Japanese BBQ + Black Sulfur Egg TASTING at Owakundani Valley | Hakone, Japan
My 12-day trip through Japan in January of 2019 was one of the most magical travel experiences I ever had. I visited stunning historical and cultural marvels, explored three of the country’s biggest cities, toured beautiful natural wonders, and met lots of amazing new friends along the way! Come join me on my latest Japanese adventure!
My next Japanese adventure began at the Owakundani Valley in Hakone, Japan. This is a volcanic area that is known for their sulfuric hot springs. They’re famous for their black eggs, which I couldn’t wait to try!
The eggs here turn black when they’re cooked in the sulfuric hot springs. You can get 5 for 500 Yen, or roughly $4.50 U.S. They say if you eat one of these eggs, you’ll add seven years to your life!
They give you a little bit of salt to sprinkle on the eggs. They were actually really delicious!
In addition to the eggs, there’s also a huge souvenir shop where you can buy things like chocolate, sake, golden cats, and lots of other items.
Our next stop was the Hakone Open-Air Museum, which boasts grounds encompassing 70,000 square meters and over a thousand sculptures and works of art by artists from all over the world, including Picasso, who has an entire exhibition hall dedicated to his work.
The museum is beautiful! There are so many incredible sculptures and fascinating exhibits. There’s also an area that’s popular with kids, including a net they can climb! There’s also a maze that reminded me of the one from Harry Potter!
There’s also a heated foot bath, which was so relaxing. Afterward, my feet felt great! I had been walking on them for days!
If you love art, you have to go to the Hakone Open-Air Museum! It’s a must-visit!
Then it was time to go to our hotel, the Hakone Kowakidani Onsen Mizunooto, and get some dinner. My room was an amazing mix of Western and Japanese accommodations. It had Japanese-style flooring and a little table as well as two twin beds and a small kitchen. The bathroom was really nice, with a separated and high-tech toilet. They also give you traditional robes to wear for dinner, which I love!
After I got dressed, I went to the restaurant, which had tables with grills set into them. You grill your fish and meat to your liking. I started with a dry sake along with a mixed appetizer plate that contained blowfish skin, tofu, crab, bean, lotus flower, and more.
The tofu with soybean was really tasty and the salad with blowfish skin was like a refreshing coleslaw. There was a crispy crab biscuit and the chicken with poppyseed had a nice texture. The fish cake with salmon was chewy and I loved the monkfish liver. The dried persimmon with cheese looked like a dessert, and the fried lotus flower was super crunchy and felt like tempura.
Next was four types of sashimi with a miso glaze and some sake. The salmon with seaweed went great with the miso mustard, which was similar to a honey mustard. Then I had some sebring, which was incredible with the soy sauce and wasabi I’d mixed together. There was another seabring with a strong herb and carrots. Then I went with the yellowtail!
Then it was time for the things to grill: beef, fish, scallops, shrimp, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and mushrooms. I went with some cod and yam. The yam was like a mashed potato and the cod, or bacalao, was one of my favorites!
First up was grilled trout, which was like butter with the soy sauce. The scallop was also very nice. The Brussels spouts were super fresh and tasty with only salt and pepper. After that, I went with the spring onion and shrimp.
Next was the wagyu beef and duck, which had some nice fat on it. The duck was a bit too rare, but the fat was very nice and the beef was ridiculously good! The salmon roe with gelatin was also incredible and the mushrooms were nice and moist!
The dried sweet potato was incredible and the pork was outstanding. Then I went with some mackerel, more wagyu beef, and sticky sebring rice with herbs and a spicy glaze. The rice was pretty fishy and a little burnt, but nice.
Then, for dessert, we had a type of Jell-O with citrus that was almost like a crème brulee or flan. It was an amazing dinner all around!
I hope you enjoyed coming along for my epic day in Hakone! If you did, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment, and subscribe to my channel!

The Art Deco Glamour of Shanghai
Contemporary Shanghai is celebrated for its futuristic skyline, but nestled between shiny towers, you’ll find one of the world’s richest collections of Art Deco buildings. The architectural style, which had its heyday in the 1930s, epitomized luxury and employed geometric forms, linear shapes and narrow windows. Not to be missed are the Grand Theatre and the Paramount, once bastions of Shanghai glitz and glam.

15 Things to Do Near Tokyo, Japan - Visiting Yamanashi, Shizuoka & Kanagawa Prefectures
Kamakura
Kamakura is a city located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, about 50 kilometres south-south-west of Tokyo. Although Kamakura proper is today rather small, it is often described in history books as a former de facto capital of Japan as the seat of the Shogunate and of the Regency during the Kamakura Period. Kamakura was designated as a city on November 3, 1939. Kamakura has a beach which, in combination with its temples and proximity to Tokyo, makes it a popular tourist destination.
Kamakura has many historically significant Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, some of them, like Sugimotodera, over 1,200 years old. Kotokuin, with its monumental outdoor bronze statue of Amida Buddha, is the most famous. A 15th century tsunami destroyed the temple that once housed the Great Buddha, but the statue survived and has remained outdoors ever since. This iconic Daibutsu is arguably amongst the few images which have come to represent Japan in the world's collective imagination. Kamakura also hosts the so-called Five Great Zen Temples (the Kamakura Gozan).
The architectural heritage of Kamakura is almost unmatched, and the city has proposed some of its historic sites for inclusion in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list. It must be remembered, however, that much of the city was devastated in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and that many temples and shrines, however founded centuries ago, are physically just careful replicas.

