Malta, officially known as the Republic of Malta, is a Southern European island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It lies 80 km south of Italy, 284 km east of Tunisia, and 333 km north of Libya. Malta is one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries, at over 316 km2 with a population of about 475,000. Its capital is Valletta, which is the smallest national capital in the European Union by area at 0.8 km.2 Its largest town is Birkirkara, while its chief economic centre is Sliema. The official languages are Maltese and English, with Maltese also recognised as the national language. Maltese is the only Semitic language to be officially recognised in the European Union. Italian is also spoken by most of the population.
Malta has been inhabited since approximately 5900 BC. Its location in the centre of the Mediterranean has historically given it great strategic importance as a naval base, with a succession of powers having contested and ruled the islands, including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, French, and British. Most of these foreign influences have left some sort of mark on the country's ancient culture.
Malta became a British colony in 1815, serving as a critical way station for ships and the headquarters for the British Mediterranean Fleet. It played an important role in the Allied war effort during the Second World War, and was subsequently awarded the George Cross for its bravery in the face of an Axis siege, and the George Cross appears on Malta's national flag. The British Parliament passed the Malta Independence Act in 1964, giving Malta independence from the United Kingdom as the State of Malta, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and queen. The country became a republic in 1974. It has been a member state of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations since independence, and joined the European Union in 2004; it became part of the eurozone monetary union in 2008.
Malta has a long Christian legacy and its Archdiocese is claimed to be an apostolic see because Paul the Apostle was shipwrecked on Melita, according to Acts of the Apostles, which is now widely taken to be Malta. Catholicism is the official religion in Malta. Article 40 of the Constitution states that all persons in Malta shall have full freedom of conscience and enjoy the free exercise of their respective mode of religious worship.
Malta is a popular tourist destination with its warm climate, numerous recreational areas, and architectural and historical monuments, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni, Valletta, and seven megalithic temples which are some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world.

This was filmed over a number of Visits to Malta, I have tried to cover the whole islands, showing what there is to see in this really beautiful place. The people are really friendly, food and weather are Fantastic. Beaches are a little Limited, but there is Sooo much to see and do.

The total area of the island is 246 square kilometres (95 sq mi). The capital is Valletta, largest city is Qormi and the largest locality is Birkirkara. The island is made up of many small towns, which together form one Larger Urban Zone with a population of 452,515 (the majority of the population of the country) according to Eurostat. The landscape is characterised by low hills with terraced fields.

A weekend break in Malta and Gozo
A short video from our weekend break to Malta. We stayed in Sliema but during our trip managed to visit Valletta, St Julian's and Buggiba. We also took the ferry across to Gozo.
The ferry to Gozo cost us €4.65 (Dec 2016) each as foot passengers. You only pay this when you return from Gozo to Malta. The ferry crossing takes about 30 minutes and they run every 45 minutes.
Buses around Malta and Gozo cost €1.50 per person regardless of length of journey. However you can get off and back on within a 2 hour period on the same ticket. If you plan to stay for a longer period or wish to take more bus journeys then you can purchase unlimited travel cards. As we learnt the buses can get quite crowded and 'queuing' is often unheard of! Also try carry the correct change. We tried to board a bus at Cirkewwa (Gozo Ferry Boat Terminal) and pay with a €20 note for two passengers. The bus driver refused saying he didn't have the time to count out change and told us to get off! However a big thank you needs to go out to the kind hearted Maltese local on the bus who paid for us, so nice to see that there is still kindness in the world!
We visited in early December and as you can see the island was preparing for Christmas with beautiful decorations in the streets, especially in the capital Valletta.
Malta is truly a great place to visit whether it's just for the weekend, a short break or for a longer holiday, there's so much culture, history and beauty to explore!

Malta-Birkirkara: Feast of St Helen 2011
Video footage showing highlights of the feast in honor of St Helen held at Birkirkara, Malta, on August 21, 2011. This feast is held every year on the Sunday after August 18th.
Birkirkara is one of the oldest towns/villages in Malta. It was already a parish in 1402.
You'll hear the following hymns:
Processional Hymn - Uspicium Melioris Aevi (An omen of a better age) by Mro T. Galea played by the Duke of Connaught Band;
Inno di Gloria a Sant' Elena Imperatrice by Mro Raffaele Ricci, lyrics by Fr Gwann Bugeja, played by the Duke of Connaught Band. The Choir is Ite Ad Joseph, Tenor Andrew Sapiano, Baritone Joe Vella Bondin and the Maestro is Andrew Coleiro.
O Imperatrix Maxima composed by Mro Tommaso Galea in 1873 played by the Duke of Connaught Band;
Inno Di Gloria a Sant'Elena by Mro Busuttil played by St Elena Band;
Antiphon by Mro Bugeja.
Brief info about the Birkirkara Parish Church:
Work on the present Church began in 1727. It's majestic facade, is one of the most beautiful we have in Malta. St Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great and she is credited with finding the True Cross of Christ. She died in the year 330 AD.
The majestic statue of St Helena was carved in wood by Salvu Psaila in 1837. It was donated to the church by the local patriot Vincenzo Borg, who rose to fame by his leadership during the two-year blockade of the French after the 1798 insurrection. The statue is solemnly carried in procession twice a year: on the third of May in commemoration of the finding of the True Cross by this Saint and on her feast-day, one Sunday after the liturgical feast of 18th of August. This is the only procession in Malta that is held on a morning.
The large bell found in the left hand side belfry tower is Malta's largest church bell and the third largest in the world.
The parish has two band clubs: The Duke of Connaught's Own which was established in 1865 and Għaqda Mużikali Sant'Elena, established in 1919.
The background music features segments of the two hymns in honor of St Helena and are played by the two band clubs. The Hymn used by The Duke of Connaught's was composed by Mro Raffaele Rizzi and the one used by Sant'Elena Band Club, Inno di gloria, was composed by Mro Busuttil. At the end, you'll also hear a segment of the Antifona which was composed by Mro Buġeja.
St Helena's Feast is another beautiful feast that adds color to the Maltese Culture.
