Places to see in ( Girona - Spain )
Girona is a city in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region, beside the River Onyar. It’s known for its medieval architecture, walled Old Quarter (Barri Vell) and the Roman remains of the Força Vella fortress. Landscaped gardens line the Passeig Arqueològic, a walkway following the Old Quarter’s medieval walls, which include watchtowers with sweeping views.
Girona is a city in the northeast of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia in Spain, at the confluence of the rivers Ter, Onyar, Galligants, and Güell , Girona is the capital of the province of the same name and of the comarca of the Gironès. It is located 99 km (62 mi) northeast of Barcelona. Girona is one of the major Catalan cities.
Girona has undergone twenty-five sieges and been captured seven times. It was besieged by the French royal armies under Charles de Monchy d'Hocquincourt in 1653, under Bernardin Gigault de Bellefonds in 1684, and twice in 1694 under Anne Jules de Noailles. In May 1809, it was besieged by 35,000 French Napoleonic troops under Vergier, Augereau and St. Cyr, and held out obstinately under the leadership of Alvarez until disease and famine compelled it to capitulate on the 12th of December. Finally, the French conquered the city in 1809, after 7 months of siege. Girona was center of the Ter department during the French rule, which lasted from 1809 to 1813. The defensive city walls were demolished at the end of the 19th century to allow for the expansion of the city. In recent years, the missing parts of the city walls on the eastern side of the city have been reconstructed. Called the Passeig de la Muralla it now forms a tourist route around the old city.
Girona is a popular destination for tourists and Barcelona day-trippers - the train journey from Barcelona Sants to Girona takes approximately forty minutes on express trains. The old town stands on the steep hill of the Capuchins to the east of the river Onyar, while the more modern section stands on the plains to the west.
The ancient cathedral, which stood on the site of the present one, was used by the Moors as a mosque, and after their final expulsion was either entirely remodelled or rebuilt. The present edifice is one of the most important monuments of the school of the Majorcan architect Jaume Fabre and an excellent example of Catalan Gothic architecture.
The old fortifications are another popular sight. Historically, these have played a vital role in protecting Girona from invaders for hundreds of years.
The Collegiate Church of Sant Feliu is noteworthy from an architectural point of view. Its style is 14th-century Gothic, the façade dating from the 18th, and it is one of the few Spanish churches which possesses a genuine spire.
The Benedictine church of Sant Pere de Galligants is in early Romanesque style. From the same period is the Monastery of St. Daniel.
The Plaça de la Independència, which refers to the War of Spanish Independence against Napoleon Bonaparte, is one of the best known and most frequented places in Girona.
Characteristic of Girona are the picturesque houses overlooking the river Onyar. These were built over many years and give the flavour of a small Mediterranean city. The façades are painted according to a palette created by Enric Ansesa, James J. Faixó and the architects Fuses and J. Viader. One of these houses (at Ballesteries 29, Girona) is Casa Masó, the birthplace of the architect Rafael Masó and an example of Noucentisme in Girona. Since 2006 it has been the headquarters of the Fundació Rafael Maso. The river façade can be recognised by its unique white color.
Although most traces of Girona's rich Jewish history were wiped out when the Jews were expelled from Spain , a few remain. On Carrer de Sant Llorenc, a rectangular indentation that once held a mezuzah can be seen on the doorway of an old building.

Top 10 Famous & Deadly Swords
10. Tomoyuki Yamashita’s Sword: During his military career, Tomoyuki Yamashita owned a personal sword that contained a blade manufactured by famous sword maker Fujiwara Kanenaga sometime between 1640 and 1680. The weapon had its handle remade in the early 1900s. The Samurai sword was surrendered by General Yamashita, along with his army, on September 2, 1945. It was taken by General MacArthur and given to the West Point Military Museum where it remains today.
9. Curved Saber of San Martin: One of the most cherished possessions of José de San Martín was a curved sword that he purchased in London. The curved sword stayed with San Martín until his death and was then passed down to the General de la Republica Argentina, Don Juan Manuel de Rosas. In 1896 the weapon was sent to the National Historical Museum in Buenos Aires where it remains today.
8. Seven-Branched Sword: The weapon is a 74.9 cm long iron sword with six branch-like protrusions along the central blade, which is 65.5 cm. The sword was developed for ceremonial purposes and was not built for battle. In 1870 a Shinto priest named Masatomo Kan discovered two inscriptions on the Seven-Branched Sword.
7. Wallace Sword: The William Wallace sword is located at the National Monument in Stirling, Scotland. The shaft of the sword measures 4 feet by 4 inches in length (132cm) and it weighs 6.0 lb (2.7 kg). The sword is said to be the weapon that Wallace used at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 and the Battle of Falkirk (1298). The pommel on the sword consists of an onion-shaped piece of gilded iron and the grip is wrapped with dark brown leather.
6. Tizona: Tizona is a sword that was used by El Cid to fight against the Moors. The weapon is one of Spain’s most cherished relics and is believed to have been forged in Córdoba, Spain, although considerable amounts of Damascus steel can be found in its blade. Damascus steel was primarily used in the Middle East. Tizona is 103 cm/40.5 inches long and weighs 1.1 kg/2.4 pounds.
5. Napoleon’s Sword: In the summer of 2007, a gold-encrusted sword that once belonged to Napoleon was auctioned off in France for more than $6.4 million dollars. The sword was used by Napoleon in battle. In the early 1800s, Napoleon presented the weapon to his brother as a wedding gift. In 1978, the sword was declared a national treasure in France
4. Sword of Mercy: The Sword of Mercy has a broken blade, which is cut off short and square. In 1236, the weapon was given the name curtana and has since been used for royal ceremonies. The Sword of Mercy is part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom and is one of only five swords used during the coronation of the British monarch.
3. Zulfigar: Some historical drawings depict the sword with a split, V-shaped blade. According to the Twelver Shia, the weapon survives today and is kept in the possession of Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi. The weapon is part of the famous collection called al-Jafr.
2. Honjo Masamune: The sword was passed down from one Shogun to another for generations. In 1939 the weapon was named a national treasure in Japan, but remained in the Kii branch of the Tokugawa family. The last known owner of Honjo Masamune was Tokugawa Iemasa. Shortly thereafter in January 1946, the Mejiro police gave the swords to Sgt. Coldy Bimore (U.S. 7th Cavalry). Honjo Masamune is one of the most important historical artifacts to disappear at the end of World War II.
1. Joyeuse: Joyeuse is the name of Charlemagne’s personal sword. Today, there are two swords attributed to Joyeuse. One is a saber that is kept in the Weltliche Schatzkammer in Vienna, while the other is housed at the Louvre in France. Charlemagne’s sword appears in many legends and historical documents. Bulfinch’s Mythology described Charlemagne using Joyeuse to behead the Saracen commander Corsuble as well as to knight his friend Ogier the Dane.

