Salmon River Scenic Byway | Visit Idaho
The northern end of the Salmon River Scenic Byway begins on the Montana border at the Lost Trail Pass (elevation 6,995 feet). Lewis and Clark came this way in 1805, and the spectacular view from this vantage point has changed little since that famous exploration of the West two centuries ago. The route follows the Salmon River -- also called the River of No Return -- through the Salmon-Challis National Forest through the historic city of Salmon. The river and its forks serve as important natural pathways into Idaho's rugged back country. The deer, elk, and moose that often graze along the hills and meadows that line this road provide a glimpse of the wild country beyond.

8,727' Swanholm Peak is situated in the eastern Boise Mountains, only six miles from the SNRA Wilderness Boundary. It's been on my list for the past year since I first glimpsed it from Goat Mountain (see the third photo in the link...recognizable Steel Mountain is in back just right of center, with Swanholm just in front/below Steel). After a little poking around, I discovered there's a maintained trail to a fire lookout on the summit. It was also in a new area I had never been to. I didn't need much more convincing this trip would be well worth it, just needed the stars/weather/dates to align. At only two days shy of one year later, that alignment came.
My hope was this would be a twin summit day, combining both 8,727' Swanholm and 8,930' West Warrior peaks by traversing their beautifully exposed connecting ridge. But ultimately we chose to spend a couple hours doing absolutely nothing at Swanholm except soaking up the wonderful sun/weather/views, instead of pushing the extra four miles roundtrip to West Warrior. I'm still not sure if I regret that decision, as I love marking peaks off my list and I'm guessing the view from West Warrior towards the western Sawtooth front, with West Warrior lakes below, would not disappoint.
The weather couldn't have been better. Really, it was totally ideal summit weather. Not a breath of wind at nearly 9k', and the sun was warm/strong. The views were impressively vast, with ~4k' drops in almost every direction. Perhaps the best view I've had in the Boise mountains, able to see almost the entire range from one summit.
The actual hike is pretty tame. The first half involved mindlessly placing one foot in front of the other on a nicely maintained trail. The second half was a much more exciting off trail ridge walk thru shallow snow with some nice views. Highlight of the hike was when we ran across two moose sunbathing on the ridge at nearly 8k'! They hung out a hundred yards or so away from us while we thoroughly enjoyed gawking at them. It really was quite a sight, and definitely added enjoyment to the overall adventure.

In addition to the powerful conservation goal, American Rivers along with NRS, YETI, and O.A.R.S., have launched the 5,000 Miles of Wild campaign: embarking on a mission to tell the stories of America’s rivers and the people who love them—from whitewater boaters and avid anglers, to families and urban dwellers who enjoy backyard escapes.
“By collecting personal stories from people across America, we will show how rivers connect all of us and send one clear and unified message to our elected leaders: our rivers are worth saving,” Amy said. “Our aim is to recruit, engage and empower a lasting army of people speaking up to protect our rivers and clean water.”
