San Francisco Travel Tips: 11 Things to Know Before You Go
Things YOU need to know before YOU go to San Francisco in California. San Francisco is the 4th most populated city in California and has a population of 800,000 people. San Francisco is known for year round fog, the golden gate bridge, cable cars, Victorian Houses, sweeping bay views, and of course Alcatraz. One of America's most unique & distinctive cities.
2 - Weather
I refer to San Francisco as the foggy city.
Mark Twain’s famous quote: “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”
The weather varies by hour, and by neighborhood. It could be 70 degrees and Sunny in one spot, and 50 degrees with pea-soup fog in the other.
September and October are the warmest and sunniest months.
Wear layers you can easily remove.
3 - Food:
Clam Chowder & Sourdough Bread
Seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf
Little Italy
Chinatown
Koi Palace by San Francisco Airport
Ferry Building for lot’s of local food.
Cowgirl creamery has good cheese.
Ghirardelli for chocolate and ice cream
4 - Hotels:
SF can be quite expensive
Weekends are often cheaper
I like Union Square. Most central, you can take the BART here. Cable car, street cars.
2nd choice: Embarcadero
I dont like fishermans wharf.. too touristy.
Definitely stay within the city.. dont be crossing the bay.
5 - Getting In:
3 Major Airports: SFO, OAK, SJC
SFO is 15 miles South of the city.
A strip of TARMAC surrounded by water.
The main airport, the major airlines all fly here.
Prone to weather delays (FOG)
Taxi or uber will cost about $60 and take between 25-60mins.
BART: $10 to Union Square and 35 mins. BART makes 4 stops in Downtown SF.
Oakland is 25 miles from SF, across the bay. Less foggy, so less delays. Good if you are visiting Napa. Lots of Southwest flights.
San Jose
60 miles south of SF. Good if you are visiting Santa Cruz, Monterey, or Carmel. You can do a one way rental car and return to SFO.
6 - Getting Around:
Cable Car: San Francisco classic from 1873. It’s amazing they still run these.
Best place to ride… on the outside! Want to stop… just yell out you want to stop!
7 - POPOS:
What’s a Popo? Privately owned public open spaces.
They come in the form of urban gardens, plazas, but the best ones are on rooftops.
Neither obvious nor clearly marked, POPOS are all over downtown San Francisco—and everyone is welcome
8 - Chinatown:
SF has the largest Chinatown outside of Asia. It's also the oldest in North America. It is around one mile long by one and a half miles wide. Covers 24 square blocks. More than 100,000 people live in Chinatown. It's the most densely populated neighborhood in the city and in fact the most densely population neighborhood in the US west of Manhattan.
It really is a city within the city. Chinatown has it's own customs, languages, places of worship, social clubs, and identity.
Lots of great Dim sum joints, bakeries, tea shops, and this is where the American fortune cookie was invented.
More visitors come to Chinatown than the Golden Gate Bridge.
Portsmouth Square bustles with activity such as T'ai Chi and old men playing Chinese chess.
9 - Fisherman’s Wharf:
Probably the most touristy part of San Francisco, particularly because it’s next to the Golden Gate Bridge.
Alcatraz Tours leave from here. Book in advance. More about that in a bit.
Visit Boudin, Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory, and In-N-Out Burger.
They invested the Irish Coffee in the 1950’s at Buena Vista Cafe here.
And of course the Sea Lions
My favorite place is the arcade
10 - Alcatraz:
Probably the most famous prison in the US.
home to some of America’s most notorious criminals, Operated here from 1934 to 1963.
11 - Day Trips
Napa
Santa Cruz
Monterey / Carmel
3 nights in SF, 2 nights in Napa, 2 nights in Monterey/Santa Cruz, and maybe add a night or 2 in Silicon Valley if you are a tech nerd.

