Established in medieval Moldavia, Căpriana is situated in a picturesque forested area once called Codrii Lăpușnei.

The first significant reference dates from a document issued in 1429 that gave Căpriana the status of royal monastery on behalf of Alexander the Good.

In this deed the holy abode was referred to as mănăstirea de la Vâșnovăț unde este egumen Chiprian (the monastery of Vâșnovăț where the hegumen is Chiprian) and was given in the possession of Alexander's wife - princess Marena.

After a period of decay, the monastery was rebuilt at the behest of Petru Rareș, from 1542 to 1545.

4. CURCHI MONASTERY (~1773)
-IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1773-1775 AND BECAME ONE OF THE RICHEST AND LARGEST MONASTERIES IN MOLDOVA.
-HAS THE HIGHEST DOME IN MOLDOVA, RISING TO A HEIGHT OF 57 METERS (187 FT)

5. TIPOVA MONASTERY (~1776)
- BIGGEST ORTHODOX CAVE MONASTERY IN EASTERN EUROPE
- IN ANCIENT TIMES (IV-III C. BC) A GETO-DACIAN FORTRESS STOOD IN THE GROUNDS. ITS REMAINS ARE STILL VISIBLE.

6. SAHARNA MONASTERY (~1777)
- EXCEPTIONAL PANORAMIC VIEW OF ROCKY HILLS AND FORESTS WITH 30 CASCADES & WATERFALLS
-IMPORTANT ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE WITH THE REMAINS FROM THE IRON AGE (X-VIII C. BC)

7. METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL, CHISINAU (~1830)
- THE PRINCIPAL CATHEDRAL OF THE MOLDOVAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

- THE BELL TOWER WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1836, BUT WAS DESTROYED AFTER WWII AND REBUILT IN 1997

In this episode, David takes us along on his tour of one of Moldova’s top attractions: the biggest wine cellar in the world, Milestii Mici. It actually holds the Guinness World Record for containing the largest wine collection and having the biggest cellar of any other winery in the world!

Here, David takes us through the extensive network of tunnels, wine collection, and tasting room at Milestii Mici.

There are over 200 kilometers of underground tunnels where the wine is stores. Each tunnel passage, or “street” is named after a different type of wine. David’s guide Natalia explains that the wine collection holds over 1.5 million bottles of wine!

Milestii Mici was founded in 1969 to store, preserve and mature high-quality wines. The cellars are comprised of 70% red, 20% white and 10% dessert wines.

Once the tour of the property is wrapped up, it’s time for the good stuff – to taste the wines. David suggests booking a tasting lunch in advance to taste the wines with some typical Moldovan food and live folk music.

Milestii Mici is located only 30 minutes south of Chisinau, which makes it a great day trip option from the capital.

When in Moldova, a visit to Milestii Mici is a must!
