LANZAROTE - GRACIOSA - CANARY ISLANDS - SUMMER 2016
LANZAROTE
Lanzarote, a Spanish island, is the easternmost of the autonomous Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 125 km (78 mi) off the coast of Africa and 1,000 km (621 mi) from the Iberian Peninsula. Covering 845.94 square kilometers (327 sq mi), it is the fourth largest of the islands in the archipelago. With 141,938 inhabitants, Lanzarote is the third most populous island of the Canary Islands, after Tenerife and Gran Canaria. In the center-west of the island is the Timanfaya National Park, which is one of the main attractions of Lanzarote. Its capital is Arrecife.
The first recorded name for the island, given by Angelino Dulcert, was Insula de Lanzarotus Marocelus, after the Genovese navigator Lancelotto Malocello, from which the modern name is derived. The island's name in the native language was Tyterogaka or Tytheroygaka, which may mean one that is all ochre (referring to the island's predominant colour).
GRACIOSA
Graciosa Island or commonly La Graciosa ( in spanish means graceful) is a volcanic island in the Canary Islands of Spain, located 2 km (1.2 mi) north of the island of Lanzarote across the strait named El Río. It was formed by the Canary hotspot. The island is part of the Chinijo Archipelago and the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park (Parque Natural del Archipiélago Chinijo). It is administrated by the municipality of Teguise. The only two settlements are Caleta de Sebo in the southeastern part of the island and summer-residence Casas de Pedro Barba.
The population is about 700. Tourism is the main industry along with fishing. Every year, tourists flock to the island for its tempered climate and its sandy volcanic coasts. The island has a school, lyceum, post office, supermarkets, medical center, pharmacy, a Bankia bank branch (in danger of elimination as of September 2013 but still there in February 2016), port, beaches, bar-restaurants and a square.
Streets and roads on La Graciosa are unpaved sand. Motor vehicles are strictly prohibited and limited to a handful of licensed vehicles for special purposes. Access to the Island is by a 35-minute ferry crossing from Orzola on Lanzarote to the harbour in the village. There is a campsite on the Island situated on Playa del Salado at the western edge of Caleta del Sebo.

La Graciosa beaches
La Graciosa's beaches are for sure the islands biggest attraction. Many consider them to be the best beaches in the Canary Islands. Untouched and solitary, they are often devoid of people -- especially outside of the main summer holiday months as well as the early morning and late afternoon hours before/after the first and last ferry leaves the port.
If you only have time to visit one beach, we suggest you visit Playa de Las Conchas, the most beautiful beach on the island. It has also been rated in the top ten best beaches in Europe. Besides everything else this magnificent beach impresses with the contrasting colours: half a kilometre strip of immaculate white sand, the turquoise sea with white waves of majestic hight, the sun-golden Montaña Clara on the horizon and the red mountain of Montaña Bermeja in the background sprinkled by little vegetation. Please note, you will not be able to swim here due to currents and high waves. Read more: golagraciosa.net
La Graciosa - the most beautiful, romantic and undiscovered Canary Island
a Graciosa - the best Canary island for beaches
La Graciosa's beaches are for sure the islands biggest attraction. Many consider them to be the best beaches in the Canary Islands. Untouched and solitary, they are often devoid of people -- especially outside of the main summer holiday months as well as the early morning and late afternoon hours before/after the first and last ferry leaves the port.
Some of the beaches are well protected from the waves of the open sea by bay or by lava stone reefs and thus provide safe bathing, even for small children. Please note that naturism is very common here. Read more: golagraciosa.net