Transport in San Francisco - California
Public transport:
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency - Muni (tel: 311 within San Francisco or operates trolley cars, buses, streetcars, cable cars and a light rail system. Find information online or at the Bay Area Travel Info line.
Buses, trolleys and streetcars cover the same routes and command the same fare. Pole signs and curb and street markings designate stops. Tickets are available upon boarding and exact change is required. Cable cars run on three routes. Passengers can buy tickets on board (with exact change) or from kiosks at the cable car turnarounds.
Muni light rail covers Market Street, the Mission District and Noe Valley (J line), the Ingleside district (K line), the Sunset District (L, M, and N lines), and the Castro, Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf (F line). Transfers are good for bus and rail connections within 90 minutes.
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system operates the subway, which runs along Market Street. It operates from early morning until 2400. Tickets are available from machines located in the stations.
Muni Passports are available for one day, three days or seven days and allow unlimited travel on Muni services.
Ferries depart from the Ferry Building, The Embarcadero, located at the east end of Market Street. Regular crossings go to and from Bay communities.
Taxis:
Taxis are plentiful. Tipping is customary and drivers expect about 15%. Yellow Cab Cooperative Inc (tel: (415) 282 3737) is a reputable provider.
Driving:
Parking is at a premium and car parks are expensive. Regulations can be confusing and are aggressively enforced. It is important to note that, when parking on a hill, the driver must curb the wheels to prevent a runaway and ensure that the handbrake is on. Wheels should be turned out facing uphill.
Car hire:
The best reason for hiring a car is to explore the magnificent coastal road, Highway 1. Most car hire companies offer deals that include insurance and unlimited mileage but drivers should be at least 21 years of age. A valid driving licence is required, while a second form of identification and booking ahead is advised.

Places to see in ( San Francisco - USA ) The Castro
Places to see in ( San Francisco - USA ) The Castro
The Castro District, in Eureka Valley, is synonymous with gay culture. Revelers often spill onto the sidewalks at numerous bars, like Twin Peaks Tavern, whose floor-to-ceiling windows were revolutionary when it opened in 1972. The lavish Castro Theatre and the GLBT Historic Museum are also found here, as are homey restaurants and adult shops. On Market Street, 19th-century F-line streetcars head to Fisherman’s Wharf.
The Castro District, commonly referenced as The Castro, is a neighborhood in Eureka Valley in San Francisco. The Castro was one of the first gay neighborhoods in the United States. Having transformed from a working-class neighborhood through the 1960s and 1970s, the Castro remains one of the most prominent symbols of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activism and events in the world.
San Francisco's gay village is mostly concentrated in the business district that is located on Castro Street from Market Street to 19th Street. It extends down Market Street toward Church Street and on both sides of the Castro neighborhood from Church Street to Eureka Street. Although the greater gay community was, and is, concentrated in the Castro, many gay people live in the surrounding residential areas bordered by Corona Heights, the Mission District, Noe Valley, Twin Peaks, and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods. Some consider it to include Duboce Triangle and Dolores Heights, which both have a strong LGBT presence.
Castro Street, which originates a few blocks north at the intersection of Divisadero and Waller Streets, runs south through Noe Valley, crossing the 24th Street business district and ending as a continuous street a few blocks farther south as it moves toward the Glen Park neighborhood. It reappears in several discontinuous sections before ultimately terminating at Chenery Street, in the heart of Glen Park.
Castro Street was named for José Castro (1808–1860), a Californian leader of Mexican opposition to U.S. rule in California in the 19th century, and alcalde of Alta California from 1835 to 1836.[5] The neighborhood known as the Castro, in the district of Eureka Valley, was created in 1887 when the Market Street Railway Company built a line linking Eureka Valley to downtown.
One of the more notable features of the neighborhood is Castro Theatre, a movie palace built in 1922 and one of San Francisco's premier movie houses. 18th and Castro is a major intersection in the Castro, where many historic events, marches, protests have taken and continue to take place.
A major cultural destination in the neighborhood is the GLBT History Museum, which opened for previews on Dec. 10, 2010, at 4127 18th St. The first full-scale, stand-alone museum of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history in the United States (and only the second in the world after the Schwules Museum in Berlin), The GLBT History Museum is a project of the GLBT Historical Society.

San Francisco Nightlife in USA
San Francisco has some of the best bars & cozy rooftop patios in the United States. I recorded lots of footage throughout the weekend at many venues to bring you the best spots.
Photos and more tips:
The music at most venues was quite good, no complaints what-so-ever.
My friends took me to the most seclusive bars in San Francisco and I am happy to share this list with you.
San Francisco's nightlife isn't as massive as Miami or Toronto, I would describe it as more laid back and underground. The city offers many great clubs but for this particular article I will feature only the bars.
Monarch may be the best bar in the city, it has a club in the basement and a few bars on ground level. The music was funky and chill.
The absolute must-see bar is The View rooftop bar on top of the Marriott Marquis on Mission St. located on the 39th floor
The best part of my trip to San Francisco was meeting up with friends who I last saw in Tokyo back in 2007 where we used to roll out to jams in the Roppongi district, those memories will last a lifetime!
