Israel what to see, Zippori National Park
Zippori.
This ancient town is named so because of it being built on a high hill, it has a bird's view of the surrounding area (Zippor in Hebrew means Bird).
# 63 BCE – The town fell to the invading Roman army.
# 55 BCE – Zippori was declared as the 'Capitol of the Galilee'.
# 66 AD – During the 1st Jewish revolt against the Romans, the town was spared from destruction because the inhabitants of Zippori refused to join the rebels and were willing to adopt to the Roman culture.
# 70 AD – The Roman siege of Jerusalem ends with the destruction of the city and the 2nd Temple, the survivors being sold into slavery. The Jewish spiritual center moves to the town of Yavne.
# 135 AD – The 3rd revolt against the Romans (also known as 'The Bar Kokhba revolt') managed to overthrow the Romans, but not for long as they returned two years later with many legions and crushed the Revolt, about 600000 Jews were killed in the war, others died of starvation or were sold as slaves. The land of Judea was devastated to a point of genocide. Remaining Jews from the Galilee and the south who were not allowed to enter Jerusalem made Zippori the new spiritual center for Judaism. It was here that scholars like Rabbi Yehuda Ha-Nasi put to writing the Mishna (the oral traditions of the Jewish people) so that it may never be forgotten.
Jews from this period were buried in caves in the nearby town of 'Beit Shearim' or 'House of Gates'. Today the caves are a National park and can be visited.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Israel what to see, Beit Shearim (House of Gates) National Park
Beit Shearim National Park
# 135 Ad – The 3rd revolt against the Romans went very bad for the Jews of Judea, about 600000 were killed in the land, the survivors either died of hunger or were sold into slavery. Jews were banned from entering the city of Jerusalem in pain of death.
However, the Jews living in Zippori were spared because they did not wish to join the revolt.
The Sanhedrin (Rabbinical court) moved to Zippori making it the center of Jewish learning center. This is where Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi put to writing the Mishna (written collection of oral traditions).
Jews always desired to be buried in Jerusalem but were not allowed to do so by the Romans. So when Rabbi Yehuda died, he was buried at Beit Shearim, not far from Zippori.
Rich Jews from countries nearby who wanted to be buried in the Holy Land, now chose to be buried near the Rabbi's cave.
# In 1936, the catacombs were discovered because of a breach in one of the walls. More than 30 man made burial cave and tunnel systems with hundreds of coffins belong to Jews were found, including that of Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi.
Today, Beit Shearim is a National Park with some of the caves being allowed for visitors to enter.

Along the Jesus Trail in the Holy Land's Galilee Region
St. Jerome (347-420 AD) said, “Five gospels record the life of Jesus; four you will find in books and the one you will find in the Holy Land they: read the fifth gospel and the world of the four will open to you.
One of the best ways to understand Jesus and the Gospels is by visiting the Holy Land. And an even better way is to do it on foot.
The Jesus Trail is a 65-km (40-mi) hiking trail in the Galilee region of Israel that connects sites from the life of Jesus in addition to other historical and religious places. Walking in the Holy Land is an alternative to a busy and crowded bus tour.
The route begins where Jesus was raised in Nazareth and passes through Zippori National Park, Cana, Ilaniya, Kibbutz Lavi, the Horns of Hattin, Nebi Shu’eib, Arbel National Park, Migdal, Ginosar, Tabgha, the Mount of Beatitudes, and finishes in Capernaum -- the town of Jesus -- where Christ lived with the disciples during his three year period of active ministry.
Walk the same rugged terrain and gaze on the beautiful landscapes of the Galilee that Christ himself did. On the Jesus Trail, you will connect in an intimate way with the Life of Christ by walking (literally) in his footsteps.

Israel what to see, ancient Shivta National Park
Shivta was an ancient 1st century Nabatean village and later a Byzantine town in the Israeli Negev Desert. It may have been part of the Nabatean Spice Route and later a stop for Byzantine Christian pilgrims on their way to St Catherine's Monastery in the Sinai Peninsula (part of Egypt.) Amongst the buildings and walls, three Churches can be found. Rain water was collected in large reservoirs as no other sources of water are found nearby. At its time, Byzantine Shivta was a prosperous agricultural town, Grapes were grown for Wine and several presses have been found. The population disappeared between the 7th and 8th century after the Arab's invaded the country. Shivta was only discovered lately and archaeologists digging have found that the inhabitants had left without a battle and that the town was not destroyed as was usually the case. before leaving they blocked the doors and windows with bricks perhaps planning to return someday…they never did.

