Germany: Impressions of the Rur Eifel
The Rur - not to be confused with the Ruhr — is a river which flows through parts of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. It is a right (eastern) tributary to the river Meuse. About 90% of the river is in Germany.
The Rur rises in the Hautes Fagnes/Hohes Venn National Park, near the 696 meter-tall Signal de Botrange in Belgium at an altitude of 660m. South of Monschau it flows into Germany, through North Rhine-Westphalia. It flows first through the northern part of the Eifel hills. After 39 km it reaches the Rur Reservoir (Rurstausee), the second-largest artificial lake in Germany.
The Rur Dam (Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel) is a 77.2 metre high dam located in the southwestern part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It was built in 1939 and impounds the River Rur to form the Rur Reservoir (Rurstausee or Rursee) which is 7.83 km² in area. It lies within the districts of Aachen and Düren.
Heimbach is located on the river Rur, in the Eifel hills, approx. 20 km south of Düren. Heimbach is the city with the smallest number of residents in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Heimbach is a popular town for tourists. The most important objects of interest are the National Parc Eifel, the power house built in style of Art Nouveau, the water supply dam of Rur, the monastery of Mariawald and Hengebach castle.
Mariawald Abbey (Abtei Mariawald) is a monastery of the Trappists. Formally known as the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, located above the village of Heimbach.
The Castle of Hengebach was left a ruin until 1904 when restoration work began. Now restored, the castle is owned and operated as a tourist attraction by the city of Heimbach. The castle itself is located on a rock in the middle of Heimbach. Today it is used as a restaurant and a location for public events.
Adenau (Eifel)
Das 1000 jährige Adenau liegt in der Hocheifel und trägt den Beinamen Johanniterstadt, da dieser Orden hier im Mittelalter ansässig war.
Sehenswert ist der historische Marktplatz und die Pfarrkirche St. Johannes.
Bei Adenau befindet sich die Nordschleife des Nürburgringes, auf der Testfahrten und Hobby-Rennen ausgetragen werden.

Luis and I felt like being kid-ish today and went and explored a cave (...video coming soon) and rode these slides/mini roller coasters that you can control the speed by accelerating or slowing down. The yellow track (frankenrodel) was better than the red track (frankenbob) because it went faster! I could not stop laughing at how slow Luis was going and causing traffic since he has a fear of riding these things...he did pretty good!
