Bigwood 2
[R]evolution Canvas presents Bigwood2 at artSPACE, Durban - July 18 2008
Bigwood2 is sponsored by [R]evolution. This year's event featured some of South Africa's best graffiti artists, designers and illustrators. All artists have a strong individual style, a unique and rare talent, and pack some heavyweight skills in their arsenal. It's also the biggest exhibition of this kind the country has seen to date. 2008's event saw over 40 artists taking part, with a strong Cape Town contingency this time round. We're proud to have had legendary artists Senyol, Theory1, Sadmascot, twelve AmiCollective members and a host of other talented Cape Town artists involved.
[R]evolution generously supplied blank skateboard decks to artists to customize. These limited edition (one of a kind) decks were on display at Bigwood2. [R]evolution are doing good things for local artists.
We're taking Bigwood2 to an international stage with this year's event traveling to Artspace Berlin in March 2009. As Bigwood (Bigwood artists and all those who support), we're pulling together collectively to have South African talent displayed to a wider audience. So drop by and show your support!

City of Durban fosters young artistic talent
The South African city of Durban has a number of initiatives in place to give young artists the opportunity to showcase their work. Recently, artists were challenged to depict the city in the most creative way, using any art form they chose. Sabastien Pillay won the competition for his illustration Dinner Is Served, which portrays Durban within a popular street dish known as a bunny chow. Sumitra Nydoo finds out what inspires this young man

Mondli Mbhele is a member of Amasosha Art Movement, a collective of young Durban artists that promotes solidarity among fellow artists. Mbhele’s work questions the transformation of the life of a domestic worker in post apartheid South Africa.
He is interested in the difficult conditions that domestic workers face their work environments, without forgetting the dreams they have to uplift their families. He uses collage as his medium of expression. According to Mbhele, newspapers carry the events and stories of people but once people read it they throw it away.
He collects those stories and recycles them into a new form of art that will endure and create a new dialogue that will never be destroyed again.
“With my work, I use mostly found objects, the found objects can be newspapers and magazines because they carry stories about people and once they are done with them, they throw them away. So I collect those stories and create a new dialogue. The reason why I decided to work with these materials, it’s because I saw how they compliment my work, which is inspired by domestic workers.”
“Domestic workers are people who work hard but they are not appreciated. So I saw how the stories of domestic workers are similar with the discarded materials that I work with as a multimedia artist. So I am not boxed into what material do I work with, I use any material that’s at my disposal.”
“My name is Mondli Mbhele, I am a full time Durban based visual artist. I specialise with collage as my medium of expression. The thinking behind working with recycled material its because they are easily accessible and I don’t have to buy them. What I can say about my work is that I was inspired by my grandmother. She was a domestic worker, her name was Gogo Minky Tsolo.”
“So my granny worked as a domestic worker until she was 80 years old. She worked for the same family for 30 years. So when it was time for her to go on pensioner, she was only given R7000. So that’s where my concept developed and also because I attended classes at the BAT centre and DUT.”
“I used to walk going home and I would pass places like Glenwood, I would see old women and that made me more curious because I wanted to know what was happening in their life because I already knew what had happened to my granny.”

It's Like A Second Skin (ICA Live Art Festival compilation video)
I had a lot of love surrounding me for this performance/experiment in the form of help and support. In Cape Town, my good friend Kimberly Burger set up the installation of this work at the Guy Ritchie gallery at Hiddingh Campus, UCT, while in Durban i was given parcans and gels from The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and many extra hands from friends who helped with the episodic nature of the work as well as the 'filming' of the work on Instagram.
For many reasons, i decided to live stream this performance from my bedroom in Durban to a gallery in Cape Town. One, i felt this method better captured the private/public aspect of the work as it was performed in my bed and bedroom and streamed publicly where the audience is unseen, much like our social media reality. Second, I intended to comment on the elite nature of artistic spaces where Durban is often a space deprived of artistic exposure and well, Instagram is for (almost) everyone. Three, i had to be creative with the limited 'emerging artist' budget. And four, it was a first for me and 'firsts' are always exciting :) Enjoy.
