Sri Lanka Sigiriya (Lion rock) - frescoes paintings
The Sigiriya Frescoes (info: were painted on the western surface of Sigiriya Rock which is located in the Matale District of central Sri Lanka.
They were the highlight of a massive palace complex built by King Kasyapa in 480AD.
Ancient graffiti, scribbled on the Mirror Wall, refer to the existence of as many as five hundred of frescoes covering a large section of the western surface of Sigiriya Rock. Protected in a small indent on the rock surface about a hundred meters above ground, only nineteen paintings survive today. Over the years most of the frescoes were lost due to environmental factors such as wind and rain as well as being intentionally removed due to human intervention.

Sigiriya or Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress located in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters (660 ft) high. The Gardens of the Sigiriya city are one of the most important aspects of the site
Fountains made of circular limestone plates are placed here. Underground water conduits supply water to these fountains which are still functional, especially during the rainy season. An interesting feature of the Fountain Gardens at Sigiriya is the sudden appearance and disappears of water. Waterfalls appear out of nowhere and streams seem to disappear into thin air. Circular perforated limestone slab at the Fountain Garden. When there is enough water pressure, water sprouts come out from these holes.

Ancient City of Sigiriya (UNESCO/NHK)
The ruins of the capital built by the parricidal King Kassapa I (477--95) lie on the steep slopes and at the summit of a granite peak standing some 180m high (the 'Lion's Rock', which dominates the jungle from all sides). A series of galleries and staircases emerging from the mouth of a gigantic lion constructed of bricks and plaster provide access to the site.

Sigiriya (Lion's rock) is an ancient rock fortress and palace ruin situated in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka, surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures. A popular tourist destination, Sigiriya is also renowned for its ancient paintings (frescos), which are reminiscent of the Ajanta Caves of India. The Sigiriya was built during the reign of King Kassapa I (AD 477 -- 495), and it is one of the seven World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka.[
Sigiriya may have been inhabited through prehistoric times. It was used as a rock-shelter mountain monastery from about the 5th century BC, with caves prepared and donated by devotees to the Buddhist Sangha. According to the chronicles as Mahavamsa the entire complex was built by King Kasyapa -Wikipedia

Sigiriya & Lions Rock ~ Sri Lanka
The ruins of Sigiriya are highlighted by a giant column of rock atop which a king (King Kassapa I, 477–95) built the capital of his kingdom. They are some of the most impressive ruins found anywhere.
Built by an obsessed monarch in the 5th century, Sigiriya or Lion Rock is an astonishing feat of engineering and construction. The most striking portion of Sigiriya, a terracotta and grey core of rock set in the cultural heart of Sri Lanka, rises a sheer 200 metres above a forested plain, its flattened summit sloping gently. A series of moats, ramparts and water gardens — remnants of an ancient city — spread out on two sides of the rock, with the remains of a pair of giant stone lion’s paws still guarding the staircase that leads to the summit, once occupied by a royal palace.

Sigiriya sri lanka - UNECSCO World Heritage Site
John Still, an English explorer in 1907 had observed that; The whole face of the hill appears to have been a gigantic picture gallery... the largest picture in the world perhaps.
He was referring to the world famous frescos in Sri Lankas Rock fortress Sigiriya.
Sigiriya itself is a living marvel, which some even consider as the 8th wonder of the world.

Sigiriya -- ( The Lions Rock ) The 8th wonder of the World
===++++++++=====+++++=======++++++======+
Ancient City of Sigiriya in Sri lanka - UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
Sigiriya, the spectacular 'Lion rock' fortress, stands majestically overlooking the luscious green jungle surroundings, and is one of Sri Lanka's major attractions.
Sigiriya is a major archaeological site in North Central Sri Lanka. At Sigiriya we find the ruins of an ancient palace complex built during the reign of King Kasyapa. It has been ascribed by UNESCO as one of the seven World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka.
Probably the most recognizable feature in Sri Lanka is the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya. Originally built in 477 A.D. as an impregnable fortress and palace, Sigiriya was later used as a monastic refuge in the 16th and 17th centuries. The rock dramatically rises 200 meters above the surrounding plains and it is a wonder to imagine how they managed to carry up the materials necessary for its construction. At the base lies the remains of the royal rock and water gardens in what once was the lush pleasure gardens of the royalty. The most significant feature of the Rock would have been the Lion staircase leading to the palace garden on the summit. Based on the ideas described in some of the graffiti, this Lion staircase could be visualised as a gigantic figure towering majestically against the granite cliff, facing north, bright coloured, and awe-inspiring.
Built in the 5 century AC this magnificent complex of geometrically laid gardens, pools, fountains (still working today) as well as oldest surviving murals of maidens has been a palace of the King Kasyapa. About halfway up the rock is the sheltered gallery of frescoes painted on the sheer rock face. Some of them are still in remarkably good condition. Only 22 out of an estimated 500 pictures now remain.
The Sigiriya rock fortress was built by King Kasyapa, a son of King Dhatusena. As legend goes, King Dhatusena was overthrown and walled in, alive by Kasyapa in 473 AD. Mogallana, Dhatusena's son by the true queen fled to India, vowing revenge.
Kasyapa fearing an invasion built this impregnable fortress at Sigiriya.
When the invasion finally came in 491, Kasyapa rode out to battle in his war elephant. In an attempt to out-flank his half-brother, Kasyapa took a wrong turn, where his elephant got stuck in the mud. His soldiers, thinking Kasyapa was retreating fled abandoning him, and he took his own life.
Sigiriya later became a monastic refuge, but eventually fell into disrepair.

