Welcome to Saalbach-HInterglemm, Austria
Let's yodel on the Austrian Alps. Hike up the mountains. And eat wonderful Austrian food.
Two of Travels With Sheila's favorite physical activities are hiking and snowshoeing, both in Europe. Why Europe? Because of the fantabulous network of marked trails. So difficult to get lost. Difficult but I have managed to occasionally take a wrong turn resulting in screaming matches between ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and myself.
Come along while we spend two weeks in the beautiful, huge Winter Ski Circus/Summer Hiking Area of Saalbach Hinterglemm, Austria.
Hiking Up to The Zwolferkogelbahn, Austria
The Zwolferkogelbahn was one of the four gondolas open during the summer. Trails lead up, down, around, in all directions during summer. Wide open ski pistes, chair lifts, t-bars do the same during winter.
Summertime? Meadows filled with fat, healthy cows wearing clanking cow bells. Flower bedecked alpen restaurants offering schnaps, coffee, tortes. Mountain bikers whizzing down the trails and hikers.
Each of the four gondolas have a snapshot cam located in a view spot that will take a free photograph of you. Press the button, download later off the Saalbach Hinterglemm website. What a wonderful idea and memory of a gorgeous day spent hiking in the mountains of Austria.
SkiCircus, Hinterglemm - Black 15, Red 13a
2nd April 2018, 12:44
Heading from top of Zwolferkogel go past the small outdoor bar and keep left at 0:25 to get onto Black 15. This is known as the World Cup run and is steep but fairly wide. Snow conditions were very good on this. The piste is Black 15 until you reach the gondola midstation at 3:50. Here I took the left hand side which is Red 13a. Alternative would be the other side of the mid station to get onto Red12 or the Blue runs to reach the bottom. The pistes aren't really separate so it's possible to cut across to the other pistes regardless of which route you take. The Red 13a did seem to be the quietest option however.
The run continues down to the distinctive Zwolferkogelbahn base station.
SkiCircus, Saalbach, Hinterglemm - Red 6, Red 6A, repeat
6th April 2018, 12:25
A repeat run of earlier in the week ( Starting from top of Westgipfelbahn and following the Red 6 to the middle station at 5:00, which then becomes the Red 6A for the remainder of the run down into Hinterglemm.
At 6:00 on the right you can see the top of the Unterschwarzach gondola that serves the night skiing area. At the bottom at 8:00 is the main nursery area, and at 8:20 I pass the 12er Express that allows to link over to the Zwolferkogel gondola. On the right at this point are the Unterschwarzach button lifts. Although they run up in parallel, at the top you can't cross over, presumably to minimise accidents.Further on at 8:35 is the funpark lift that serves much the same nursery slope but is a bit longer and very slightly higher, also allowing access into the snow park.