Japan's PM dismisses idea of building alternative war shrine
Japanese Prime Minister Shizo Abe has dismissed outright suggestions Japan
might want to consider building a new shrine to honor the country's war
dead... following the international controversy surrounding his recent trip to the
Yasukuni war shrine.
In a party questioning session this week, Abe said other countries' comments
regarding a possible replacement for the Yasukuni shrine would not be taken
into consideration.
Abe added that paying homage to a country's war dead is a necessary act as
state leader.
Japan's neighbors, including Korea and China, condemned Abe's visit last
month to the Yasukuni shrine, which honors several convicted Class-A war
criminals.
Michelin Star Sushi vs Traditional Sushi | Tokyo Sushi Restaurants
Some of Tokyo's best high-end sushi restaurants that have excellent quality at a fair price. Since the reservations and wait for the 3 michelin star Sukiyabashi Jiro Sushi restaurant can be more than months or years, I thought I could give you some alternative restaurants that deliver when it comes to omakase sushi!
This time I was able to try sushi from Sushi Kimura, a michelin 2 star sushi restaurant.
What's different about Kimura’s sushi compared to the other 20 michelin starred sushi restaurants in Tokyo, is that he serves aged fish sushi. More than 90% of the michelin starred sushi restaurants serve edomae sushi which consists of the traditional raw fish.
I was also able to try sushi from Sushi Namba, a small 12 seater sushi shop located in the local suburbs of Tokyo and has run purely by word of mouth for 50 years. (This time I had permission to film and share his work with you here :D)
Having both the chef's prepare the sushi right in front of me, and seeing how concentrated, passionate and serious they were about sushi was truly inspiring.
Hope you guys enjoy the video and the sushi experience :)

TINY Japanese APARTMENT TOUR Near Ueno Station | Tokyo, Japan
In January of 2019, I had the amazing opportunity to spend twelve days exploring and filming the Asian island nation of Japan. It’s something I’d always wanted to do and I’m so glad I finally got the chance, because everything about this country blew my mind and I can’t wait to share it all with you!

In-between going on street food tours, I decided to give you guys a tour of the Tokyo Airbnb where I spent two days after staying at the Hyatt Regency. It’s in the Ueno neighborhood in central Tokyo and really close to Ueno Station, one of the largest train stations in the city. I teamed back up with my buddy Shinichi from TabiEats, who helped me film! Come along with us as we tour my apartment and go on a mini-adventure afterward!
My Film Making Kit ►
My studio apartment was at the top of a long and steep flight of stairs. Just enter the code on the lock, insert the key, and you’re in! It’s important to take off your shoes when you enter an apartment in Japan, so my host supplied some slippers near the door.
My bathroom was tight but futuristic, with a luxurious toilet with a bidet and various settings and a small shower. The studio also had a kitchenette where you can cook some meals, along with some cabinets, shelves, a hot plate, and a dishwasher. The shelves had some cups and pans to cook with.
The main room had two twin beds, a TV, a small couch that was very low to the floor, a closet with some extra pillows, and a coat rack. On a small table, there was a rice cooker, a water boiler, and a microwave. My windows looked out at a neighboring building.
All in all, the apartment is small, but efficient. It had everything I needed and was close to Ueno station, a nearby park and zoo, Asakusa, the Akihabara area, and more. I really liked it, even though it was kind of hard to find, even with the directions provided by my Airbnb host. According to Shinichi, Tokyo has no street names, so it makes getting around a challenge sometimes.
After the tour, Shinichi and I decided to head to a convenience store and get some sake! We found a FamilyMart and targeted the alcohol section, where we found a variety of beers, a Japanese alcoholic drink called chūhai, whiskeys, and more. But I was here for sake, so we bought a bottle and then headed to Tokyo Metropolitan Ueno Park.
It turns out there’s a lot to do in the park! In addition to containing a zoo, there are also several museums, including the National Museum and the Museum of Natural History, as well as a Shinto shrine called Hanazono Inari and a pond with row boats.
After walking through the park and under some torii gates, we found some seats near the pond and opened our sake! It was only Shinichi’s fourth time having it, while I’d probably had some a few hundred times in my life! It was really nice and super dry, and not fruity at all. It was super smooth and pretty strong, but since we were sharing it, it was nothing.
I hope you enjoyed watching my Japanese apartment tour! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already. I will see you in the next travel food adventure!

Hinamatsuri traces its origins to a Heian period custom called hina-nagashi (雛流しdoll floating) in which straw hina dolls are set afloat on a boat and sent down a river to the sea, supposedly taking troubles or bad spirits with them. The Shimogamo Shrine (part of the Kamo Shrine complex in Kyoto) celebrates the Nagashi-bina by floating these dolls between the Takano and Kamo Rivers to pray for the safety of children. People have stopped doing this now because of fishermen catching the dolls in their nets. They now send them out to sea, and when the spectators are gone they take the boats out of the water and bring them back to the temple and burn them.
The customary drink for the festival is shirozake, a sake made from fermented rice.
