Carcassonne, a hilltop town in southern France’s Languedoc area, is famous for its medieval citadel, La Cité, with numerous watchtowers and double-walled fortifications. The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman times, with major additions made in the 13th and 14th centuries. Château Comtal, a 12th-century castle within the Cité, offers archaeological exhibits and a tour of the inner ramparts.

Carcassonne was demilitarised under Napoleon and the Restoration, and the fortified cité of Carcassonne fell into such disrepair that the French government decided that it should be demolished. A decree to that effect that was made official in 1849 caused an uproar. The antiquary and mayor of Carcassonne, Jean-Pierre Cros-Mayrevieille, and the writer Prosper Mérimée, the first inspector of ancient monuments, led a campaign to preserve the fortress as a historical monument. Later in the year the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, already at work restoring the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, was commissioned to renovate the place.
In 1853, work began with the west and southwest walls, followed by the towers of the porte Narbonnaise and the principal entrance to the cité. The fortifications were consolidated here and there, but the chief attention was paid to restoring the roofing of the towers and the ramparts, where Viollet-le-Duc ordered the destruction of structures that had encroached against the walls, some of them of considerable age. Viollet-le-Duc left copious notes and drawings on his death in 1879, when his pupil Paul Boeswillwald and, later, the architect Nodet continued the rehabilitation of Carcassonne.
Another bridge, Pont Marengo, crosses the Canal du Midi and provides access to the railway station. Lac de la Cavayère has been created as a recreational lake and is about five minutes from the city centre. Further sights include: Basilica of St. Nazaire and St. Celse , Carcassonne Cathedral , Church of St. Vincent .

Carcassonne is a fortified French town in the Aude department, of which it is the prefecture, in the Region of Occitanie.
Carcassonne is located in the south of France, about 80 kilometres east from the city of Toulouse.
Its strategic location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea has been known since the neolithic era.
Inhabited since the Neolithic period, Carcassonne is located in the Aude plain between historic trade routes, linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean sea and the Massif Central to the Pyrénées.
Its strategic importance was quickly recognized by the Romans who occupied its hilltop until the demise of the Western Roman Empire and was later taken over in the fifth century by the Visigoths who founded the city.
Its strategic location led successive rulers to expand its fortifications until the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659.
The fortified city itself consists essentially of a concentric design of two outer walls with 53 towers and barbicans to prevent attack by siege engines.
The castle itself possesses its own drawbridge and ditch leading to a central keep.
The walls consist of towers built over quite a long period.
One section is Roman and is notably different from the medieval walls with the tell-tale red brick layers and the shallow pitch terracotta tile roofs.
One of these towers housed the Catholic Inquisition in the 13th century and is still known as The Inquisition Tower.
Carcassonne was the first fortress to use hoardings in times of siege.
Temporary wooden ramparts would be fitted to the upper walls of the fortress through square holes beneath the rampart itself.
It provided protection to defenders on the wall and allowed defenders to go out past the wall to drop projectiles on attackers at the wall beneath.

Carcassonne is a city in south-west France that is best known for its UNESCO World Heritage listed walled city. It can be visited comfortably as a day trip.
Carcassonne is divided into two main parts:
The Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress settlement with a history that exceeds two and a half thousand years. Picturesque fortifications (over 3 km of walls with 52 towers, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was partly shot here) were reconstructed by Viollet-le-Duc in 19th century (like with most monuments reconstructed in that time authenticity was not the main objective). It is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The town centre, known as the ville basse (literally 'lower city'), where the other sights and hotels are located.
Perched on a rocky hilltop and bristling with zigzag battlements, stout walls and spiky turrets, the fortified city of Carcassonne looks like something out of a children’s storybook when it's seen from afar. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997, it’s most people’s idea of the perfect medieval castle. La Cité, as the old walled town is now known, attracts over four million visitors every year, peaking in high summer. Time your visit for late in the day (or better still for spring and autumn) to truly appreciate the old town's medieval charm.
The Cité historic fortress (built upon ruins predating Christianity) that was featured in the movie Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves. It is also told that the Cité inspired Walt Disney for the Castle of his Sleeping Beauty. You can enter the Cité through one of its four gates: Porte Narbonnaise (see picture, common entrance when you arrive by car).

