Porcelain exhibition Zwinger Palace Dresden Germany
Augustus The Strong, King of Poland, founded a 20,000 piece porcelain collection in 1715, originating from Meissen, China and Japan. It is beautifully displayed in the Zwinger Palace in Dresden Germany. When in Germany, a visit to this display “is a must do”. We spent half a day admiring the beautiful artistic items. When in Dresden, one cannot go past the Semper Oper, one of the world’s finest opera houses and adjacent to The Zwinger Palace.

Dresden's Zwinger Palace is famous around the world for its beautiful baroque architecture. It was built in 1709 during the reign of Augustus the Strong. The remarkable sculptures adorning the gallery walls are by various artists and help make this one of the main attractions in Saxony's regional capital.The Zwinger Palace in Dresden was built in 1709. It was originally an open area surrounded by wooden buildings which was used by the Saxon nobility for tournaments and other courtly pursuits.
Old Town:
On the left bank of the Elbe is Dresden's historical centre with buildings from the Renaissance, the Baroque and the 19th century. Despite being devastated in the Second World War, the Altstadt (Old Town) has kept or regained its attractive buildings.
The most well-known symbol of the rebuilding of the city centre is Dresden Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), the magnificent domed Baroque church which again dominates the Dresden skyline.
After the Second World War, Neumarkt square and the symbolic ruins of the Frauenkirche remained almost untouched for half a century before also coming up for construction.
Neustadt District:
The quarter on the right banks of the Elbe is called Neustadt, even though the settlement across the Old City bore the name Altendresden (Olden Dresden) until the 18th century. Freedom of the city was granted already in 1403, but nevertheless it always remained in the shade of the residence on the other side of the Elbe. After a disastrous fire in 1685 the quarter – in the meanwhile incorporated into Dresden – was systematically rebuilt as the New Town near Dresden, the Neustadt quarter.
The baroque reconstruction produced attractive streets and sites which can still be experienced in the area around Königstrasse. Prelude to the Inner Neustadt is the Neustädter Markt with the equestrian statue of the Saxon elector and Polish king Frederick August I, the Golden Horseman. Beyond the statue is the beginning of the Hauptstrasse, the main street of the historical quarter.
Frauenkirche:
Since October, 30th 2005 the steeple of the Frauenkirche overtops the Dresden skyline again. The reconstruction of the Frauenkirche is an impressive symbol of international reconciliation after World War II. The consecration attracted attention throughout the world. Millions of people have already visited the Frauenkirche.
The sacred building was erected between 1726 and 1743, following the designs of George Bähr. Its characteristic dome, called the stone bell owing to its shape, collapsed on February 15th, 1945 under the rain of bombs. An anti-war monument during the GDR period, the rebuilding is finished now.
The Frauenkirche is a symbol of conciliation, largely with donations from German and international foundations. The Neumarkt quarter around the church is also to regain its status as the historical heart of the city.
Altmarkt Square:
The large rectangular market-place has been the heart of the town since Dresden's foundation and was mentioned for the first time in a document in 1370. Markets, festivities, tournaments and games were staged here and important historical events also turned the Altmarkt square into one of the social centres in town. During the bombing raids of February 1945 the historical Altmarkt square was completely destroyed. Reconstruction on a changed ground plan began in 1953.

The Zwinger (Der Dresdner Zwinger) is a palace in Dresden, eastern Germany, built in Rococo style and designed by court architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann. It served as the orangery, exhibition gallery and festival arena of the Dresden Court.
The location was formerly part of the Dresden fortress of which the outer wall is conserved. The name derives from the German word Zwinger (outer ward of a concentric castle); it was for the cannons that were placed between the outer wall and the major wall. The Zwinger was not enclosed until the Neoclassical building by Gottfried Semper called the Semper Gallery was built on its northern side.
Today, the Zwinger is a museum complex that contains the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery), the Dresden Porcelain Collection (Porzellansammlung) and the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon (Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments).

Der Dresdner Zwinger
Neben der Frauenkirche und der Semperoper zählt der Zwinger zu den bekanntesten Baudenkmalen Dresdens.
Das Gebäudeensemble ist einfach beeindruckend, ein komplett eingeschlossener barocker Innenhof mit sehr anmutigen Elementen umschließt eine kleine Gartenanlage und mag so gar nicht zu dem Begriff Zwinger, passen, den man eigentlich eher mit einem Käfig in Verbindung bringt.
Warum aber der Name Zwinger? Dies geht auf eine im Mittelalter übliche Bezeichnung eines Festungsteils zwischen der äußeren und inneren Festungsmauer zurück.

Was Dresden so einzigartig und für über sieben Millionen Touristen im Jahr so sehenswert macht, lässt sich nicht in ein Wort fassen: Die Stadt, die im 18. Jahrhundert dank der Pracht- und Prunksucht August des Starken eine der schönsten Städte Europas war, steht heute wieder in voller Blüte da. Die Frauenkirche, der Zwinger, die Semperoper oder die Weiße Flotte - die Stadt an der Elbe wirkt als barockes Gesamtkunstwerk wie ein riesiges Museum.
Dresden, die Barockstadt: Im Jahre 1720 erließ ein Gouverneur namens Graf Wackerbarth ein Baureglement für die Stadt, das sie bis heute prägen sollte. In wenigen Jahrzehnten entstanden mit Zwinger, den Brühlschen Terrassen, Hof- und Frauenkirche weltberühmte architektonische Meisterwerke.
Zwischen 1871 und 1878 ließ Gottfried Semper die nach ihm benannte, weltbekannte Oper folgen. Es war übrigens sein zweiter Versuch. Die erste Oper, ebenfalls von ihm konzipiert, war 1869 abgebrannt.
Überhaupt Dresden, die Kulturstadt: Neben der Semperoper hat die Stadt weitere Highlights von Weltformat. Da sind vor allem die Bilder, Plastiken und Kunstschätze in den Galerien Alter Meister im Zwinger und in den Galerien Neuer Meister im Albertinum bei den Brühlschen Terrassen. Caspar David Friedrich, ein großer Sohn der Stadt, ist bei den Neuen Meistern prominent vertreten, Rubens, Rembrandt und viele andere bei den Alten. Und natürlich Raffael: Seine Sixtinische Madonna mit den kleinen, frechen Engeln am unteren Bildrand ist eines der berühmtesten Gemälde der Geschichte überhaupt.
In Dresden isst man gut, deftig und gerne süß. Die Quarkkeulchen sind als Dessert ein Hit, der Christstollen ist ein Exportschlager. In der Altstadt, vor allem in der Münzgasse, gibt es eine rege Kneipen- und Cafészene. Absolutes Highlight im Winter ist der Striezelmarkt.
Zum Besuch in Dresden gehört auch eine Fahrt mit dem Elbschiff. Die Mississippi-Raddampfer bilden die größte Flotte ihrer Art in Europa. Klassischerweise fährt man die Elbe hinauf nach Schloss Pillnitz, zur herrlichen Sommerresidenz des starken August. Ernst zu nehmenden Gerüchten zu Folge sollen hier, in den Gemächern des Schlosses, aber auch draußen im Lustgarten, eine ganze Reihe seiner vielen Nachfahren entstanden sein...

The Zwinger is a beautiful palace in the German city of Dresden. Got the bus from Prague (I took Leo Bus which is very recommended) and traveled for almost 2.5 hour each way. A very good alternative to do day tour from Prague. Zwinger is located near Dresden Central Station, so you can walk from there for about 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can take tram.
