Places to see in ( Caserta - Italy ) Casertavecchia
Casertavecchia, a frazione of Caserta, is an Italian medieval village that lies at the foot of the Tifatini Mountains located 10 km north-east of the City of Caserta at an altitude of approximately 401 meters. Its name translated from Italian means Old Caserta.
The origins of Casertavecchia are uncertain, but according to the Benedictine monk, Erchempert, in Ystoriola Langobardorum Beneventi degentium, the village was founded in 861 AD. The previous Roman town was called Casam Irtam (from the Latin meaning home village located above). The village was initially conquered and ruled by the Lombards. Subsequent Saracen depredations led to the fortified mountain village becoming the Bishopric for the province.
Under Norman domination, the village began the construction of its cathedral, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. During this period it was controlled by the Swabian, Riccardo di Lauro (1232–1266), who increased the political power of the town. The Aragons conquered the village in 1442 which began its long and gradual decline in importance. Eventually, Casertavecchia would host only the local seminary and the Bishop's seat. Under the rule of the Bourbons, major construction began taking place in the city of Caserta. By 1842 political rule had entirely moved to the great palace in the larger city, with the Casertan diocese finally relocating from Casertavecchia to Caserta.
On October 1, 1860, in the battle of the Volturna, the Neapolitans made one of their last stands of the battle in front of Caserta Vecchia, 400–500 Neapolitan soldiers surrendering to Giuseppi Garibaldi in one of the decisive battles of the Second Italian Independence War. In 1960, Casertavecchia was designated an Italian National Monument. Today, the village is primarily a tourist destination. Sites worth visiting consist of the church, its bell tower, and the remains of the original castle. Visitors can dine in local pizzerias with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Places to see in ( Caserta - Italy ) Duomo di Casertavecchia
Places to see in ( Caserta - Italy ) Duomo di Casertavecchia
The church of San Michele Arcangelo , also known as the Duomo , is the main place of Catholic worship in Casertavecchia , until 1841, the cathedral of the diocese of Caserta. The church, dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo , stands in a medieval village of Lombard origin located on the top of a hill, at 401 meters on the slopes of the Tifatini Mountains . The village is a hillside hamlet located about 10 kilometers from the capital and is now called Caserta old or Casertavecchia but in the Middle Ages simply Caserta (originally Casa Hirta ) before the name passed to the center in the plains (before called Torri, then Caserta new and finally Caserta).
Casertavecchia was an important fortified center, seat of a Longobard county, then Norman, and seat of diocese, after the destruction, in the early Middle Ages, of the ancient Episcopal see of Calatia (near the present Maddaloni ). Documented as a castrum already around 861, it became a possession of the Norman Riccardo di Aversa in 1062 . Thus began the period of Norman domination that saw the urban development of the town, the creation of the diocese and the rise of the cathedral.
The church represents an exemplary episode of the Romanesque period in Campania as it presents at the same time influences coming from Sicily with others coming from the Romanesque and from the paleochristian tradition. Thus we find characters and above all decorative elements derived from the complex architectural style present in the Romanic of Sicily in which Norman elements coexisted with other Arabs and Byzantines and whose influences arrived in Campania through Amalfi. Other elements, for example the characters of the sculptural kit, are instead coming from the north or from the Apulian Romanesque.
The constructive scheme seems instead derived from a more local context and in particular from Montecassino , then at the height of its role as a spiritual and cultural center that spread in southern Rome a typology corresponding to that of the early Christian basilica tradition. The building is built in gray tuff from Campania, an ignimbrite similar to piperno , left exposed to the face. Easily workable, it comes in the variety used in Casertavecchia with a predominantly gray color used, between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries , also in Capua and Salerno
The façade , placed to the west according to tradition, is salient and reflects the interior with three naves ; it is characterized by three portals in white marble of Luni (which contrasts with the gray-ocher tufaceous masonry) with vegetal ornaments that recall ancient iconographies. Zoomorphic sculptures support the architraves and come out from the walls on a shelf. The tympanum is characterized by a series of blind arches intertwined to form ogives resting on six marble columns. A cornice with hanging arches runs on all the facades. The southern façade is decorated with marble lozenges, while the opposite side is characterized by elliptic shapes.
