ZUGDIDI AND DADIANI PALACES MUSEUM. ГОРОД ЗУГДИДИ.
Zugdidi (Georgian: ზუგდიდი; Mingrelian: ზუგდიდი or ზუგიდი) is a city in the Western Georgian historical province of Samegrelo (Mingrelia). It is situated in the north-west of that province. The city is located 318 kilometres west of Tbilisi, 30 km from the Black Sea coast and 30 km from the Egrisi Range, at an elevation of 100–110 metres above sea level. Zugdidi is the capital of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, which combines Samegrelo (Mingrelia) and upper part of Svaneti, and the center of the Zugdidi Municipality within.
The city serves as a residence of Metropolitan of Zugdidi and Tsaishi Eparchy of the Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

GEORGIA:ZUGDIDI:ETHNIC GEORGIANS FLEE BREAKAWAY REPUBLIC ABKHAZIA
Russian/Eng/Nat
More and more of Abkhazia's ethnic Georgians are streaming into Georgia, despite the protection of Russian peacekeeping troops in the breakaway region.
The influx of refugees is foiling United Nation plans to start repatriating some of the 250- thousand people forced to flee their homes after a bloody civil war in 1993.
The refugees prefer to suffer squalid conditions in camps across the border in Georgia rather than risk attacks from Abkhazia separatists back home.
Another group of ethnic Georgians walk across the Georgian border from Abkhazia, under the watchful gaze of Russian peacekeeping forces.
But these Georgians are not returning home - they are fleeing their villages in Abkhazia.
Despite the presence of UN forces, armed Abkhazia units continue to attack ethnic Georgians at will.
These refugees will join thousands of other Georgians who fled the fierce fighting over control of the breakaway region two years ago.
They are all living in the town of Zugdidi, just over the border.
Hospitals, schools - even barns and disused stables - have been turned into makeshift homes as housing is scarce.
Here 57 refugees from twelve families live in cold, cramped conditions.
They claim they receive little help from the aid agencies.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian )
We very rarely get help. We haven't had any for months. We are barely getting by
SUPER CAPTION: Nana Rhatuna, Refugee
And the appalling living conditions have led to a whole variety of health problems for the refugees
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Many of those things will be skin diseases. Lots of scabies and lice on children and adults. Other things are rat bites. A lot of rats are running around these buildings biting children etc
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Mangham, Regional Director Oxfam
Over 250-thousand Georgians fled the breakaway republic in 1993 but only 300 or so have thus far returned under official auspices.
After tacitly backing the Abkhazian separatists, Russia switched sides in return for Georgia joining the CIS.
Although Russia installed peacekeepers in the region in an attempt to ensure the safe return of ethnic Georgians, few are prepared to go back to the scene of so much personal suffering.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
They've seen relatives shot and murdered, they've seen their houses destroyed, their property taken and now they're living in these overcrowded conditions and the psychological effect on these people is quite profound
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Mangham, Regional Director Oxfam
And those waiting for the chance to go back are beginning to lose hope of ever seeing their homes again.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I don't think we'll return. I have no hope. If we could have gone back I'd already have gone. I don't think I will
SUPER CAPTION: Nana Gagua, Refugee
The road sign says it's only 97 kilometers back home to Sukhumi but it is unlikely that any of these people will be making the short trek in the near future.

svaneti winter drive from zugdidi to mestia timelapse
As I was going on a skiing holiday in Svaneti as soon as I went in to Zugdidi i started filming a timelapse film from Zugdidi where the snow starts to Mestia. There were a few meters of snow in the upper part of Svaneti Georgia the highway got covered in snow and we had to use snow chains. Sometimes we had to stop because cars in front without chains where getting stuck. Also I added some of my Ableton music. Hope you enjoyed this video. Please like and subscribe.

Zugdidi, Mestia, Georgia | Upper Svaneti | Hiking in Georgia (E1)
#Georgia #Hiking
We travelled to Mestia, a beautiful village hidden between the huge Caucasus mountains in the upper Svaneti. We meet up with some Svans at Zugdidi who happily hosts us. This was the first time that I hiked in the snow.

STORYLINE
Explosions were heard near the key Georgian city of Gori on Thursday, as plans for Russian troops to leave the city appear to have broken down.
In Moscow, Russia's foreign minister declared the world can forget about any talk about Georgia's territorial integrity.
The declaration from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov came simultaneously with the announcement that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was meeting in the Kremlin with the leaders of Georgia's two separatist provinces, South Ossetia and Abkhazia - a clear sign Moscow could absorb the regions.
The Georgian soldiers said they were awaiting further orders.
