the Queensland Government Railways with three passenger carriages obtained from the South Australia Government Railways.

We go over the Blue Mountains to look at some interesting and fun places.
Lithgow is a city in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia and is the administrative centre of the City of Lithgow local government area. It is located in a mountain valley named Lithgow's Valley by John Oxley in honour of William Lithgow, the first Auditor-General of New South Wales.
Lithgow is on the Great Western Highway, about 150 km (93 mi) or two hours drive west of Sydney, or via the old mountain route, Bells Line of Road, from Windsor. Geographically, it is situated on the far western side of the Sydney basin. At 30 June 2016 Lithgow had an estimated urban population of 13,095.
Lithgow is surrounded by a varied landscape which includes national parks, one of which, the Blue Mountains National Park, is a World Heritage Area. The Wollemi National Park is home to the Jurassic-age tree the Wollemi Pine, which was found growing in a remote canyon in the park.

The railway was aiming to resume services in October 2013, but was then severely damaged during the 2013 NSW Bushfires and then subsequently by torrential rain. Repairs are ongoing and trials of restored rail vehicles and track commenced in August 2016 and it is planned to re-commence limited heritage operations in 2019.

It is a chance to appreciate the difficult terrain that confronted the builders and marvel at how they brought the railway down into the Lithgow Valley and on westward.

The famous ZigZag Railway at Lithgow in NSW is a great way to experience the bygone era of the steam train. Travel down the steep mountain side through tunnels and over viaducts through picturesque scenery on board the restored 18 1/4 steam engine. An experience the children loved.
