Adorable miniscule monkey welcomed to London Zoo
Subscribe here:
London Zoo has welcomed its newest and tiniest arrival, an adorable miniscule monkey. The black-capped squirrel monkey baby was born in the middle of the night just under three weeks ago, with zoo keepers discovering the tiny bundle clinging tightly on to its mum during their morning rounds. The little thing, which currently measures just three inches tall, was born after a six -month gestation period in the Zoo’s Meet the Monkeys exhibit, where there are no barriers between visitors and the animals. The monkey baby hasn’t yet left the comfort of its mum’s back for zoo staff to tell if it’s a boy or girl, but it is said to be doing well. Squirrel monkeys are said to live in large troops and the zoo now has a group of 20 who are all enjoying fussing over the baby. Report by Claire Lomas.

Italy/Seychelles - Costa Concordia and Allegra
On January 14th 2012 three bodies were recovered from the sea after a luxury cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, late on January 13th, sending water pouring in through a 160-foot (50-metre) gash in the hull, and forcing the evacuation of some 4,200 people from the listing vessel early on January 14th, said a member of the Italian Coast Guard.
There were reports that three other people had died after the accident which occurred late on Friday night January 13th near the tiny Tuscan island of Giglio, but those reports were not yet confirmed, said Coast Guard Commander Francesco Paolillo.
Helicopters plucked to safety some 50 people who were trapped on the ship, the Costa Concordia, after the liner listed so badly they couldn't launch lifeboats, Paolillo told The Associated Press in Rome by telephone from his command in the Tuscan port city of Livorno.
The ship was on an eight-day pleasure cruise around Mediterranean ports.
When the ship ran aground the passengers were instructed to put on life jackets and take to the life rafts but witnesses said they couldn't get into the boats, because the cruise liner was tilting so much the boats couldn't be lowered into the cold, night sea.
The passengers were eventually rescued by one of several boats in the area that came to their aid.
As dawn approached, a painstaking search of the 290-metre (950-foot) long ship's interior was being conducted to see if anyone might be left trapped inside, Paolillo said.
Some 30 people were reported injured, most of them suffering only bruises, but at least two people were reported in grave condition.
The evacuees were taking refuge in schools, hotels, and a church on the tiny island of Giglio, a popular vacation isle about 18 miles (25 kilometres) off Italy's central west coast.
Those evacuated by helicopter were flown to Grosseto, while others, rescued by local ferries pressed into emergency service, took survivors to the port of Porto Santo Stefano on the nearby mainland.
Paolillo said the exact circumstances of the accident were still unclear, but that the first alarm went off about 10:30 p.m local time (9.30pm GMT) on January 13th, about three hours after the Costa Concordia had begun its voyage from the port of Civitavecchia, en route to its first port of call, Savona, in northwestern Italy.
Paolillo said the vessel hit an obstacle, but it wasn't clear if it might have hit a rocky reef in the waters off Giglio.
The Costa Concordia was believed to have set sail with 3,206 passengers and 1,023 crew members.

Daylight on January 14th revealed the huge hulk of the stricken luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia, as it lay on its side on rocks off the Italian island of Giglo.
