European Rail Tours, Germany and Austria Jenbach & Achensee Austria 2012
WWW.Reynaulds.com Check out our famous REI TOURS.
This video covers some of our 2012 Oktoberfest trip in Germany and Austria. Our trip today starts in Jenbach Austria. For Railroad Fans Jenbach is a must to see because Jenbach has three different railroad gauges. Jenbach has normal standard gauge, narrow gauge and narrow rack gauge. Two famous Austrian railroad lines start in Jenbach, the Zillertal Railroad and the Achensee Rack Railroad. The Achensee rack line takes you all the way to the top of the mountain to the Achensee Lake. The locomotives that hauled our train are 123 years old and they are still running. This was one of the best train rides, I have ever been on and I highly recommend it to every rail fan. Even if your not a rail fan, this is a very scenic part of Austria. Jenbach Railway Station Tyrol Austria Bahnhof Jenbach in Tirol Österreich
Scenes from Jenbach Railway Station on the Unterinntalbahn in Western Austria. Together with being a busy station for passing trains on the ÖBB main line, it is the terminal for both the narrow gauge Zillertalbahn & Achenseebahn. Both regularly operate steam service while the latter is a full time steam service on Europe's oldest unelectrified rack railway.
OBB and Zillertalbahn trains at Jenbach, Austria in 2005
Back in 2005 I was on vacation in Jenbach, Austria (about 30 km east of Innsbruck), the junction of the 760mm gauge Zillertalbahn line to Mayrhofen. In those days the Zillertalbahn carried full-size mainline freight wagons of forest products to a factory up the line at Fugen, and I watched the loading of the narrow-gauge transporter 'trucks' in the yard at Jenbach. The middle part of this video shows some of the wagon loading process (from the 2 minute point), the rest is a variety of passenger and freight trains on the OBB mainline, plus a track maintenance train.
Zillertalbahn narrow gauge railway. Austrian Tyrol Tourism. Volksmusik Österreich.
The Zillertalbahn (or the Ziller Valley Railway) is a 19-mile narrow gauge railway route from Mayrhofen, the terminus, through the valley to Jenbach which is one of very few stations to have rail lines of three different gauges. The standard gauge rail system, the Zillertalbahn having a 760 mm (2 ft 515⁄16 in) narrow gauge and the metre gauge for the Achenseebahn steam powered rack railway which, of course, is another “ Must Visit ” steam railway if you are ever in the area.
The video trip begins at Mayrhofen station and is steam hauled by Zillertalbahn No.4, former Yugoslavian States Railway JDŽ 83-076. At Zell am Ziller Station the train is joined by Michael to add his brilliant typical Austrian Tyrol Volksmusik Österreich entertainment to the most wonderful views that can be seen from the train.
Opened in 1902 the length of the line is 31.7 km (19.7 miles).
It is important to note that some of the Zillertal Railway's redundant rolling stock was donated by the Zillertalbahn railway to the narrow gauge Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway in the UK which has the same gauge of track.
WooWooMad also must thank Phil (our guide) and Michael (our entertainer) for giving encouragement, enthusiasm and permission for the making of this video and their inclusion in it.
Thank you also Michael for the free CD of your music.

Elk jaar worden hier de gelijknamige wereldberoemde ski-wedstrijden gehouden. Nadat we langs een lint van kleine ski-dorpjes zijn gereden stappen we in Jenbach over op de Zillertal-Bahn.
