Maryland Campground Makes Roughing It Easy
In the current economic downturn, camping is an affordable alternative for travelers. But the investment in camping equipment can be expensive. For travelers who aren't prepared for the great outdoors, one campground on the outskirts of the nation's capital provides a special service. VOA's Susan Logue reports:
ENCHANTED FOREST AT CLARK'S ELIOAK FARM FULL TOUR & VLOG - Ellicott City, MD
The Enchanted Forest was a fairy tale forest theme park in Ellicott City, MD. It closed in 1989 and was abandoned until the mid 2000s when the people at Clark's Elioak Farm decided to move all the fiberglass sculptures to their petting zoo farm. The park is alive again thanks to their efforts. Join us as we explore this restored and revived version of the once beloved roadside attraction.

We're traveling the northeast US to explore as many unique, interesting, fun or beautiful points of interest we can find. These include roadside attractions, museums, amusement/theme parks, fairs & carnivals, events/festivals, nature sights, hiking trails, nice towns, markets & more. Our first area to cover will be the central Pennsylvania area and places near the Mason-Dixon PA/MD state line. We hope to eventually travel the entire east coast and the entire country documenting as many things worth seeing and doing as possible. So please subscribe and like our videos so we can get there!
Drive to Elk Neck MD (November 20 2016)
A drive to Elk Neck State Park MD on an incredibly windy day!! Something I had from before but didn't post yet. Some nice fall colors left over too.
We went looking for another vantage point to catch trains crossing the Susquehanna, and the beach at this park is in direct line with the river and Havre de Grace. Well, we found one...but way too windy to get out and set up! Tried shooting from inside the car, just to come away with something. Almost impossible standing outside...too much of a risk being grabbed by a twister and winding up in Oz!!
Then, a quick stop at Turkey Point. Not as windy as the last location, but still too uncomfortable to walk to the lighthouse there. But I will one day.
Then, the drive home-featuring classic photos of a once almost dead-empty Interstate 95.
Spook Hill - Lake Wales, FL
For some reason guidebooks and websites list Spook Hill as something to do/see in Lake Wales, FL. My wife and I visited Bok Tower Sanctuary (which is actually very cool) then decided to stop by Spook Hill. The idea is that you drive to a certain point on this road and your car will roll against gravity. Watch the video and you'll see this is the dumbest thing ever. The hill you pull up to has about a 15 degree incline - of course you're going to roll backward. Now, if your car rolled forward, that would be something to see. But backward? Dumbest attraction I've ever been to.
Spook Hill, Florida (1974)
Kerry Decker takes a trip to Lake Wales, Florida and visits Spook Hill. This isn't your typical pay-at-the-gate attraction. In fact, there is no admission charge — it's free! Some might not even call it an attraction, but don't say that to the locals of Lake Wales, Florida. Spook Hill is proudly recognized by the town.
The thrill of the attraction is your vehicle seems to coast uphill. Is it a weird phenomenon, optical illusion or the unrest of spooky spirits? Well, the legend is that it's spooky spirits.
A sign was later erected that states, Many years ago an Indian village on Lake Wales was plagued by raids of a huge gator. The Chief, a great warrior, killed the gator in a battle that created a small lake. The chief was buried on the north side. Pioneer mail riders first discovered their horses laboring down hill, thus naming it Spook Hill. When the road was paved, cars coasted up hill. Is this the gator seeking revenge, or the chief still trying to protect his land?
Armed with an early model of a Kodak Ektasound Super 8 camera, Kerry visits the area to test the legend for himself.
A sign bearing the Legend of Spook Hill still stands sentry over the area. The white line, although faded, marks the spot on the one-way street where you should stop and take your vehicle out of gear. Then, it happens... your vehicle begins to roll... uphill!
It's got to be the spirits!
