Caerleon is a suburban town and community, situated on the River Usk in the northern outskirts of the city of Newport, Wales. Caerleon is a site of archaeological importance, being the location of a notable Roman legionary fortress, Isca Augusta, and an Iron Age hillfort. The Wales National Roman Legion Museum and Roman Baths Museum are in Caerleon close to the remains of Isca Augusta. The town also has strong literary associations, as Geoffrey of Monmouth makes Caerleon one of the most important cities in Britain in his Historia Regum Britanniæ, and Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote Idylls of the King while staying there.
Caerleon is a site of considerable archaeological importance as the location of a Roman legionary fortress or castra. It was the headquarters for Legio II Augusta from about 75 to 300 AD, and on the hill above was the site of an Iron Age hillfort. Substantial excavated Roman remains can be seen, including the military amphitheatre, thermae (baths) and barracks occupied by the Roman Legion. In August 2011 the remains of a Roman harbour were discovered in Caerleon.
During the Welsh Revolt in 1402 Rhys Gethin, General for Owain Glyndŵr, took Caerleon Castle together with those of Newport, Cardiff, Llandaff, Abergavenny, Caerphilly and Usk by force. This was probably the last time Caerleon castle was ruined, though the walls were still standing in 1537 and the castle ruins only finally collapsed in 1739 - their most obvious remnant is the Round Tower at the Hanbury Arms public house. The Tower is a Grade II* listed building
The old wooden Caerleon Bridge was destroyed in a storm in 1779 and the present stone version was erected in the early 19th century. Until the Victorian development of the downstream docks at Newport Docks, Caerleon acted as the major port on the River Usk. The wharf was located on the right bank, to the west of today's river bridge which marked the limit of navigability for masted ships. A tinplate works and mills were established on the outskirts of the town, in Ponthir, around this time, and Caerleon expanded to become almost joined to Newport.
A plaque on the Mynde wall in High Street references the Newport Rising of 1839 in which John Frost of Newport was a prominent figure in the Chartist movement. John Jenkins, owner of Mynde House and owner of Ponthir Tin Plate works, built the wall to keep demonstrators out. The name of the former Drovers' Arms on Goldcroft Common bore witness to the ancient drovers' road on the old road from Malpas. It is thought that the common itself was once the site of a cattle market.
Caerleon is centred around a small common. Goldcroft Common is the only remaining of the seven commons of Caerleon. Most of the small businesses of Caerleon are near the common as is the Town Hall which has a World War I and World War II memorial garden. Caerleon library is located within the Town Hall and is associated with Newport Central Library. The intersection of High Street and Cross Street is known as The Square.
Buildings of note are Saint Cadoc's Church, the National Roman Legion Museum, the Roman Baths Museum, The Mynde, The Priory Hotel, Caerleon Catholic Church and Rectory, Caerleon Endowed School, the Round Tower, the Toll House at Caerleon Bridge, The Malt House hotel, former University of South Wales Caerleon Campus and St Cadoc's Hospital. The historic remains of the Roman Legionary Fortress Isca Augusta is popular with tourists and school parties and there is a marked heritage trail in the town. The Millennium Wildlife Garden is a small nature garden on the banks of the River Usk. The hilltop vantage point at Christchurch provides panoramic views of the Vale of Usk and Bristol Channel.
The municipal playing fields are at Caerleon Broadway and a children's playground is in Cold Bath Road. Private sport and leisure facilities are available at the Celtic Manor. Caerleon has a few restaurants, cafés and take-away food outlets and many public houses that have restaurant facilities. The Ffwrrwm is a small specialist shopping courtyard with an eclectic display of sculpture. Caerleon also has its own station of Gwent Police and an active community policing presence.

Newport is a cathedral and university city and unitary authority area in south east Wales. Newport is located on the River Usk close to its confluence with the Severn Estuary, approximately 12 miles northeast of Cardiff.
Newport has been a port since medieval times, when the first Newport Castle was built by the Normans. The town outgrew the earlier Roman town of Caerleon, immediately upstream, and gained its first charter in 1314. It grew significantly in the 19th century, when its port became the focus of coal exports from the eastern valleys of South Wales. Until the rise of Cardiff from the 1850s, Newport was Wales' largest coal-exporting port. It was the site of the last large-scale armed insurrection in Britain, the Newport Rising of 1839 led by the Chartists.
During the 20th century, when the docks declined in importance, Newport remained an important manufacturing and engineering centre. Newport was granted city status in 2002. Newport hosted the Ryder Cup in 2010. The city was the venue for the 2014 NATO summit. Newport is the largest urban area within the historic county boundaries of Monmouthshire and the preserved county of Gwent. The City of Newport, which includes some surrounding rural areas as well as the built up area, is governed by Newport City Council.
The M4 motorway comes within a mile (1.6 km) of the city centre, and Newport can be accessed from six junctions (from 24–28 inclusive). The Great Western main railway line also passes through the heart of the city, stopping at Newport railway station. Newport is well linked with nearby Cardiff, with approximately six rail and five bus services between the cities every hour. The Old Green Interchange is an elevated roundabout over the A4042 (Heidenheim Drive) at the western end of Newport Bridge. Newport's pedestrianised High Street runs southwest from the interchange through Westgate Square to the pedestrianised Commercial Street. Queensway passes Newport railway station and links the Old Green Interchange to Newport Civic Centre via Clytha Park Road.