RESPLENDENT ISLAND...........“Undoubtedly the finest Island of its size in the entire world” was how Marco Polo described Sri Lanka after discovering this Asian jewel on his fabled travels in search of the riches and mysteries of the orient.
Seven centuries later and it was my turn to be impressed by the diversity of genuinely wonderful attractions this small island State off the southern tip of Indian has to offer.
Resplendent Island - the English translation of Sri Lanka, boasts over 400 miles
of mostly unspoilt palm fringed beaches, baked by the tropical sun lapped by the turquoise blue waters of the Indian Ocean.
Deep within Sri Lanka's interior are jungles, forests, and vast nature reserves teaming with wildlife including that most powerful but gentle of animals, the elephant.
One of the most popular excursions on Sri Lanka is to the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage, funded by the Government, where around 90 younger elephants are cared for - a two to three hour drive from the capital, Colombo.
A visit here should be timed to coincide with the elephant’s bath-time, usually around midday, when they escape the heat by bathing together in the spectacular setting of the local river, their long trunks spraying the cool waters over themselves, their keepers, and anyone else who gets in their way.
To picture this setting think of the film “Bridge Over the River Qui” - for it was here where film director David Lean made the classic prisoner of war drama,
temporarily turning this tranquil corner of Sri Lanka into World War Two Burma.
At the Orphanage entrance a few elephants selected for their calmness and obedience give rides to tourists, a must experience for kids of all ages. Loose clothing is required in order to be able to straddle an elephant’s very wide back.
Tamed and trained elephants can also to be seen throughout the land working,
using their mighty trunks to shift heavy loads with far more grace than any forklift truck.
In Sri Lanka there are highlands made olive green by tea plantations, where line after line of tea bushes ring the mountainsides, a like the contours on a map.
Tourists who venture here can watch brightly dressed women, weighed down with an array of ethnic jewellery, pluck the tea and then sample the fruits of their labours, a cuppa so fresh it can have quite a kick.
At Sri Lanka’s core is the fine city of Kandy, set besides a picturesque lake with Mountain backdrop. Half close your eyes you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the Alps in summer.
However with the Equator just a few hundred miles to the south, the climate is always hot and humid, however Kandy, at 500 metres above sea level, does offer a comparatively refreshing escape from the sometimes overpowering heat at the coast.
Kandy’s main attraction is the Temple of the Tooth housing one of Buddhism's most sacred relics, a tooth believed to have been taken from the Buddha himself as he lay on his funeral pyre in 543BC.
The Temple in the setting throughout the year for elaborate and spectacular religious ceremonies which are made even more colourful by the bright orange robes worn by both the male and female Buddhist monks.
Throughout Sri Lanka the scenery is colourful, dramatic, and exotic, but perhaps nowhere more so than at Sigiriya where a gigantic rock standing 200 metres high dominates the surrounding rain forest.
On the summit in 473 AD. Kasyapa, the son of a King built a fortress. Later the caves around the rock became a Buddhist monastery. Those who climb the 900 steps to the top of Sigiriya, are to be rewarded with stunning views.
Along the West and South West coast of Sri Lanka there are a large number of delightful resorts with quality low-rise hotels built straight on to the beach and the rolling Indian Ocean.
Cuisine
A traditional Sri Lankan meal consists of a number of dishes placed on the table and shared by all. These are often curried to a range of heat and feature fish, beef, pork and chicken, all tasting like they did in Europe before the advent of factory farming.
Accompanying the meats are vegetable and fruit dishes including the wonderful sweet and scour Banana Bloom made from banana bunches when still only the size of the human hand.
Around the coast excellent seafood is to be found in abundance, always fresh from the clean waters around the Island, and often at hotels barbecued out of doors at night under the tropical moon.
Religion
One aspect of Sri Lanka, which adds to its fascination, are the nation's different religious groups. Nearly 70% of the people are Buddhists - the Singhalese, with Hindus - who are largely the Tamils, and the Muslim and Christian religions making up the remainder.
The contrasting, differing, and often fascinating style of the architecture reflected in the Temples, Mosques and Churches of Sri Lanka, give an added cultural dimension to this destination.........FOR MORE: robinnowacki@hotmail.com
Sigiriya-සීගිරිය
I saw the lion lord of Sigiriya as he wished. Thereafter, I lost sight of the golden rocks of the rock. This is the meaning of the poem. Further, the architectural art has been used as the basic principle of geometric or ceramic design found in ancient Egyptian or Persian gardens. It is amazing how bricks were brought in to build a palace complex on a large rock. Surrounded by mall chambers, chambers, gateway profiles and many ponds, the throne is stunning. This palace was the heart and center of a great architectural planning adventure called Sigiriya. Covering an area of three and a half acres at the top of the stone, this magnificent palace is a magnificent monument that reflects the power and power of the State. And the stone gardens, which intensify the value of the palace, Designed by a cascading waterfall, the Sigiriya architects' creative skills and ornamental thinking speak to the world. It was a garden. Like the horticultural art of SigiriyaSigiriya frescoesIt also gives me a sense of support. Some of these scholars have tried to portray the extremities of King Kassapa, which was once the western wall of the rock, which has been preserved in the mural gallery without being harmed by the rains. But the subject of these murals is the Apsaras or Divinities. According to Professor Senarath Pranavamada, the dips represent the clouds and lightning. But those who have come to see Sigiriya in the past have seen the beauty of a beautiful woman. These Sigiriya paintings showcase the Sri Lankan style of classical art, which is unique to contemporary South Asian art traditions. One of the most memorable remains of Sigiriya is the collection of murals, which are covered with murals below the frescoes. These songs are called Sigiri Gee. These songs show that Sigiriya has become a haven for artists from all parts of the country. Who was in CeylonThe great archaeologist Professor Senarath Paranavithana states that King Kasyapa made a fondness for Sigiriya and embraced a goddess like the Kewara.