Le Pont Vieux (the old bridge) that replaced the medieval structure previously built upstream, where the roman bridge lay, dates back to the early 14th century. Work was already underway in 1315, and was probably completed no earlier than 1320. A special tax was evied to cover the expense.
The twelve, full-centre arches of the Carcassonne bridge have opening diameters of unequal lengths ranging from 10 to 14 metres. This is evidence that the work was completed arch after arch, depending on the resources. The bridge was divided in two by a stone arch based on an upstream and downstream cutwater, which marked the limit between the two communities of the Cité and the Lower Town. In this spot were signed peace treaties following internal divisions which often stirred the population of both towns of Carcassonne.
The appearance of the bridge changed only after 1820. In those days, some fine railings were still visible there, flanked with two elegant sidewalks. We know for a fact that two arches collapsed in 1436, but in addition to repairs performed then, several other sections were reworked in 1559 and even later, without the bridge being deprived, however, of its primitive appearance. It was the restoration of 1820 that most altered its former shape.
It was originally defended on the left bank by a huge headblock which surrounded nearly all of today's suburb. On the Cité side, it was connected to the fortress defences through a line of flanked curtain walls. In 1999, a study was conducted by the Town of Carcassonne and the Architect from the Monuments de France in connection with the French public services. A project to rehabilitate the eastern end of the Old Bridge and the entry to the rue Trivalle was elaborated.
The 13th arch located east of the bridge has been cleared; the ramp between rue de la Barbacane and rue Trivalle, as well as the area between the front of the buildings and the garden of Pierre et Maria Sire have been surfaced and graded, thus clearing the ground for an esplanade used as a car-park in the shade of freshly planted plane trees. When you enter the bridge, the chapel of Notre-Dame de la Santé (Our Lady of Good Health), is the only remaining trace of the Town's oldest hospital. Although restored on the outside and reworked on the inside, it remains a fine specimen of 15th century architecture.

Annecy is the largest city of Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France.
It lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35 kilometers south of Geneva.
Nicknamed the Pearl of French Alps in Raoul Blanchard's monograph describing its location between lake and mountains, the city controls the northern entrance to the lake gorge.
Due to the lack of available land, its resident population has remained stagnant, with 52,029 inhabitants living within the city limits in 2013.
However, its urban area, with 221,000 inhabitants, is on the 5th regional position, just behind the Geneva-Annemasse urban area, which counts 292,000 inhabitants in the northern department.
Switching from counts of Geneva’s dwelling in the 13th century, to counts of Savoy’s in the 14th century, the city became the capital of the Savoy province in 1434 during the prerogative of Genevois-Nemours until 1659.
Its role increased in 1536, during the Calvinist Reformation of Geneva, while the bishop took refuge in Annecy.
St Francis de Sales gave Annecy its role of advanced citadel of the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
The annexation of Savoy will link the city to France in 1860.
Sometimes called Venice of the Alps, this idyllic and touristic representation comes from its two canals and the Thiou river lying through the old city and whose initial role was to protect the city and to empower its handicrafts.
The city experienced an industrial development in the 19th century with silk manufacturing.
Some of its industrial legacy remains today within the head offices of NTN-SNR bearings, Salomon, Entremont and Dassault Aviation.
Since the end of the 19th century, Annecy has developed as a tourist center with the proximity of the lake, winter resorts and the renovation of its castle, inaugurated with the opening of its fine art museum in 1956.
The municipal environmental policy managed to keep 40.3% of green spaces and the city and was awarded the Golden Flower in 2015, given to the nine most-flowered French cities.
Since 1960 Annecy has been the organiser of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, hosted at the Bonlieu Cultural Centre.
It has also been a growing educational center since the establishment of the University of Savoy in 1973.
