Bagur Navile Water Tunnel | Longest water tunnel in India | Hassan Tourism | Karnataka Tourism
Bagur Navile Water Tunnel is the Longest water tunnel in India part of Hassan Tourism, Channarayapatna Tourism, Karnataka Tourism. Bagur Navile Tunnel is the longest water tunnel in India, an engineering marvel, constructed between 1979 and 1990 is located between Bagur ( ಬಾಗುರ್ ) and Navile village of Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan district, Karnataka. The water tunnel created between Bagur and Navile in Chennarayapattana taluk of Hassan district is the second longest water tunnel in Asia The idea of constructing a tunnel was mooted during the tenure of the late D. Devaraj Urs. However, the irrigation expert Balekundri opposed it. Even Devaraj Urs is said to have warned during the foundation stone laying ceremony that constructing the tunnel below 200 ft may lead to depletion of the groundwater table. What was feared came true after the implementation of the project. Work on the tunnel went on for 15 years, and by 1991, the adverse effects became apparent. The 9.76 km-long and 5.4 metre-wide tunnel runs between Bagur and Navile from A.G. Ramachandra Rao Canal of the Hemavathy project.Water is supplied from Hemavathy basin to Shimshabasin using this tunnel.
Length of the tunnel is 9.7 km, 75 to 200feet Deep under the ground. Water is supplied from Hemavathy basin to Shimshabasin using this tunnel. With an intention to supply 25 TMC water to Tumkur from the Hemavati dam, a channel was created in 1979 from Gorur to Bagur in Chennarayapattana taluk covering a distance of 50 km. However, a 10 km stretch in the midway was elevated and therefore a plan was chalked out to create a tunnel from Bagur to Navile to facilitate the supply of water. This tunnel has been dug to a depth of 150 ft. under the ground, even as the depth is about 300 ft. at some locations. The tunnel runs for about 10 km from Bagur and opens near Navile village. As a result of creating this tunnel, seepage of groundwater into the tunnel, borewells in the area had gone dry but several other drought-stricken villages got water. All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) organised the farmers of many affected villages and launched a prolonged massive agitation in 1996 against the state. This came to be popularly known as the BAGUR-NAVILE AGITATION in the country, considered by some eminent social scientists as one of the most important peasant movements in post-independent India. Farmers in over 40 villages of Bagur hobli in Channarayapatna taluk were facing problems as lift irrigation schemes proposed to help the affected farmers were not completed owing to non-availability of funds. The Department took up two compensatory lift-irrigation schemes to irrigate the Bagur-Navile cluster of villages. But they were completed at an extraordinary delay of almost two decades.
