The best region to travel to in 2017 - Lonely Planet
Choquequirao, hidden across the deep Apurimac Valley, was the last Inca refuge from the conquistadors, and there’s a growing traveller buzz to see it ASAP. A cable car will squeal into life in 2017 (or later; bureaucratic feet are dragging), gliding up to 3000 visitors a day to the ruins in just 15 minutes. Visit in the early days, or take the four-day trek in Inca footsteps, and have a taste of Machu Picchu all to yourself. Lonely Planet author, Mark Johanson, tells us more.

The Amazon River, usually abbreviated to The Amazon, in South America is the largest river by discharge volume of water in the world and the second longest river.
The headwaters of the Apurímac River on Nevado Mismi had been considered for nearly a century as the Amazon’s most distant source, until a 2014 study found it to be the Cordillera Rumi Cruz at the headwaters of the Mantaro River in Peru.
The Mantaro and Apurímac join, and with other tributaries form the Ucayali River, which in turn meets the Marañón River upstream of Iquitos, Peru, to form what countries other than Brazil consider to be the main stem of the Amazon.
Brazilians call this section the Solimões River above its confluence with the Rio Negro to form what Brazilians call the Amazon at the Meeting of Waters at Manaus, the river's largest city.
At an average discharge of about 209,000 cubic metres per second - approximately 6,591 cubic kilometres per annum, greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined - the Amazon represents 20% of the global riverine discharge to the ocean.
The Amazon basin is the largest drainage basin in the world, with an area of approximately 7,050,000 square kilometres.
The portion of the river's drainage basin in Brazil alone is larger than any other river's basin.
The Amazon enters Brazil with only one-fifth of the flow it finally discharges into the Atlantic Ocean, yet already has a greater flow at this point than the discharge of any other river.
The Amazon River originated as a transcontinental river in the Miocene epoch between 11.8 million and 11.3 million years ago and took its present shape approximately 2.4 million years ago in the Early Pleistocene.
More than one-third of all known species in the world live in the Amazon rainforest.
There are over 3,000 species of fish currently recognised in the Amazon basin, with more being discovered every year.
In addition to the thousands of species of fish, the river supports crabs, algae, and turtles.
The anaconda is found in shallow waters in the Amazon basin.
One of the world's largest species of snake, the anaconda spends most of its time in the water with just its nostrils above the surface.
The caiman, which is related to alligators and other crocodilians, also inhabits the Amazon as do varieties of turtles.
