Five Delaware state museums achieve national accreditation
The sites join Hagley Museum and Winterthur as the only accredited museums in Delaware.
After a year of self-study plus site visits by peer reviewers, Five Delaware state museums have been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The newly accredited sites are John Dickinson Plantation ear Kitts Hummock, the Johnson Victrola Museum and Old State House in Dover, the New Castle Court House Museum, and the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes.
We now count ourselves among that elite company along with many other museums across the United States, said Tim Slavin, director of the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs. [Nationally], there are 33,000 museums, roughly a little more than 1,000 or 3 percent have achieved this accreditation and it's a wonderful tribute to all of my colleagues.
Museum officials gathered at the New Castle Court House Museum to celebrate the recognition which state leaders hope will encourage residents and travelers to make plans to visit one or all of the sites.

Description: Delaware is one of the 50 states of the United States, in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeastern region. It is bordered to the south and west by Maryland, to the north by Pennsylvania, and to the east by New Jersey and the Atlantic Ocean. The state takes its name from Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an English nobleman and Virginia's first colonial governor.Delaware occupies the northeastern portion of the Delmarva Peninsula. It is the second smallest and sixth least populous state, but the sixth most densely populated. Delaware is divided into three counties, the lowest number of any state. From north to south, they are New Castle County, Kent County, and Sussex County. While the southern two counties have historically been predominantly agricultural, New Castle County is more industrialized. Before its coastline was explored by Europeans in the 16th century, Delaware was inhabited by several groups of Native Americans, including the Lenape in the north and Nanticoke in the south. It was initially colonized by Dutch traders at Zwaanendael, near the present town of Lewes, in 1631. Delaware was one of the 13 colonies participating in the American Revolution. On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, and has since been known as The First State.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in present-day Delaware in the middle region by establishing a trading post at Zwaanendael, near the site of Lewes in 1631. Within a year all the settlers were killed in a dispute with area Native American tribes. In 1638 New Sweden, a Swedish trading post and colony, was established, which lasted for 17 years, until the Dutch came back and reconquered the area. But just 9 years later they were conquered by a fleet of English ships, under the direction of James, Duke of York. Delaware was one of the 13 colonies participating in the American Revolution. On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, and has since promoted itself as The First State.
2. Delaware is the second-smallest state in the country. It stretches just under 100 miles long, and is only 35 miles at its widest point. With fewer than one million residents and a total area not much larger than Anchorage, Alaska, the state of Delaware is naturally at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes the rest of the country's appreciation for it. Despite being the second-smallest state, Delaware is also the sixth most densely populated state in America.
3. In the 1820s the DuPont family (probably best known as being allied to the General Motors Company during the 1930s) established a gunpowder mill on the banks of Brandywine River in Wilmington. Over time, the family turned into the largest producer of gunpowder in the world. Even now, the family are responsible for 5-10% of the total employment of the population of Delaware.
4. The log cabin originated in Finland. Finnish settlers arrived in Delaware in the mid-1600s and brought with them plans for the log cabin, one of the enduring symbols of the American pioneer. One of the cabins has been preserved and is on display at the Delaware Agricultural Museum in Dover.
5. Tradition holds the first time Betsy Ross's famous flag was flown was at the Battle of Cooch's Bridge. This historic site is located on route 4 in Newark.
6. Thomas Garret lost his entire fortune in his battle against slavery. He was sued by a Maryland slave owner and fined for aiding a black family in flight. Over his lifetime, Garrett reportedly helped more than 2,000 fugitive slaves move through Delaware, an important stop on the Underground Railroad.
7. Dover is the capital and second-largest city in the U.S. state of Delaware. It is also the county seat of Kent County. It is located on the St. Jones River in the Delaware River coastal plain. It was named by William Penn of Dover in Kent, England. As of 2010, the city had a population of 36,047.

New Castle - Volte no tempo e experimente o charme e a beleza do New Castle colonial.

Black History Month Lesson At Zwaanendael Museum
TODAY ZWANENDEL MUSEUM IN LEWES HELD AN AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY LESSON LED BY ARCHEOLOGIST JOHN MCCARTHY.
THE AUDIENCE LEARNED ABOUT CHARLES TILTON, ONE OF THE EARLIEST AFRICAN -AMERICAN LANDOWNERS IN DELAWARE.
The 1800 Federal census lists Charles as a free negro with a family of nine.
TILTON'S LAND WAS ON A CURRENT DAY STATE PARK NEAR HARRINGTON, IN THE EARLY 1800'S
Not only was a fella who was born into slavery, who manages to become free, but to become free and to stay in Delaware is a usual thing, to become a prosperous farmer is even more unusual.
SOME AFRICAN -AMERICANS IN ATTENDANCE, ONE COMING AS FAR AS NEWARK FELT PRIDE IN HEARING TILTON'S STORY.
Too often we don't hear too much about African American history month and what we do hear about it can be a bit depressing so it's good to hear about a landowner who made a living for itself at a time it was very hard to do as a black person.
THE MUSEUM HAD ARTIFACTS ONSITE FROM WHAT THEY BELIEVE IS TILTON'S HOME.
THEY WERE GLAD THEY WERE ABLE TO HELP HIS STORY BE TOLD
Our mission is to save Delaware History and disseminate history to people because without history you can't move forward. Part of our history is the African American story.
NOT TOO MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT CHARLES TILTON BUT WHAT HE DO KNOW HE IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY.