Video transcript:
- This is the second time actually we've run a forum in Girona Costa Brava, but this time it's Tour de Mice, which is a cycling tour, a genuine tour that moves. We wanted to look for a location that had real authenticity, because this event is really about connecting people in a way that so many others don't, and we do that through a one-to-one meetings between the buyers and the suppliers. We do it through the experiences, and we also do it by bringing people in contact with the industry, the infrastructure, the landscape, the culture, the history, the language, the food of the region.
- Here in this four days, it was a great mixture of fan of cycling with networking events, one-to-one meeting.
- And at the same time, we enjoyed culture, astronomy, and all the welcoming people here in Spain.
- We went to beautiful places, medieval towns, so yeah, it was really a lot of fun here in the Costa Brava area.
- I think definitely Girona, because of its cultural background and because of as well the infrastructure is amazing. Here you can find actually everything you need for your events, and beautiful, beautiful, atmosphere around.
- If these guys are making this event again, I will definitely be back.

Highlander Katanas
1. Highlander Katana (1986).
Custom made replica of the Ramirez/Connor MacLeod katana from the original Highlander 1986 film. Made by Daryl Kyle of Texas Steel Props and Replicas. Built with the exact same parts as the original. The Tsuka (handle) is cast from the screen used hero katana and made of carbon kevlar. The tsuba (handguard) is solid bronze. The screw is a hand carved bronze mekugi pin that goes through the blade's tang, and there is a hidden mekugi near the tsuba. The blade's tang was extended to 11 inches making it full tang. The stainless steel blade, habaki (blade's collar) and saya (scabbard) were taken from an original 1980's Marto Ivory Katana, the same sword the film's production crew stripped of its parts to use on the screen used katana.
2. Highlander: The Series Season 1&2 Katana (1992).
This is the original Highlander: The Series katana as seen in Season 1 and most of season 2. First seen in the pilot episode The Gathering and last seen in episode 39 Warmonger in late season 2. At that time a deal was made with Marto of Spain to mass produce a commercial licensed version. In episode 40 Pharaoh's Daughter, late in season 2, the newly designed sword marketed as The Sword of the Dragon appeared on screen for the first time.
This is a custom made replica of the Highlander: The Series Season 1&2 katana Made by Daryl Kyle of Texas Steel Props and Replicas. Built with the exact same parts as the original. The Tsuka (handle) is made of carbon kevlar and cast from the original handle designed by Stephen Geaghan and made for the T.V. series by Sal D'Aquila. The tsuba (handguard) is the Marto Rooster Tsuba. The blade and habaki (blade's collar) are also Marto. The stainless steel blade is a Marto Tachi with a 1.5 inch sori (curve) with its tang extended to 11 inches making it Full Tang and double pinned into the tsuka(handle) by two hidden mekugi pins that go through the blade's tang.
3. Highlander: The Series Season 2.5+ Katana.
Custom made replica by Daryl Kyle of Texas Steel Props and replicas. Built with the exact same parts as the original. The Tsuka (handle) is cast from the Marto Sword of the Dragon and made of carbon kevlar. The Rooster tsuba (handguard), fuchi (handle's collar under the tsuba), habaki (blade's collar) and stainless steel blade were all taken from a 90's Marto Sword of the Dragon. The blade's tang was extended to 11 inches making it full tang and double pinned into the tsuka(handle) by two hidden mekugi pins that go through the blade's tang. The habaki (blade's collar) doesn't have the Marto logo stamp and the tsuka (handle) doesn't have the bronze collar on the dragon's neck as this replica is intended to look exactly the same as the first generation Marto Sword of the Dragon katana as seen when it first appeared on screen late in season 2 of the T.V. series. The first generation Marto Sword of the dragon didn't have the bronze collar on the handle nor the Marto logo stamp on the habaki. Halfway into the third season Marto added the bronze collar on the dragon's neck, which the series' production crew painted white or covered with white adhesive medical (cloth) tape to make it unnoticeable. In late season 4 Marto added their logo stamp on the habaki and in season 5, the series' production crew stopped painting/covering the bronze collar on the handle and it started showing.
