Our animated historical documentary series on the Ottoman history continues with the famous siege of Szigetvar of 1566, during which the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I fought against the Hungarian-Croatian army under Nikola Zrinski. This was another page in the Ottoman-Habsburg conflict and the final campaign of the Sultan Suleiman.

Szigetvári vár és környéke (Castle of Szigetvar in Hungary)
A Szigetvári vár alapjait a XIV. sz. végén kezdték építeni. A kör alakú, magas öregtoronyból évszázadok során alakult ki Szigetvár erődítmény-rendszere. Jelenlegi formáját többszöri felújítással, a XIX. sz. végére érte el. A magyar történelembe 1566-ban írta be magát, amikor is Szulejmán szultán hatalmas sereggel indult Bécs ellen. Az akkori várkapitány, Zrinyi Miklós 2500 katonájával megállította a török sereget. A maroknyi sereg azonban nem bírta az ostromsorozatot, és először a külső várat, majd a belsőt is kénytelen voltak feladni. Zrínyi Miklós és katonái hősi halált haltak, de itt lelte halálát Szulejmán szultán is. A mai turbéki templom alá temették el Szulejmán szultán belső részeit. A várban láthatjuk Zrínyi Miklós lovasszobrát, Istvánffy Miklós mellszobrát, a Vármúzeumot, és Szulejmán Dzsámiját (utóbbit a vár elfoglalása után a törökök 3 hét alatt építették a szultán tiszteletére). A vár elfoglalása után 123 évig lengett török zászló a falon.

The town's fortress was the setting of the Battle of Szigetvár in 1566. It was a sanjak centre at first in Budin Province (1566–1601), later in Kanije Province (1601–1689).
The former Andrássy Palace is next to them. Some other monuments in the town date back to Turkish times. Two years after the siege, the mosque of Ali Pasha was built, later - in 1788 - to be transformed into a Christian church: the Roman Catholic parish church. The two minarets, as well as the windows and niches with ogee arches indicate its original function. The Turkish House of red raw brick walls and interlaced steel window grills in Bástya Street was originally destined to be a caravanserai. The two holy-water basins of the Franciscan Church were made of Turkish washbasins. The carved main altar of the Baroque Church is another sight to see. In 1966, on the 400th anniversary of the siege, Szigetvár regained its old rank of a chartered ancient city. Development began to gather speed. Today it has a population of 12,000. In October 2011, the city received the title Civitas Invicta from the Hungarian Parliament. /Wikipedia/

The battle that saved civilization - A Tribute to Nikola Šubić Zrinski / Zrínyi Miklós
A 19th cenutry opera dedicated to the Battle of Szigeth, and the commander of the garrison Nikola Šubić Zrinski, Croatian noble and Ban of Croatia, a national hero of Hungary and Croatia.
The fortress of Szigeth, with 3000 Croats and Hungarians garrisoned, faced the Ottoman besieging army of around 100 000.
The final battle began on 7 September of 1566. By this time, the fortress walls had been reduced to rubble. In the morning an all-out attack began. Soon the castle, the last stronghold within Szigetvár, was set ablaze and cinders fell into the apartments of the count. The Ottoman army swarmed through the city, drumming and yelling. Zrinski prepared for a last charge addressing his troops:
“ ...Let us go out from this burning place into the open and stand up to our enemies. Who dies – he will be with God. Who dies not – his name will be honoured. I will go first, and what I do, you do. And God is my witness – I will never leave you, my brothers and knights!... ”
As the Turks were pressing forwards along a narrow bridge the defenders suddenly flung open the gate and fired a large mortar loaded with broken iron, killing 600 attackers. Zrinski then ordered a charge and led his remaining 600 troops out of the castle. He received two musket wounds in his chest and was killed shortly afterwards by an arrow to the head.
The importance of the battle was considered so great that the French clergyman and statesman Cardinal Richelieu was reported to have described it as the battle that saved civilization.“

