SONAMARG TO KARGIL via ZOJILA PASS - DRASS - KARGIL OCT'17 | सोनमर्ग से कारगिल का खतरनाक सड़क
Limetrails continues on the next leg of the mind-blowing Srinagar to Leh drive - Sonamarg to Kargil / सोनमर्ग - कारगिल / सोनमर्ग से कारगिल | A Distance of 123 kms covered in 3 hour 30 minutes, plus a 30 minute stop at the Kargil War Memorial ( कारगिल वार मेमोरियल ) located a few kilometers ahead of Drass. The steep drive up to Zojila Pass on the narrow, dusty, rugged, treacherous dirt track was challenging. As we drove into Drass / द्रास, the 2nd coldest inhabited place in the world, we got a glimpse of what extreme survival is all about. This leg of the drive ended at Kargil where we put up for the night. The last leg of the journey to Leh is covered in the next part. Hope you too enjoy this stretch of the drive as much as we did.

A pilgrimage for every rider. Ladakh is a destination that every traveler has on its list. Bikers eagerly wait for the news of leh manali highway getting open every year. The craze of going ladakh cannot be seized by one and every year more and more tourist check off Ladakh from their bucket list to visit back again. We being our traveler self witnessed all this and carried all the memories in our heart and came back with a promise to show you Ladakh like never before. The series is going to be epic. So gear up everyone because we have arrived with the dream ride,
THE LAND OF HIGH PASSES.
Route: Delhi - Srinagar - Kargil - Leh - Manali - Delhi.
Ladakh (land of high passes) is a region in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir that currently extends from the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram range to the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir and its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture.
Historically, the region included the Baltistan (Baltiyul) valleys (now mostly in Pakistan), the entire upper Indus Valley, the remote Zanskar, Lahaul and Spiti to the south, much of Ngari including the Rudok region and Guge in the east, Aksai Chin in the northeast (extending to the Kun Lun Mountains), and the Nubra Valley to the north over Khardong La in the Ladakh Range. Contemporary Ladakh borders Tibet to the east, the Lahaul and Spiti regions to the south, the Vale of Kashmir, Jammu and Baltiyul regions to the west, and the southwest corner of Xinjiang across the Karakoram Pass in the far north.
Aksai Chin is one of the disputed border areas between China and India. It is administered by China as part of Hotan County but is also claimed by India as a part of the Ladakh region of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1962, China and India fought a brief war over Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh, but in 1993 and 1996 the two countries signed agreements to respect the Line of Actual Control.
In the past Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes, but since the Chinese authorities closed the borders with Tibet and Central Asia in the 1960s, international trade has dwindled except for tourism. Since 1974, the Government of India has successfully encouraged tourism in Ladakh. Since Ladakh is a part of strategically important Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian military maintains a strong presence in the region.
The largest town in Ladakh is Leh, followed by Kargil. The government of Jammu and Kashmir created a separate administrative division from Kashmir division with headquarters on rotational basis 6month(summer) in kargil and 6month in leh(winter) Tibetan Buddhists (39.7%) and Hindus (12.1%) collectively represent the majority of the population while a plurality of Ladakhis (46.4%) are Muslims (mainly Shia). Other religious groups include Sikhs etc. Some activists from Leh have in recent times called for Ladakh to be constituted as a union territory because of perceived unfair treatment by Kashmir and Ladakh's cultural differences with predominantly Muslim Kashmir while people of Kargil oppose UT status for Ladakh.

Zoji La (Ladakhi: ཟོ་ཇི་ ལཱ་; ) is a high mountain pass in Jammu and Kashmir, India, located on the Indian National Highway 1D between Srinagar and Leh in the western section of the Himalayan mountain range. Though often referred to as Zojila Pass in the foreign press, the correct English translation is Zoji Pass or simply Zojila, since the suffix 'La' itself means pass in several Himalayan languages. The usage of the word La can also be seen in the Khardung La, Fotu La, Namika La and Pensi La etc. In modern-day North Indian languages, 'La' (ला) and 'Darra' (दर्रा) are both used interchangeably to mean a mountain pass.
Zoji La is 9 km (5.6 mi) from Sonamarg and provides a vital link between Ladakh and Kashmir Valley. It runs at an elevation of approximately 3,528 metres (11,575 ft), and is the second highest pass after Fotu La on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. It is often closed during winter, though the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to extend traffic to most parts of the year. The Beacon Force unit of the BRO is responsible for clearing and maintenance of the road during Winter.
During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, Zoji La was seized by Pakistani fighters in 1948 in their campaign to capture Ladakh. The pass was captured by Indian forces on 1 November in an assault codenamed Operation Bison, which achieved success primarily due to the surprise use of tanks, then the highest altitude at which tanks had operated in combat in the world.[1]
------
Sonamarg gives rise to The Three Sisters (Kashmir). In its vicinity lies the great Himalayan glaciers of Kashmir Valley namely Kolhoi Glacier and Machoi Glacier with some peaks of above 5000 meters: Sirbal Peak, Kolhoi Peak, Amarnath Peak and Machoi Peak. Sonamarg an alpine valley is situated at the bank of Nallah Sindh, 87 km north-east from Srinagar, it is a popular tourist destination, nestled with in the imposing Himalayan peaks.[1] It lies at an altitude of 2800 metres above sea level. The drive to Sonamarg is through yet another spectacular facet of country side in Kashmir, this time it is the Nallah Sindh, the largest tributary of the Jehlum River in the valley of Kashmir. It is upwards of sixty miles long valley and deep rock-girt gorge to open grassy meadow land and village-dotted slopes.
------
Kashmir is the northernmost geographical region of the Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term Kashmir denoted only the valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. Today, it denotes a larger area that includes the Indian-administered territory of Jammu and Kashmir (subdivided into Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh divisions), the Pakistani-administered territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and Chinese-administered territories of Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract

Stuck at Zojila Pass | Delhi To Leh Ladkah | Day 5 | Incredible India | Beautiful Kashmir
Hi guys today we will have to cross zojila pass and reached kargil before zojila pass entry get closed. So we started our journey from srinagar early in the morning. Going forward we thought of exploring sonamarg, spend some time playing with snow and also saw thajiwas glacier. Our visit to sonamarg was amazing and we really enjoyed a lot and spend some good 3 hours as we have reached on time. After sonamarg we started our journey ahead for kargil but to reach there we need to cross world most dangerous roads of Zojila pass. We got stucked for 2 hours there as one big truck got stuck in ice hole and was not able to move ahead. Some kashmiri people travelling helped the truck to get out of ice hole and we started our journey ahead for kargil. Crossing zojila was tough though because we cannot drive fast because of worst roads. Somehow we crossed zojila and reached drass which was again very coldest temp there was -12 degrees. Drass also had bad roads with ice stick on roads so we need to be very careful while driving. As soon as we crossed drass BRO (Broder Road Organisation) Project roads start and the it just took us few hours to reach kargil as roads after drass was one of the best to drive in India. After reaching kargil we searched for a hotel and stayed over night there. Next day morning we need to confirm the zojila pass closing date as it can snow fall anytime and zojila will be closed. As local drivers said it will be open till another 5 days. Then we finally decided to go ahead till leh and explore the beauty. Watch our next video for more Updates.

Zojila pass -Must drive once in lifetime
Zojila pass
Old zojila pass route drive. Enroute to leh we got stuck on road to zojila pass because of landslide so we turned back and took old zojila route which is more steep with narrow width. That road is fully driveable but most of the times only light vehicals coming down from zojila is allowed and no loaded vehicals allowed on that route. So we took old zojila route and it was fun driving on that old zojila route in slush
