Hotel room tour: Blue Jay Lodge, in South Lake Tahoe, Californua
Had most of the things I like in a hotel/motel; fridge, microwave, comfy bed, full-length mirror. The location can't be beaten for the money. Walking distance to everything; casinos, heavenly, shops, restaurants. Breakfast was not impressive though.

Family resort review in Lake Tahoe | Grand Residences by Marriott
We made a short visit to South Lake Tahoe summer of 2017 and stayed at one of the Marriott properties at the Heavenly mountain resort. The location was perfect for families as it was close to restaurants, a large grocery, the gondola and the lake. We also found it to be very child friendly with the nearby family activity zone, mini golf and a movie theatre.
We booked a one bedroom residence that was about 750 sq. ft. It had a king bedroom connected to another room with a kitchen, a large living area with a sofa bed and two full bathrooms. Fantastic space for a family with 3 energetic kids or for big groups. We also had access to the Marriott Timber lodge. That hotel had an indoor children's activity centre with books, a playhouse and a mini rock climbing wall. A separate space was also available for older kids.
After a full day exploring Tahoe and spending time at the lake, it was nice to come back to the beautiful outdoor pool and hot tub. Great way to spend a summer evening.

The Pines, Glenbrook Nevada Lakefront Estate on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe
Glenbrook, Nevada - 210 miles east of San Francisco, 45 miles southwest of Reno, 20 minutes to Incline Village, 9 miles north of Stateline, Nevada. The Pines is located just south of Glenbrook. Video 5 of 13 covering the entire trip around Lake Tahoe. Done with a GoPro Hero II camera and my custom designed 2.5 ft. tall roof top robotic camera mount. I have complete control over camera start/stop, a recording indicator, panning through 180 degrees and position feedback to show where the camera is pointing.
Driving along Highway 50 from Kingsbury Grade in Nevada we come to the biggest casinos and hotels around the lake. First are the Montbleu and Horizon casino/ hotels. Then comes Harrah's and Harvey's. These last two go back many years- in fact they started in their current form about 1957. Actualy, Harveys Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gambling Hall started in 1944 in a different location in South Lake Tahoe. A little known fact is that Harrahs used to be located where Harveys is today. Harrah sold the property to Harveys and moved across the street and opened Harrah's casino and hotel in the location many know today.
The other two casinos mentioned first have been operated under many different names through the years. The Horizon started out as the Sahara Tahoe, then years ago it became the High Sierra. The Montbleu started out as the Park Tahoe, then later became Caesars Tahoe and then later became just Caesars. In 2006 it began operating under the Montbleu name.
The rest of the trip towards the Y at the Highway 50 / 89 junction passes by many businesses. This stretch of the roadway is one of my least favorite sections. In winter time, post snowstorms, this part can be extremely dusty which really bothers my nose and allergies. This is due to the road crews sanding the roadway to maintain vehicle traction during the slippery times It's often extremely dusty!
About 22,000 people live full time in South Lake Tahoe, by far the largest community around the Lake. It is in El Dorado County and the county seat it over the summit (Highway 50) in Placerville. This has caused friction in the past because the county is administered from Placerville, which is far smaller than South Lake Tahoe. In fact Placerville is about half the size of South Lake Tahoe! Somehow it's worked over the years despite this strange situation. Although I believe in certain periods re-location of the county government was considered.
In June of 2007 there was a horrible fire in the South lake region called the Angora fire. 3000 acres were burned and 275 structures were lost, 254 of those were homes. The census in 2000 showed a couple more thousand people than the 2012 census. Maybe a fair number of people left after the Angora fire. And in recent years the economy has taken its toll. It was definitely the worst fire in South Lake Tahoe history.