The interior of the church has a commissa cross plan in which the central nave , covered with trusses , is bordered by 18 bare columns , almost all of cipollino marble, surmounted by round arches. The capitals , all different from each other (mostly Corinthian and in different state of conservation) obviously come from ancient Roman buildings of the Imperial age (perhaps a nearby temple of Jupiter Tifatino), apart from three capitals of the period medieval. They are surmounted by a kind of pulvinusof simple parallelepiped form with a function to compensate for the different height of the columns, but in any case a Paleochristian and Byzantine cultural legacy .
The dome , hidden by an octagonal lantern, also dates back to the intervention desired by the Bishop Stabile ( 1207 - 1216 ) and presents outside Sicilian influences that unite it to the contemporary cathedral of Salerno . There are similarities with churches of Ravello of the late twelfth century ( San Giovanni del Toro and Santa Maria a Gradillo ) even if the dome of Caserta exceeds by impressiveness those more or less coeve of the Amalfi coast .

Places to see in ( Benevento - Italy )
Places to see in ( Benevento - Italy )
Benevento is a beautiful city set in a verdant environment and surrounded by the Campanian Apennines, between the rivers Sabato and Calore. According to some sources, the city was founded by the Greek Diomedes after the destruction of Troy. The first documented sources date from the fifth century BC, the period of the Samnite wars. The Samnite populations resisted for a long time against the Roman incursions, nonetheless they finally surrendered in 268 BC when the Romans founded their colonies.
However, the Romans recognized the magnitude of the inhabitants of that Maleventum that, renamed Beneventum was also gloriously represented onto a number of important Roman monuments as the Arch of Trajan and the Bridge Leproso. During the Middle Ages, Benevento was first conquered by the Goths and then by the Byzantines. In 571 it was the turn of the Lombards who, led by Zottone, conquered the city once again.
The Lombard domination lasted for about five centuries, and in 1077 the city came under papal rule. The 1266 was the year of the battle between Manfred and Charles of Anjou which undertakes to return Benevento to the Church. In 1688 a violent earthquake destroyed half city, that was gradually brought back to the ancient splendour at the behest of Pope Benedict XIII. During the 16th century the city passed under the rule of Frederick IV of Bourbon, and later included into the Neapolitan Republic. In 1806, the city's ruled by Napoleon, but in 1860 it was finally annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
A curiosity: Benevento is also known as the city of the witches since when the Lombards arrived in town and introduced some customs, such as dancing around walnut trees, which frightened the Christians of Benevento. Benevento's patron is St Bartholomew, which is celebrated on August 24. Benevento is a town rich in artistic and historical attractions. In the old town center you can visit the splendid Cathedral, built around the twelfth century, and unfortunately bombed in 1943. The façade is open by blind arches and balcony above, where there are Roman fragments, Lombard graves and various sculptures. Remarkable is the bell tower that dates back to 1279, while the interior comes with five aisles.
Do not miss a visit to the ruins of the Roman Theatre, commissioned by the Emperor Hadrian, now still well preserved and used for various theatrical performances. L 'Arc of Trajan was erected to celebrate the extension of the Via Appia from Benevento to Brindisi. On the side facing the city are recounted scenes of good governance and works of peace. On the external front, there depictions of military scenes about the imperial policies in the provinces.
Do not miss the Church of St Sofia, once ancient Benedictine abbey founded by the Lombards, which has a solid structure and a 12th-century portal. Rocca dei Rettori's worth a visit: erected in 1321 at the behest of Pope Giovanni XXII. It's divided into three large floors that house the Museo del Sannio. To complete the visit of Benevento Leproso recommend a walk to the bridges Leproso and Valentino located just outside the city. Also do not miss the Villa dei Papi, mansions built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries and the baroque Church of San Bartolomeo.