Sepphoris (Zippori, or birdy) was a major Roman and Byzantine city, the capital and heart of the Galilee province. It included a network of colonnaded paved streets, markets, residential houses, public buildings, bathhouses, theater, synagogues and churches. The richness of its mosaic floors (expanded in another web page), architecture and other findings indicate that the city was wealthy.
It was a major Jewish town at the Byzantine times, and for some time the center of the Jewish administration in the Holy Land.
Late Roman period - the peak
During the early 2nd C AD the city was rebuilt and expanded in a grand Roman plan, as attested by the impressive network of streets (Cardo, Decumanus), public and residential buildings, water works and Theater. The city was wealthy and beautiful, the jewel of the Galilee.
Later, at the beginning of the 3rd C, Sepphoris/Zippori was Jewish ruled once more, and became for some time the seat of the Jewish administration (Sanhedrin). The Mishna, a 2nd C AD books of Jewish practices, was compiled at about 200AD by Yehuda Hannasi, the head of the Sanhedrin and a resident of the city for 17 years. This is a major contribution of Sepphoris and made it famous throughout the Jewish world. Yehuda Hannaasi is buried in Beit Shearim, but his grandson (with the same name) is buried in a grand tomb in the ancient cemetery on the west side of the city.
Byzantine
The city continue to prosper. During the time of Constantine the Great, who adapted Christianity as the Roman's religion, a church was first built in Sepphoris. A number of other churches were built in the Byzantine period, although the majority of its citizens were Jewish. A total of 18 synagogues were referred by Talmudic sources.
In 351 a major rebellion against the Romans was suppressed, but the Romans spared the city once again. However, the city was heavily damaged by nature - a major earthquake (363 AD) hit most of the cities in the Galilee and Israel. It was rebuilt and continued to flourish until the decline in the Arab period (7th C).
Crusaders
The Crusaders rebuilt sections of the city and the fortress, calling it Le Saphorie, preserving the ancient name. On the west side of the hill they built a church, honoring Mary mother of Jesus, who according to tradition was born here to her parents Joachim (a scribe) and Anna (parts of the church still stands there today).
The Crusaders held a major force in the city and used it as a base of their battles with the Arabs. From Le Saphorie the Crusaders armies dispatched their forces to the help of Tiberias against Saladin's Arab forces on the night of July 2, 1187. On the way to Tiberias they were defeated in the battle of Hittim, which signaled the starting of the end of the Crusaders in the Holy Land.
Arab/Ottoman
The Arab town of Suppheriyya preserved the ancient name and existed from the Crusaders times until 1948. In the 18th C, during the Ottoman period, a Bedouin called Daher El-Omar, restored the fortress in 1745 and incorporated some of the ancient stones and sarcophagus that he collected from the ruins.

Zippori, Israel
Zappori (Tsippori) was once the capital of Galilee, and thrived during the Roman and Bysantine periods. It still contains beautiful mosaics, remnants from 65 BCE until 3 CE. It is believed that Mary's parents Joachim and Anne lived here and during the 2nd Century, the Sanhedrin was transferred to the city. The mosaics give a glimpse of a beautiful city from the past.
Израиль.Национальный парк Ципори. Сепфорис / Zippori National Park.Sepphoris

Zippori-The Sanhedrin Trail - Israel Antiquities Authority
The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) is the State Authority that is
responsible for the antiquities of the State of Israel, for their exposure, conservation and research, and for bringing the community close to the rich heritage of the Holy Land. The Education and Community Outreach Department of the IAA carries out a broad spectrum of educational activity, whereby school children, youth and communities take part in archaeological excavations and in a variety of educational initiatives. One of the IAA’s major educational ventures over the past year is ‘the Sanhedrin Trail’.
The approximately 70 km long, Sanhedrin Trail crosses the Lower Galilee from west to east, from Bet She’arim to Tiberias, passing through several ancient sites that are associated with the Sanhedrin, the Jewish Rabbinical Leadership and Court in Roman-period Galilee that was composed of 70 Rabbis. The trail was formally dedicated to the State of Israel, in honor of the State’s 70th birthday, celebrated in May 2018. The trail links the trailers who hike it with the Galilean landscape and its rich cultural heritage, its environment, nature and archaeological and historical sites, and with the many varied cultures that have influenced the region down to the present day.
The creation of the trail was carried out by the active participation of thousands of pupils, youth and volunteers from all backgrounds and from all fields of life, who took part in archaeological excavations, created, prepared and signposted the trail, and developed the archaeological sites along it. Jewish, Moslem, Christian, Bedouin, Druze and Circassian pupils, pre-army groups, students and youth on a pre-university ‘gap-year’ from abroad, worked alongside groups of pensioners, army-disabled volunteers and special needs groups, all experiencing the Sanhedrin Trail by hiking, learning and experiencing. The trail is undergoing continuous development by the exposure of the archaeological sites along the route, and by the significant educational activities carried out along the trail, and the developments will continue in the future.
