First, what is or is not “organic” is the subject of intense debate. In the United States, there are numerous definitions of “organic”, many of which differ significantly. Each state has their own regulations for labeling produce as “organic”. Additionally, there are 36 non-governmental organizations, which can “certify” produce as organic. Now only crops grown from unrefined minerals are recognized as “organic”. However, our Pro-TeKt is manufactured using raw material that is certified organic!
In chemistry, organic means a molecule that contains carbon. Accordingly, gasoline, motor oil, paper, etc. are “organic.” Plants do not take up any organic molecules. They must be broken down into their constituent ions, none of which are organic! In soils, these organic molecules are broken down by the action of a wide range of microbes including bacteria and mycorrhizae. However, many, if not most, certified organic fertilizers contain significant amounts of heavy metals including arsenic, lead, mercury, selenium, and others which can be dangerous to any animal consuming plants grown with those “organic” fertilizers. To avoid issues with heavy metals, Dyna-Gro uses only highly refined, technical grade raw materials in the production of all of our plant nutrition products. While this ensures high quality, nutritionally healthy crop production, it prevents our nutrients from being considered “organic”.
Organic certification is based upon the source of the raw materials, not upon the absence of heavy metals or other contaminants. A check of the analyses of registered fertilizers will reveal that some “certified organic” fertilizers contain levels of arsenic, for example, that would be illegal in drinking water! The one sensible part of the “organic” movement is minimizing or eliminating the use of chemical pesticides. Providing your plants with proper levels of Pro-TeKt, The Silicon Solution, can eliminate the need for pesticides. Dyna-Gro does not encourage the use of any chemical pesticides.
Because conventional organic fertilizers require soil born microbes to break down the organic molecules, they are particularly ineffective for hydroponic applications. Unrefined minerals do not dissolve well for hydroponic use, and many of these unrefined minerals contain quantities of impurities, some of which are toxic to plants and animals. For that reason, Dyna-Gro® products are made from high quality, refined minerals. This ensures high-quality crop production but prevents the crop from being considered “organic”.

This vintage movie – originally titled as Men of the Forest – is a dramatized documentary film on the daily lives of loggers in 1950s Georgia. It tells the story of an African-American family that works hard to save money for a power saw. It also explains timber harvest techniques and process. The film was created in 1952 by the United States Information Service (USIS) and intended for foreign audiences.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Logging is the cutting, skidding, on-site processing, and loading of trees or logs onto trucks or skeleton cars.
In forestry, the term logging is sometimes used in a narrow sense concerning the logistics of moving wood from the stump to somewhere outside the forest, usually a sawmill or a lumber yard. However, in common usage, the term may be used to indicate a range of forestry or silviculture activities.
Clearcut logging is not necessarily considered a type of logging but a harvesting or silviculture method, and is simply called clearcutting or block cutting. In the forest products industry logging companies may be referred to as logging contractors, with the smaller, non-union crews referred to as gyppo loggers.
Cutting trees with the highest value and leaving those with lower value, often diseased or malformed trees, is referred to as high grading. It is sometimes called selective logging, and confused with selection cutting, the practice of managing stands by harvesting a proportion of trees.
History of logging in the United States:
Logging has been a part of American history and deeply rooted in the growth of the United States since the early 1600s. The lumber industry has been and will continue to be a staple for life and in the past was essentially a vitality for surviving such as building homes, staying warm, and making money through livelihoods such as woodworkers, builders, and more.
The way loggers cut timber has evolved throughout time as well and although methods have changed the work is still equally as difficult. In the beginning, timber was cut near the water because it was an easier way to transport it to where it needed to go in the long run.
When loggers were forced to move away from the water and inland due to lack of trees near the water they used horses and oxen to haul their cut wood through the forest. Next came log flumes, which were essentially water filled troughs that helped guide logs down the stream and were tied together like a raft.
Tools such as chainsaws and handsaws were used and eventually harvesting machines became the main way of logging trees; this machine is called a feller buncher and can quickly cut and gather trees. The logs were then transported to mills and cut into lumber and other products and then exported to a variety of places including locations as far away as China and Australia.
Over the years, logging has become incredibly controversial due to the concern of environmental sustainability and deforestation but it’s important to realize that there are as many pros as there are cons when it comes to logging. However, the United States is still the most established and leading producer of lumber and it is a global business that is extremely important to the economy around us. The timber harvested each year provides raw materials our nation needs to create the goods and services consumers all over want and need.

A Deep Dive on Electors (Electoral College Demystified Pt 3)
Alexander Hamilton's essay on our electoral system (Federalist No. 68) is all the rage these days. But most of the ragers are pulling choice quotes out of context, ignoring the fact that Hamilton wasn't actually describing the system we have today. He's talking about a system that was scrapped long ago.

THE ARCHITECTURAL IMAGINATION
February 11 through April 16, 2017
Organized for the US Pavillion at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, Italy, The Architectural Imagination presents drawings, models, and videos of 12 speculative architecture projects designed for specific sites in Detroit but with far-reaching applications for cities around the world.
As the home of the automobile industry, the free-span concrete factory, Motown, and techno, Detroit was once a center of American imagination, not only for the products it made but also for its modern architecture and modern lifestyle, which captivated audiences worldwide. Today, like many postindustrial cities, it is coping with the effects of a declining population. Nonetheless, having emerged from bankruptcy, there is new excitement in Detroit to imagine the city’s possible futures, both in the downtown core and in its many neighborhoods. Believing in the potential of architecture to catalyze change, the curators selected visionary American architecture practices to address these futures.
The projects not only demonstrate the value and diversity of the architectural imagination, but also have the potential to spark the collective imagination, and thus launch new conversations about the importance of architecture in Detroit and cities everywhere.
This exhibition is curated by Cynthia Davidson and Mónica Ponce de León.
THE ARCHITECTS
With the help of an 11-member Detroit advisory board, they also selected four sites for the projects: a lot in Mexicantown, a riverfront post office, parcels along the Dequindre Cut, and the Packard Plant. The architects worked with Detroit residents to understand neighborhood aspirations before devising the programs and forms exhibited here.
The 12 teams of architects were selected from more than 250 submissions.
