Lake in the north of Jura in France
Jura is one of eight departments of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region and is surrounded by the French departments of Doubs, Haute-Saône, Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire, and Ain, as well as the Swiss canton of Vaud on the east.
The Jura mountains are wooded and rolling, not craggy and rocky like the Alps.
Many lakes can be found throughout the Jura - the largest natural lake being Lac de Chalain, measuring 3 km long and 1 km wide. Lac de Vouglans was formed after the building of a hydro-electric dam. It is one of the largest man-made lakes in France.

Entry Title: Offenbourg, March
Entry:
Excited to sample a bit of the German holiday spirit, I voluntarily placed myself on a bus with twenty raging twelve and thirteen year olds for a day trip to Offenbourg's Marché de Noël (Christmas Market.) James and Nicole, two other American assistants living in Lons le Saunier, a town located about forty minutes from Champagnole, invited me to come along on the day trip to Lons' sister-city in Germany. Still pitch black outside, the five hour trek to Offenbourg required an early, six am departure. The large, double-decker bus was filled by the time we had arrived, except for two seats in the back up top. However, Nicole and I soon realized that our luck at finding two seats together was not exactly to our advantage. As if on cue, as the bus departed, the rebel forces of teenagers began their tribal chanting. Though hollering and screaming is usually soothing, Nicole and I found it difficult to take the morning nap we had planned. We soon realized our lingering glares and muffled expressions of annoyance (in English and in French) were not of any importance to the hooligans onboard our bus. The puberty-stricken voices of the boys surrounding us had prevailed, and we surrendered and resorted to chatting until our arrival in Offenbourg. The Marché de Noël was comprised of two main streets lined with kiosks that looked as though they had been drowned in a pot of Christmas décor. Each stand, colored in bright, glossy reds, greens, and golds, paired with elaborate images of Santa Claus (or der Weihnachtsmann in German), seemed to joyously carol the Christmas spirit. Much like Christmas fairs in the states, the majority of vendors were selling crafted ornaments, wreaths, and table decorations. Still, there were many stands solely dedicated to the peddling of assorted German cookies, breads, sauces, and of course Glühwein and bretzel; no Marché de Noël would be deemed suitable without the serving of these two traditional items. As soon as winter takes its first frosty breath, the Alsace region of France and Germany, as well as in the Swiss Alps, start serving mulled wine. This hot drink, known by the German name Glühwein and the French name vin chaud, is red wine combined with brandy, water, strawberries, pineapple, sugar, honey, and cinnamon; it is a traditional drink served during winter, especially around Christmas, to warm up market shoppers. As popular as glühwein is, I actually preferred the non-alcoholic kinderpunch that is served to the children. Haha I'd compare the rich taste of kinderpunch to a cranberry, apple-cider...mmm! Glühwein is almost always served with bretzel. Originating in western Europe, bretzel is firm, moist bread enclosed by a crunchy dark brown crust sprinkled liberally with salt. This uberpretzel is so renowned, it has its own legend recounting its creation. As the story goes...Once upon a time, in Alsace, there was a baker who had been imprisoned for having insulted the local Lord's wife. The Lord challenged the baker: 'If you can cook me a cake through which I can see the sun three times, you will be freed.' The baker took some dough, bent it in a knot shape and cooked it. The Lord, recognizing the smart spirit of the baker, freed him. After shopping for a few hours we found an absolutely charming restaurant for lunch. In addition to its burgundy walls and shiny brass, the interior was, of course, decorated for Christmas, with sparkling garland, miniature Christmas trees, and snow-frosted scenes painted on mirrors throughout the restaurant. One of the nicer places to enjoy an authentic German meal in Offenbourg, it seemed that many of the other 58,000 Marché de Noël tourists had also discovered our restaurant. Determined to dine at this particular gaststätte (restaurant), we soon found ourselves dining family-style with four other guests. Much to our delight, our new lunch companions were French! Not only did this add to the quality of discourse throughout our meal, but it was fate as they spoke German, and we could not have ...
