England: Things to do in City of Bath - Roman Baths, Jane Austin, and Bus tours

After our day in Stonehenge and Avebury ( We spent a day in the City of Bath, England. We visited the Roman Baths, Jane Austen museum, and took one of the bus tours. Instead of trying to find parking in the old city or trying to afford the expensive hotels, B&B, and other accommodation in Bath, we spent the night in Swindon and took a train on the GWR railway into the city. It actually worked out to be quicker in many ways. The weather was a little overcast but the flowers were out and the it was quite warm. The Georgian architecture was a marvel and we visited the Abbey where we got a brief history lesson from a lay preacher, then to the Roman Baths which were amazing, followed by lunch at a pub, a bus tour, a playground, a visit to Jane Austen Centre, and some shopping. It was a long but fun adventure. Hope you enjoy!

Dumfries is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. Dumfries is near the mouth of the River Nith into the Solway Firth. Dumfries was a civil parish and became the county town of the former county of Dumfriesshire. Dumfries is nicknamed Queen of the South. People from Dumfries are known colloquially as Doonhamers.

Like the rest of Dumfries and Galloway, of Scotland's three major geographical areas Dumfries lies in the Southern Uplands. The river Nith runs through Dumfries toward the Solway Firth in a southwards direction splitting the town into East and West.

Dumfries has a long history as a county town, and as the market town of a surrounding rural hinterland. Dumfries is a relatively prosperous community but the town centre has been exposed to the centrifugal forces that have seen retail, business, educational, residential and other uses gravitate towards the town's urban fringe.

Located on top of a small hill, Dumfries Museum is centred on the 18th century windmill which stands above the town. Included are fossil footprints left by prehistoric reptiles. Based in the control tower near Tinwald Downs, the aviation museum has an extensive indoor display of memorabilia which strives to preserve aviation heritage, much of which has come via various recovery activities.

The Theatre Royal, Dumfries was built in 1792 and is the oldest working theatre in Scotland. There are a number of festivals which take place throughout the year, mostly based on traditional values. Guid Nychburris (Middle Scots, meaning Good Neighbours) is the main festival of the year, a ceremony which is largely based on the theme of a positive community spirit.

Dumfries is linked to the Northbound A74(M) motorway at Beattock via the A701 road. The A75 road eastbound links Dumfries to the southbound A74(M), leading to the M6 motorway and Carlisle. The A75 road west links Dumfries with the ferry port of Stranraer. The A76 road connects to Kilmarnock in Ayrshire. Dumfries railway station lies on the Glasgow South Western Line. It was awarded Best Station Awards by British Rail in 1986 and 1987. The train service is now operated by private company Abellio ScotRail which provides services to Glasgow and Carlisle, and less frequent services direct to Newcastle. The nearest station to Dumfries on the West Coast Mainline is 14 miles (23 km) east along the A709 road at Lockerbie, and the nearest West Coast Mainline station linking directly to Dumfries by rail is Carlisle.

As the largest settlement in Southern Scotland, Dumfries is recognised as a centre for visiting surrounding points of interest. The following are all within easy reach:

Criffel – a hill on the Solway Coast popular with hill walkers for its magnificent views of the Southern Scottish coastline and across the Solway Firth to the Lake District of Cumbria
Threave Castle in Castle Douglas, home to the Douglas Clan of James Douglas who fought with Robert the Bruce
Moniaive conservation village
Moffat and the views nearby of The Devil's Beef Tub, The Grey Mare's Tail waterfall and the A708 from Moffat past the Grey Mare's Tail to St Mary's Loch.
Mabie Forest - popular destinations for outdoor recreation such as mountain bike and walking.
Ae village and forest
Lochmaben with its lochs popular with boaters and also its history with Robert the Bruce
Wanlockhead – Britain's highest village registered at 1,531 feet (467 m) above sea level and the Lead Mining Museum

Kagyu Samyé Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre was the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to have been established in the West.

Scotland Shorts - The Forests of South Scotland

The south of Scotland is a picturesque corner of the country with miles of rolling hills, swooping valleys, sandy beaches, acres of forests and green spaces, as well as many historic attractions to explore.

Less than an hour from Edinburgh, Tweed Valley is the perfect place to get away from the bustling city life and out into nature. If you’re a fan of fishing, the River Tweed is a popular location for catching salmon. Or if you’re a keen walker, take on the challenge of the Southern Upland Way, whilst cyclists can find out why the Tour of Britain started its Scottish leg in the town of Peebles.

In the south of Scotland there are eight 7Stanes Mountain Biking Centres; Glentrool, Glentress, Dalbeattie, Ae, Mabie, Kirroughtree, Newcastleton and Innerleithen, which are spread out across Dumfries & Galloway and the Scottish Borders. It’s a great place for mountain biking enthusiasts with hundreds of trails and routes that accommodate for the complete beginner as well as the experienced riders. Galloway Forest Park is Britain’s largest forest park and is home to dramatic ancient woodland, magnificent scenery, and an astonishing variety of local wildlife. Whether you want to walk, cycle, fish or just relax in the tearooms, there will be something for everyone.

There are many accessible stargazing spots located throughout the Scottish mainland and islands, but you can’t do much better than Galloway Forest Park for prime stargazing conditions. Britain’s First Dark Sky Park - the clarity here will positively dazzle you. Spanning 75,000 hectares, very few people live within the park which means it enjoys some of the most pitch-black skies in Europe. See an astounding 7,000 stars and planets including the lustrous bow of light that is the Milky Way with just your naked eye, and on each visit, witness as the constellations slowly shift with the Earth’s orbit around the sun.

SHROPSHIRE Clun - The Quietest Place Under The Sun

Clun is aa small towh in amongst the South Shropshire hills (an AONB). It is something like 10 miles west of Craven Arms and 25 miles south of Shrewsbury. The popular town of Bishop's Castle lies 5 miles to the north

The 2011 census figures show the population to be around 680 people. Whilst only a small town it does at least have a few shops (including two butchers, antique and collectables shops, a hair salon and a convenience store). There are 2 public houses available should you so wish. Public toilets are availble, situated (I think) just off the B4368 Newcastle Road, near to a car park

Being slightly off the beaten track, research by the CPRE shows Clun to be one of the most tranquil locations in England. A nice spot to enjoy this peace is by the picturesque river bridge, where there are a couple of benches

Attractions in the town include (taken from Wiki:):
''- The Norman Clun Castle, now only a ruin but with grounds which are used for the May fair
- The fifteenth century Clun Bridge (basically a packhorse bridge), most of which is still the original stone despite being a road bridge today used by all vehicles
- Trinity Hospital, almshouses built in 1614, on Hospital Lane
- A museum in the Town Hall, on the corner of The Square and High Street
- The main church in the town is St George's Church, which is situated on the steep rise out of the town (Church Street) to the south of Clun Bridge.The nave includes Norman columns, but the entire church apart from the tower was rebuilt extensively by the Victorian architect G. E. Street in 1877
- Clun is a popular starting point for walkers who wish to explore the Shropshire Way, the Jack Mytton Way or the local circular walks. A walkers' car park is situated at the Memorial Hall.''

Also popular is the Green Man Festival which usually takes place over several days, the first week of May each year. The festival sees the Green Man usher in spring - something I took a look at here:
