Impression West Lake Show in Hangzhou, China
One of the highlights when visiting Hangzhou, China is seeing the Impression West Lake show. This aquatic tableau was one of the most sensational live performances I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying a lot given how many I’ve attended. 다음은 중국 술의 대명사 마오타이주의 산지로 간다. 마오타이주는 이 마을 이름에서 유래됐다. 언덕 위에 솟은 마오타이 술병 모형을 보니 마오타이에 온 실감이 난다. 마을에 위치한 중국 술 박물관. 그 앞 뜰에 한 무제 동상이 서 있다. 사마천의 사기에 한 무제가 마오타이에서 진상한 술을 맛보았다는 기록이 전해진다. 박물관 내부는 중국 술의 역사와 문화를 살펴볼 수 있게 꾸며져 있다. 발굴된 술병과 잔들이 출토 당시의 모습으로 전시되어 있다. 놀라운 것은 옛스런 청동기 술병 안에서 액체, 그러니까 술이 발견됐다는 것이다. 저 액체가 2천년 전의 술이라니 신기할 따름이다. “마오타이주는 세계 3대 증류주의 하나입니다. 유구한 역사 문화를 가지고 있지요. 2,000여 년 전에 오늘날 마오타이에서 생산하는 치우장주를 한무제에서 진상하여 ‘최고의 술’ 이라는 찬사를 받았습니다. 이렇게 오래된 취장주는 바로 마이타이주의 전신입니다.” 전시관에는 중국 55개 소수민족과 세계박람회 출품을 기념하는 술병들이 전시돼있다. 오색 색동으로 장식된 조선족 상징 술병, 대전엑스포의 한빛탑을 형상화한 술병이 반갑다. 마오타이주는 세계박람회 출품을 계기로 세계적 명성을 날리게 된다. 여기에는 아주 특별하고 재미있는 에피소드가 전해진다. 그 특별한 사건은 1915년 샌프란시스코 박람회에서 일어났다. “1915년에 청이와 롱허 두 업체 브랜드의 마오타이주는 품질이 우수하고 이름난 특산품으로 미국 샌프란시스코로 보내졌습니다. 박람회에서 짙은 갈색의 도자기 안에 들어 있던 마오타이주는 심사위원들의 관심을 받지 못하고 박람회가 끝날 때까지 아무도 관심을 두지 않았습니다. 마지막에 중국 대표 한 분이 실수로 위장하여 마오타이주를 바닥에 떨어트려 깨뜨렸어요. 떨어진 마오타이주의 향기가 심사위원을 마침내 매료시켜 최종에는 금상을 획득했습니다. 프랑스 코냑 브랜드와 영국의 스코틀랜드 위스키와 함께 세계 3대의 명주가 되었습니다.” 이 검고 칙칙한 자기에 담겨있던 마오타이주는 한 중국대표의 기지로 세계에 알려지게 된 것이다.