Zrinyi Festival in Szigetvar
450th anniversary of battle of Szigetvar
(7 Sep 2016) Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Veysi Kaynak has thanked the Hungarian government for their solidarity following July's failed coup.
At an event on Wednesday, marking the 450th anniversary of the Siege of Szigetvar, Kaynak said that the Hungarian government's immediate reaction after the failed coup showed the trust in our stability, our democracy and economic power.
He also jointly opened the Turkish-Hungarian Friendship Park in Szigetvar, south-west Hungary. The Croatian and Hungarian presidents Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and Janos Ader, also attended.
In 1566 Szigetvar Castle was defended by 2,500 men against Suleiman's 150,000 strong army.
Until his death at age 71, Suleiman was the Ottoman Empire's longest-ruling sultan. The Turks greatly expanded their dominance in the Balkans, the Middle East and northern Africa during his 46-year reign.
Suleiman died in his tent a couple of days before the end of the siege, considered a pyrrhic victory for the Turks, as it effectively delayed their attempt to reach Vienna by over a century.

A település területe már a történelem előtti időkben is lakott hely. Kelta, római, majd avar uralom után a környék Botond törzse alá kerül.
A hely első védett épületét az Almás-patak mocsaras árteréből kiálló, szigetszerű földsávon építették meg. A sziget egykori birtokosai magukat „Szigethi néven említik, a vár alapítójának a család egyik tagját, Anthemius-t tartják. Ennek unokája, Szigethi Oswald építtette az első erősséget, a kör alakú, háromemeletes lakótornyot. Ez képezte a későbbi belső vár magját. A sziget körüli mocsaras tavat idővel kimélyítették és földsáncokkal körültöltötték. A várat előbb a Garayak, majd enyingi Török Bálint birtokolta, kinek udvarában élt 1541-ig Tinódi (1542-ig [5] ). 1543-ban Ferdinánd király tulajdonába került. 15. századi okmányok a városról, mint oppidumról szólnak, feltehető, a téglalaprajzú város ekkor már körülkerített, védett hely volt.

A török támadások ellensúlyozására a várat és a várost megerősítik: 1548-1549-ben kiszélesítik a vár körüli tavat, megerősítik a sáncokat, megépítik a négyszögalaprajzú vár sarkain a földbástyákat, az északnyugatit már kőből készítik. A vár középpontjában a belső vár, a középkori nagy lakótorony állt, a belső vár kijáratát földsánc védte. Tömésfalból készítették a vár falait és szabálytalan alaprajzú bástyáit.
Az Óvárost vert cölöpsor és széles vizesárok vette körül, a várral cölöphíd kötötte össze. A várost 6--7 m magas, sarokbástyákkal erősített tömésfalakkal védték. A megerősített Szigetvárt 1556-ban Ali budai pasa ostromolta, de csak a felperzselt Óvárost sikerült bevennie. 1558-ban kezdődött a vár nagyszabású megerősítése. Zrínyi Miklós várkapitánysága idején (1561-1566) alapították az Újvárost is. Az 1566-os ostrom idején pusztult el középkori kerek torony. A vár bevétele után a török azonnal megkezdte Szigetvár újjáépítését. Előbb a várat erősítik, majd a város középületeit építik meg. A város a török uralom alatt előbb a budai majd a kanizsai vilájet alá rendelt szandzsák központja volt.[6]
1689-ben foglalják vissza a várat, a török elvonulása után a Vár és az Óváros teljes épségben jut a császáriak kezére. Ekkor építik ki az északi várfal kazamatarendszerét. Az Újváros 1686-ban porig égett.
Az első világháborút követően szerb megszállás alá kerül, a Baranya--bajai Szerb--Magyar Köztársaság része; a trianoni békeszerződés értelmében Magyarországhoz csatolják.
A település az 1950-es megyerendezésig Somogy vármegyéhez tartozott, ekkor csatolták át a Szigetvári járás részeként Baranya megyéhez. Városi rangot 1966-ban kapott.

After planning on going here for years I finally went. The fortress was quiet and the cold wind and fresh snow only added hallowed feeling of this place.
