Ziplining On Santa Catalina Island - SoCal - USA
This is the relatively new ziplining system that incorporates an eco-tour on Santa Catalina Island - SoCal. You take a Hummer H1 (run on bio-fuel) up to the top of the mountainous hills above Avalon Bay, then do the AWESOME, very fast ziplining back down in stages. Much faster than anything I have every done before. The Guides are excellent & very professional although still great fun. Do be aware, I was filming this with a wrist mounted GoPro Hero 3 & I MUST hold on with both hands at the beginning of each zip, so the camera will always be facing up to start with & at the end. After a few zips, one of the guides said I could come in with one hand so I could keep the camera facing forward. He said he could see was handling the kit fine & had good control over it. On the last couple of zips they asked us to scream out as though we were in trouble, as the sound carries right down the canyon & scares the next groups...hence my shouting! We were the first group I think that day. Best fun I have had in ages...I thoroughly recommend it. Two thumbs well up by me! 45 mph speeds, 350 feet above the ground. Long zips for that speed. They are planning on building more! Can't wait!

The exhilarating journey begins at 500 feet above Avalon, at the top of Hog's Back, high in the hills. From there, visitors travel nearly three quarters of a mile over the 3,671-foot zip line. The ride comprises five separate zips with a total elevation drop of 440 feet and speeds reaching 40 to 45 mph.
Riders gather at Descanso Beach Club to pick up their helmets, harnesses and trolley and to receive instructions. From there, a Mercedes Unimog will escort tour takers to the zip line's start high in the hills above Avalon at Hog's Back and the gate into the interior of the Island.
From Hog's Back, zip riders descend through Descanso Canyon, pausing at six eco-station platforms located at varying elevations above sea level along the way. While standing on the specially designed platform, visitors can admire spectacular views of the surrounding Island interior and ocean and read interpretive signage depicting the unique and interesting aspects of Catalina Island, its flora, fauna and history. After two hours of admiring the breathtaking scenery from the bird's-eye view, tour takers come back down to earth at Descanso Beach.

Catalina Island - Avalon
Santa Catalina Island, often called Catalina Island, or just Catalina, is a rocky island off the coast of the U.S. state of California in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. The island is 22 miles (35 km) long and 8 miles (13 km) across at its greatest width. The island is located about 22 miles (35 km) south-southwest of Los Angeles, California. The highest point on the island is 2,097 feet (639 m) Mt. Orizaba. Santa Catalina is part of the Channel Islands of California archipelago and lies within Los Angeles County.
Catalina was originally settled by Native Americans who called the island Pimugna or Pimu and referred to themselves as Pimugnans or Pimuvit. The first Europeans to arrive on Catalina claimed it for the Spanish Empire. Over the years, territorial claims to the island transferred to Mexico and then to the United States. During this time, the island was sporadically used for smuggling, otter hunting, and gold-digging, before successfully being developed into a tourist destination by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. beginning in the 1920s. Since the 1970s, most of the island has been administered by the Catalina Island Conservancy.
Avalon is the only incorporated city on Santa Catalina Island of the California Channel Islands, and the southernmost city in Los Angeles County. The population was 3,728 at the 2010 census.
Before European colonization, the island was inhabited by the Tongva people. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, several different developers tried to develop Avalon into a resort destination community, but most went bankrupt. In 1919, William Wrigley, Jr. gained control of Avalon. Wrigley oversaw much of the development of Avalon, including the construction of the landmark Catalina Casino.
The city remains primarily a resort community. Most of the waterfront is dominated by tourism-oriented businesses. The older parts of the town on the valley floor consist primarily of small houses and two and three-story buildings in various traditional architectural styles. Avalon attracts about 1 million visitors a year and is frequently visited by cruise ships.
