Antwerp: The Liefkenshoek rail link – a Passage for Europe.
The statistics for the port of Antwerp are impressive: 38 ocean going vessels call at the port each day. These ships are serviced by 132 barges, 250 trains and literally thousands of trucks. The port’s hinterland extends deep into the continent- Sweden in the north to Italy and Greece in the south. The port now encompasses over 7,000 square km on the right bank of the river Schelde, and 5,000 of new construction of the left. Rail infrastructure has grown with the port – Antwerp Noord yard is the second largest in Europe. The rapidly growing left bank had been difficult to access by rail until 2015 when the largest rail infrastructure project since the completion of the high-speed network was put into service. The new line – the Liefkenshoek rail link – is a 16km double track electrified railway linking the new complexes west of the river with Noord classification yard. This, together with new freight yards and links to the mainlines has substantially cut wagon handling time, and helped B-Logistics launch new services to its hinterland. We look at the new link, the yards and the routes away from the port.

New South is a housing development in the south of Antwerp overlooking the River Schelde. Since the trans-shipment activities departed from the port in the 60s it was a deserted area. The opening of the new Palace of Justice and the renovation of the former customs house by the Bank of Breda in 2006 were the first momentum to the development of the site. Since spring 2010, the private developer Triple Living owns much of the land of New South. With approximately 2,000 new homes, new features and a large park New South is to anticipate the current shortage of green and public facilities in the area, and the expected population growth in the next 15 years. The development is built in phases from north to south, so that the first parts getting ready are the ones being just next to the city. The full realization of New South will take at least 15 years.
ZOA's mission was to create a moving picture about the awakening of this deserted area. The architectural details and the vast amount of green were a joyful playground we used to test our virtual skills at. The storyboard was created by carefully choosing the best pictures that make up the atmosphere of dawn. Emphasizing by avoiding being kitchy – that was our attempt for a dance on the razor’s edge.

Antwerpen-Centraal is the name of the main train station in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The station is operated by the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS).
The original station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905 as a replacement for the original terminus of the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp Railway. The stone clad terminus buildings, with a vast dome above the waiting room hall were designed by Louis Delacenserie. The viaduct into the station is also a notable structure designed by local architect Jan Van Asperen. A plaque on the north wall bears the name Middenstatie.
The station is now widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium, although the extraordinary eclecticism of the influences on Delacenserie's design had led to a difficulty in assigning it to a particular architectural style. In W. G. Sebald's novel Austerlitz an ability to appreciate the full range of the styles that might have influenced Delacensiere is used to demonstrate the brilliance of the fictional architectural historian who is the novel's protagonist.
In 2009 the American magazine Newsweek judged Antwerpen-Centraal the world's fourth greatest train station. In 2014 the British-American magazine Mashable awarded Antwerpen-Centraal the first place for the most beautiful railway station in the world.
Train hall
The originally iron and glass train hall was designed by Clément Van Bogaert, an engineer, and covers an area of 12,000 square metres. The height of the station was once necessary for the smoke of steam locomotives. The roof of the train hall was originally made of steel.
World War II damage and restoration
During World War II, severe damage was inflicted to the train hall by the impact of V-2 bombs, without destroying the structural stability of the building, according to the National Railway Company of Belgium. Nevertheless, it has been claimed that the warping of the substructure due to a V-2 bomb had caused constructional stresses.
The impact of the bombs are still visible due to a lasting wave-distortion in the roofing of the hall.
In the mid-twentieth century, the building's condition had deteriorated so far that its demolition was being considered. The station was closed on 31 January 1986 for safety reasons, after which restoration work to the roof (starting at the end of March 1986 and finishing in September 1986) and façades was performed.
The stress problems due to the impact of bombs during the war was reportedly solved by the use of polycarbonate sheets instead of glass, due to its elasticity and its relatively low weight (40% less than glass), which avoided the need for extra supporting pillars.
After replacing or repairing steel elements, they were painted burgundy. Copper was also used during the renovation process of the roof.
Expansion for high-speed trains
In 1998 large-scale reconstruction work began to convert the station from a terminus to a through station. A new tunnel has been excavated between Berchem station in the south of the city and Antwerpen-Dam station in the north, passing under Central station, with platforms on two underground levels. This allows Thalys, HSL 4 and HSL-Zuid high-speed trains to travel through Antwerp Central without the need to turn around.
The major elements of the construction project were completed in 2007, and the first through trains ran on 25 March 2007.
This complete project has cost approximately €1.6 billion.
The station was awarded a Grand Prix at the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards in 2011.
Station layout
The station has four levels and 14 tracks arranged as follows:
Level +1: The original station, 6 terminating tracks, arranged as two groups of three and separated by a central opening allowing views of the lower levels
Level 0: Houses ticketing facilities and commercial space
Level −1: 7 m below street level, 4 terminating tracks, arranged in two pairs, also featuring the world-famous twin level escalators that start off at a gradient, then become level, then resume a gradient again.
Level −2: 18 m below street level, 4 through tracks, leading to the two tracks of the tunnel under the city (used by high-speed trains and fast domestic InterCity services).

Passenger and Freight Trains in Brussels, Antwerp & Liège, Belgium
A collection of shots I took of passenger and freight trains while I was visiting Belgium. Shots are featured in Brussels, Antwerp and Liège.
0:00 - 8:55, here I was at Bruxelles-Schuman station where we see mostly electric multiple units arriving and departing the station.
8:55 - 11:06, here we visit Mechelen station where we see our first freight train passing as well as a loco hauled passenger train.
11:06 - 11:39, next we visit Lier station where we see two electric locos double headed on a mixed freight, this was my last freight train I got while I was in Belgium.
11:39 - 15:33, next we visit the beautiful Antwerp Central Station, it was just a brief visit so I never got many shots while I was there but there are a couple of catches.
15:33 - 26:11, next we visit Bruxelles Central (Brussels Central Station) where we see plenty of action including plenty of loco hauled trains and some electric multiple units.
26:11 - 28:28, next we make a brief visit to Liège, again like Antwerp I wasn't able to get many shots as I was changing trains there so I only managed to catch a handful of stuff.
28:28 - 36:42, and finally our last location is Gare de Bruxelles-Nord (Brussels North Station) where we see plenty of action around the station, plenty of loco hauled trains as well as the odd electric multiple units.
Footage was taken on the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th of August 2017.
