5 secrets of Siena you won't find on travel guides | TIPS TO TRAVEL IN ITALY

Hi, I am Ero! Siena is a beautiful italian city in the heart of tuscany, famous for its medieval cityscape, delicious cuisine and principally, the Palio, a horse race held twice a year, every year, in the main square, Piazza del Campo, an ancient tradition that is famous all over Italy and also abroad. Siena has lots of very beautiful places to visit, including the Duomo and Piazza del Campo, which of course you will end up seeing if you follow a common tourist guide as you are visiting the city. However, beside the touristy stuff and places, Siena hides a number of small but very interesting secrets, mostly notorious only to the people that live there. I have lived in Siena for a few years, and in my time here I have learned a lot about lots of these secrets and I made this video (and another one, check out ) to share with you these secrets. I am sure that they will be very useful when you visit Siena, or that they will convince you to come here and visit. Enjoy and let me know if you have any other questions. 00:38 THE WOLF STATUES: Siena is full of wolf statues (for example, in piazza del campo, in piazza della postierla, infront of palazzo tolomei, in the cortile del podesta, the two ones infront of the duomo and the one inside of the duomo, and others), however the wolf is notoriously the symbol of Rome, so why are they here? the legend says that one of the two founders of Rome, Remo, before being killed by his brother Romolo, had two children: Senio and Ascanio. After the death of their father, Senio and Ascanio ran away from Rome riding a black and a white horse that were provided by the gods Apollo and Diana, bringing the wolf that fed their father. They reached a hill and founded there Siena, that took the name of the older brother Senio. So, the wolf and a black and white flag became symbols of Siena. The roman and senese wolves can be distinguished by the fact that the roman one looks left, and the senese one looks forward.
01:45 THE HEADS OF PALAZZO SPANNOCHI: They are a row of heads at the top of a palace in Piazza Salimbeni, Palazzo Spannocchi. These heads were placed here in 1473, when the palace was built by the rich merchant Ambrogio Spannocchi, and represent faces of roman emperors and other illustrious characters, including Dante Alighieri
02:26 THE DAMA IGNUDA: It's a statue of a naked white woman looking outside from the window, in Via dei Rossi 123. This statue is called La Dama Ignuda and was made by the sculptor Pier Luigi Olla in 1995. The florentine commander Giangiacomo medici in 1555 led the Medici army in the conquest of Siena, and this statue represents a young woman that he took from Siena as a prize for himself (the girls is MARTINA VALENTI )
03:07 PIA DE' TOLOMEI'S STONE TAG: This one is definitely my favourite secret! It's a stone tag on the side of Palazzo Tolomei (in Piazza Tolomei), showing a verse of Dante's Divine comedy that says Ricorditi di me, che son la Pia; Siena mi fé, disfecemi Maremma that means remember me, I am Pia; Siena made me, Maremma destroyed me. Dante here is talking about Pia de' Tolomei's story (watch the video to discover it).
04:26 THE CONTRADA FOUNTAINS: They are 17 fountains sparse all over Siena, which represent the symbols of the Contradas. For more details watch my video about the contrada fountains:

Chiusi is located in south east Tuscany bordering Umbria. it is an ancient land that dates back to the Etruscan times in 600 BC. In the town's archaeology museum there are artifacts from the Etruscan age. The area is known for its Tuscan tombs. It became a Roman province around 400 BC. One Thousand years later it became a battle ground between Siena and Florence. Today it is a flourishing Tuscan town. Close to the towns of Montepulciano, Pienza, and about 60 miles from Siena. Acireale is a coastal city and comune in the north-east of the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily, southern Italy, at the foot of Mount Etna, on the coast facing the Ionian Sea. It is home to numerous churches, including the Neo-Gothic St. Peter's Basilica, St. Sebastian's Basilica in the Sicilian Baroque style, and the 17th century Acireale Cathedral, and a seminary, for the training of priests. Acireale is also noted for its art and paintings: the oldest academy in Sicily, the Accademia dei Dafnici e degli Zelanti, is located here.