Usk is a small town in Monmouthshire, south-east Wales, situated 10 miles northeast of Newport. It is located on the River Usk, which is spanned by an arched stone bridge at the western entrance to the town.
A castle above the town overlooks the ancient crossing point. It developed as a small market town, with some industry including the making of Japanware, and a notable prison. In recent years Usk has become known for its history of success in Britain in Bloom competitions, winning the Large Village award in 2005.
The first stone bridge at Usk, replacing one of wood, was built around 1750 to the designs of Welsh architect William Edwards. Unlike the bridge downstream at Caerleon, it withstood the great floods of 1795. The bridge was strengthened and widened in 1836, but two of its arches were destroyed by floods in 1877 and later replaced.
From the late 18th century, Usk became well known for the high quality of its japanware, a process of decorating metals by applying a lacquer to tinplate. The process, known as Pontypool japan, was first developed in the west by Thomas Allgood of nearby Pontypool and was taken on in Usk in 1763 by his grandsons Thomas and Edward Allgood. Products from Usk included tin trays, jardinières, and coal boxes. However output declined with changing fashions in the 19th century, and the last Usk japanware was produced in 1860 on the site of what is now Bunning's builders' merchants.
Usk was twinned with the German town Graben-Neudorf in Baden-Württemberg in 1980. Over the past few years there have been numerous visits between the two towns, with the Usk Youth Brass Band making its most recent visit in autumn 2006. In 2006 the colour scheme of Usk in Bloom was based on those within the crests of both Usk and Graben-Neudorf.

Laugharne is a town in Carmarthenshire, Wales, lying on the estuary of the River Tâf. It is known for having been the home of Dylan Thomas from 1949 until his death in 1953, and is thought to have been an inspiration for the fictional town of Llareggub in Under Milk Wood.
A castle, known originally as the Castle of Abercorran, existed in Laugharne before the Norman Conquest and belonged to the princes of South Wales. Henry II visited it in 1172 on his return from Ireland and made peace with Prince Rhys of Dinefwr. Through the marriage of Prince Rhys' daughter, the castle passed to Sir Guy de Brian, who had been Lord High Admiral of England. His daughter Elizabeth inherited the castle and married Owen Laugharne of St. Bride's who gave his name to the castle.
Laugharne Corporation is an almost unique institution, and, together with the City of London Corporation, the last surviving mediæval corporation in the United Kingdom. The Corporation was established in 1291 by Sir Guy de Brian (Gui de Brienne), a Marcher Lord. The Corporation is presided over by the Portreeve, wearing his traditional chain of gold cockle shells, (one added by each portreeve, with his name and date of tenure on the reverse), the Aldermen, and the body of Burgesses.
The famous Charter of Laugharne, which the corporation was founded by, came about during a tempestuous time in local Welsh history. Henry II (Plantagenet) held a parley with Rhys ap Gruffydd at Laugharne Castle in 1172. After Henry’s death, Rhys seized St. Clears, Llanstephan and Laugharne, and then lost them again to the crown.
Attractions in the town include the 12th-century Laugharne Castle, the town hall and the birdlife of the estuary. Architecturally, Laugharne contains many fine examples of Georgian townhouses, including Great House and Castle House, both grade II* listed buildings, with a scattering of earlier vernacular cottages. There are a number of landmarks in Laugharne connected with the poet and writer Dylan Thomas. These include the Dylan Thomas Birthday Walk, which was the setting for the work Poem in October, and The Boathouse, where he lived with his family from 1949 to 1953; it is now a museum.
Each year in the spring, Laugharne hosts a three-day arts festival, the Laugharne Weekend. The festival's was inaugurated in 2007 featuring writers such as Niall Griffiths and Patrick McCabe. Headline performers since then have included Ray Davies, Will Self, Howard Marks and Patti Smith. Although the town's Millennium Hall was used as the main venue, smaller events were hosted by local venues including Dylan Thomas's Boathouse.

Roman Army Museum, Hexham, Northumberland. Hadrian's Wall.
The world-conquering Roman Army was one of the most effective fighting forces in history and it made the growth of the Roman Empire possible. The Roman Army Museum, is an extremely visual, colourful and interactive museum which covers all aspects of the Roman Legions and really brings the Roman Army to life.
The Romans had invaded Britain in AD43 and after years of conquest, in AD122, the Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of a wall, to defend the Empire from the Barbarians from the north and to control trade. The legions of the Roman Army stationed in Britain built Hadrian’s wall and would then defend it for the next 300 years. Hadrian’s Wall is now a World Heritage site and is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. The museum is a useful stop if you are walking the wall, located very close to Hexham/Greenhead. It also offers a nice little café, mainly offering cakes and sandwiches.
The museum has something on offer for everyone.
For the adults:
• The excellent 3D movie of Hadrian’s Wall, “Edge of Empire” has some truly stunning aerial views of the wall and also offers a great chance to sit down in the comfort of the cinema, especially if you have been walking the wall!
• The realistic full-size figures displaying the various uniforms of the Roman army are really impressive.
• An informative and well-made film is projected in the main gallery, visually explains the structure of the Roman Army.
• A selection of fascinating original artefacts, replica helmets, weapons, shields and armour. Must see item, an original Roman helmet crest, the only one ever to be discovered!
For the younger visitors:
• All of the above.
• A Roman classroom with a holographic tutor.
• A Roman Centurion recruiting officer welcoming new recruits.
• Interactive hands on items.
The museum does contain original Roman artefacts, but if this is the main thing that you are interested in and only intend to visit one site then you would be better visiting Vindolanda.
Location – Roman Army Museum, Carvoran House, Brampton, Cumbria, CA8 7JB. The museum is perfectly located just a few minutes walk from the Walltown visitor centre, along the Hadrian’s Wall path and nearby the village of Greenhead, for overnight accommodation. It is also on the AD122 tourist bus route. The museum is actually located next to the site of the Carvoran Roman Fort, although no visible
remains exist.
Money saving tip - Buy a combined ticket with Vindolanda, if you intend to visit both places and save money. Travel by bus AD122 to the museum and save 10% on the cost of admission.
