Mt. Takao is located about 50 minutes away from Shinjuku by train, close enough for a day trip of leisurely hiking on the mountain. The Japanese have regarded it as a holy mountain since the Edo period.
The area is famous for its tororo soba, which is made with buckwheat noodles and grated yam.

金閣寺に清水寺…軒先に世界遺産ずらり
民家の軒先に世界文化遺産のミニチュアがずらり――。前橋市の住宅街に、思わず目をひく家がある。家を囲むように１７点が並び、いずれも高さや幅が１メートル前後。手作り感満載で、ご近所さんにファンもいる。どんな思いで次々と作ったのか。家主を訪ねてみた。
群馬県庁に近い前橋市の住宅街。原進さんは夕方、街頭での警備員の仕事を終えて帰宅すると、まず軒先に向かう。ボタンを押すと、手作りした清水寺や白川郷が光を帯び、水が流れて水車が回り出した。
原さんが展示し始めたのは２００４年。当時６０歳。この家で暮らしていた妻の両親が亡くなり、同県玉村町から引っ越して第二の人生を歩もうとした時だった。