In the 16th century, Emperor Charles V freed the city from feudal ties, creating it as a Crown commune. In the late 16th century, the town had between 6,000 and 7,000 inhabitants. The most ancient document mentioning the Carnival of Acireale dates to 1594. The town expanded its role as a trade center (it was granted the right to hold a Free Market or Fiera Franca) and received numerous new edifices.

Acireale was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, which substantially halted its economic growth. During the Expedition of the Thousand (1861), which freed Sicily from the Kingdom of Naples, Acireale was the first town to rebel against the Bourbons. In 1941, it was bombed by the Allies, resulting in many civilian casualties.

The church of San Biagio in Acireale contains some of the relics of the Venerable Gabriele Allegra, who had entered the Franciscan seminary in 1918. Villa Belvedere and Parco delle Terme, two large public parks and La Timpa, a beautiful natural reserve overlooking the Ionian Sea, offer great nature sights. Piazza Duomo, with its St. Peter's Basilica, is in the main square of the city. There are many beautiful historic Baroque buildings in town, such as Palazzo Pennisi and Palazzo Modò, which date from the 17th century, and Palazzo Musmeci dating from the 18th century. The commercial city center is primarily located in the streets including and adjacent to Corso Umberto and Corso Italia, which are the city's principal thoroughfares. The Fortezza del Tocco, a 16th-century fort, has been converted to a nature reserve.

Poggibonsi is a town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, central Italy. It is located on the Elsa River and is the main centre of the Valdelsa Valley. The area around Poggibonsi was already settled in the Neolithic age, although the first traces of civilisation dates from Etruscan-Roman age, attested by a series of necropolises and by placenames such as Talciona or Marturi (from the Etruscan name of Mars).

The importance of the area dates from the 10th century, thanks to its position across the Via Francigena, the main road from Rome to France. At that time, the development of Borgo di Marte (later Marturi, Borgo Vecchio and then Poggibonsi) was started, a settlement whose origins are debated. Around 1010, Borgo di Camaldo appeared. In 1155 or 1156, the inhabitants of these and other nearby towns were moved by Guido Guerra, of the Guidi Counts, to a hill where a new settlement, Poggiobonizio, was established. In the 12th century, the Cathars had a major theological school in Poggibonsi.

The Palazzo Pretorio (late 13th century), with the annexed Torre del Podestà was the seat of the local government until the construction of the Palazzo Comunale in the 19th century. The lower floor, with the loggia, is travertine, while the upper section is brick and travertine. Since 1997, it has housed a palaeontological museum. The Church of San Lorenzo, built by the Augustinian order in Gothic-Romanesque style. In 1495, it was the seat of the meeting between Charles VIII of France and Girolamo Savonarola.

Santuario del Romituzzo: 15th-century oratory-sanctuary with campanile and portico housing a venerated image of the Madonna della Neve (Madonna of the Snows). Basilica of San Luccese Large Gothic church, built around 1252 over a pre-existing church of San Camaldo, traces of which can be seen in the façade and left wall.

The Fonte delle Fate (Fairies' Spring) is one of the few remains of the destroyed Poggiobonizio, from the early 13th century. It was discovered in 1803. Castello della Magione, once home of the Knights Templars, and then given to the Knights Hospitallers after the Templars were abolished in 1312, is on the Via Francigena.

In the frazione of Staggia Senese is a notable castle (Rocca), probably dating from Lombard times, which belonged to the Florentine family of the Franzesi from the 13th century. Castello di Strozzavolpe (Castle of the Fox-Strangler) is an ancient fortress of the Guidi family. According to legend, it was connected to Poggibonizio by a tunnel. San Martino a Luco romanesque Pieve church.

The Church of Sant'Andrea a Palapiano, one of the most notable Romanesque edifices in the area. Santa Maria a Talciona: 12th-13th century church with bas-relief (1234) in portal portraying the Adoration of the Magi. San Lorenzo in Pian de' Campi: church houses a 15th-century fresco by Pier Francesco Fiorentino.
