Praia de Mira and Barrinha lagoon aerial view
Originally a fishing village, Praia da Mira has become an increasingly popular holiday destination. Fishing continues to be the main activity here, using the traditional, brightly coloured boats with their long, curved bows, although tractors have now replaced the ox that were originally used for pulling in the nets. A few examples still remain of the typical fishermen’s wooden houses known as “palheiros”, although these are now interspersed with the cafés and restaurants that have sprung up to cater for the visitors who seek the gastronomic speciality that is, naturally, fresh fish.
The back of this fishing village gives on to a natural freshwater lagoon called the Barrinha. The differing landscape in the short distance that separates the coastal village from the inland town is remarkable: it progresses from the forceful waves of the Atlantic sea and the wide expanse of sand dunes to the lagoon and pine forests surrounding the town.

The Pena National Palace is a Romanticist palace located in Sintra, Portugal. The palace stands on the top of a hill above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.

AZENHAS DO MAR, situada num vale pitoresco, à beira mar e próximo da Serra de Sintra, com casario antigo, construído na encosta sul, e um interessante conjunto de piscinas escavadas na rocha, que datam dos anos 50 do século XX, é uma das praias mais apreciadas. A praia é dominada pelo das Azenhas do Mar que está construído sobre arribas que descem até ao Oceano. É um local a frequentar tanto no Verão como no Inverno, pela grandiosidade da vista proporcionada. A Azenhas do Mar é uma povoação muito antiga, cujas origens se perdem na memória dos tempos. AZENHAS DO MAR, situated in a picturesque valley near the sea and Sintra mountains, with old houses and an interesting set of pools dug into the rock from the 50's, is one of the most appreciated beaches. The beach has a viewpoint of Azenhas Sea which is built on cliffs that descend to the ocean. It's a great place to visit both summer and winter. Azenhas do Mar is a very ancient town, it's origins are lost in the memory of the times. Probably dating from the period of Arab occupation of the first water mills, that gave name to the town.*carl0spais*YouTube 2011

Almourol Castle aerial view
The Templar Almourol Castle is one of the most known and interesting to visit in Portugal because it stands in a small rocky island in the middle of Tagus River.
The origins of this fortification are a Lusitanian Castro conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century before Christ.
Stage of large battles and some legends of tragic passions (forbidden loves stories that even gave names to surrounding villages) the scenario is really adequate to these stories. The views from its towers (especially the taller one) are very beautiful and the island, with its luxurious vegetation, adds much to the mystery felt. The visit to this castle is made by crossing the river in a small old traditional boat, which circles around the island before leaving the passengers ashore.
