Essa sorge su un tavolato calcareo declinante a nord-ovest verso il Golfo dell'Asinara e la pianura della Nurra, mentre a sud-est il terreno è prevalentemente collinare. Il territorio urbano e suburbano è caratterizzato da valli e gole che incidono profondamente l'altopiano su cui è adagiata la città. Coltivazioni ortive, oliveti e boschi circondano il centro urbano e costituiscono l'aspetto paesaggistico peculiare di tutto il settore orientale del territorio comunale.

A vette innevate che quasi precipitano in mare, fa riscontro il calore della natura mediterranea nel video NATURA PROTAGONISTA, NATURA PROTETTA (tempo: 9' 26''), quasi 10 minuti di video per camminare nei nostri Parchi che registrano nell'arco di pochi chilometri coste ricoperte dalla macchia mediterranea e montagne già appartenenti, per flora e fauna, agli ecosistemi alpini.
La Liguria è una palestra a cielo aperto, ricca di ambienti ed ecosistemi diversi, uno spazio straordinario alla portata di tutti, per tutte le gambe, per impiegare piacevolmente il tempo libero camminando. Nulla è impossibile in Liguria.
